Transformers has a fandom rivaled only by Star Wars and Star Trek man. They're rabid dogs for anything with an autobot symbol on it.
After watching the Transformers Movie with my son I decided to take a look and see if there are any good Transformers Generation 1 TPBs/graphic novels in print.
Can anyone recommend anything? I don't have much interest in anything other than Generation 1.

There was a mini a couple of years back, which I picked up at a local bookshop... no idea what it's called but it had a great story and excellent art by Pat Lee, who can only draw Transformers.
Found it. It's called "Prime Directive". It's by Dreamwave, and led into an ongoing series, which was cancelled. I really enjoyed it, and it's pretty much a standalone read, so try and track it down.
I think I found it: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Transformers_%28IDW_Publishing%29
The series is marketed as various limited series for each story,[2] in published order as The Transformers: Infiltration, Stormbringer, Escalation, and the upcoming Megatron: Origin, Devastation and Revelation. The series also has a sister title of ongoing one-shots entitled The Transformers: Spotlight which began in September 2006, each focusing on a particular character and impacting the storyline of the main title.

Nope, that's IDW.
Here's the one I read: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers:_Generation_One_%28Dreamwave%29#Prime _Directive_.28Volume_1.29

That's OK - it didn't really matter what publisher. I like the idea of rebooting the line Ultimate-style, since as I understand it there are a ton of problems with the old comics.
Plus I like what I've seen of the art in the IDW books.

Most of the problems stem from the fact that in the UK they put out more comics than they did the US and Transformers fans feel a need to unify this instead of just having US and UK continuities.
I have the first 15 or so issues of the original series, I'd be glad to hook your son up.

That would be awesome - thanks. He'd love it. He really liked the movie, although I don't think he was old enough to appreciate a bunch of robots dancing around to Weird Al's "Dare TO Be Stupid".
I really wanted to pick up the Generation 1 DVDs but it looks like they are out of print and kind of expensive. I tried looking for downloads of the DVD rips but all I could find were AVIs.

I've got one G1 disc you can have if you want. It's only got about six episodes on it.

i love transformers comics I would recommend
Transformers: The War within (It's a prequel and also not exactly g1 more like Ultimate Transformers as the description says but it is so worth it.)
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transformers:_The_War_Within
Transformers: All Fall Down for the classic feel
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Transformers_%28Marvel_comic%29
It's issues 69-74 of this and is nice
Transformers: Time Wars - This is uk comic and the best the uk transformers ever reached. it was very impressive. It featured the end of the Galvatron saga
http://www.sci-fi-online.50megs.com/reviews/comic/03-07-24_TransformersTimeWars.htm
Also look up the ones leading up to that. It's fantastic
Transformers: Dark Designs - generation 2 but it's right near the start of G2 and is still a great story
http://www.sci-fi-online.50megs.com/reviews/comic/02-09-27_TransfDesign.htm
You said you watched the film so Transformers: The Legacy of Unicron
http://www.sci-fi-online.50megs.com/reviews/comic/03-01-24_TransLegacy.htm
It relates directly to the events of the movie.
Transformers: City of Fear
Another from Marvel uk (IMO marvel uk ones when they were good were they best)
http://www.sci-fi-online.50megs.com/reviews/comic/03-10-24_TransformersCity.htm
Transformers: Primal Scream
This is usa comic collected in tpb featuring Simon Furman who did the uk ones and his work on transformers is great
http://www.amazon.com/Transformers-Primal-Scream-Simon-Furman/dp/184023458X/ref=sr_1_5/002-9820460-9824064?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1181252144&sr=1-5
they were just some of the ones that stand out on my collection so I recommend them to you and anyone.

Cool - I'll take it. Why only the one disc?

Because they released them as season sets and also as individual discs. So, since I was so poor at the time, I bought Season 1-Volume 3.
I bought 3 first because I saw the episodes on 1 and 2 a million times, 3 I saw less.
Anyways, I never bought any more of them and I'm pretty sure they'll release the season sets again someday, so I've no need for it.

I can't access the link at the beginning of the thread. can anyone get me a better link to the article? also could a mod merge the transformers licence thread that I created with this one?
oh and some other thoughts: Why is it that with every company that picks up the transformers license that they have to reboot the G1 continuity every time? dosen't that get annoying that when ever a long time transformers comic fan picks up the new comics by the new license holder that they have to read ANOTHER reboot of the G1 continuity? why can't the license just stay with one publisher instead of it being rebooted every time?

The IDW books are really good. It's a reboot and is generally inspired by G1 but not confined by it. The only new TF book out there that sucks is the crossover with New Avengers.
To be honest, don't bother picking up any of the DW-made stuff as that jerk Pat Lee just killed off his company with zero warning (and lots of unpaid staff) and cut off the comics without proper conclusions. Although some people are saying that IDW is working it out to get all the rights for the unprinted stuff, I don't see why would anyone care right now for a continuity that hasn't been updated for 3 years.
