Seriously-----Disney is still awesome!!!
I was trapped in Biloxi the last 2 weeks and about 95% of the gulfcoast is still in ruins. So there was nothing to do but stay in the room and watch DVDs (one can only take so much MTV's Yo Momma, Parental Control and Sweet 16) and play videogames.
I decided to watch a bunch of Disney DVDs that I packed. I will put Aladdin, The Lion King, Tarzan, Atlantis, etc... up against any one of these weak talking animal CGI flicks like Shrek or Madagascar any day!!!!
Anyways----I was watching a bunch of Disney films for lack of TV and I just remembered why Disney dominated so much. It's because they rock!!!
Rocketeer came on cable last night and of course I had to watch. Then this morning Disney's Three Musketeers (live action....not Mickey and the Gang) was on and I had to watch that while getting ready. 2 things became abundantly clear:
Keifer Sutherland is awesome in anything he does.................................for you young whipper-snappers who haven't seen Lost Boys yet---stop being such tools and go see it. I'll put Lost Boys up against Saw, Hostel or any other new-fangled "horror" flick you kids wanna put out there!!!!
Aside from Home on the Range.........Disney can really do no wrong.
And if you don't agree.............SHUT UP!!! I didn't ask you anyways. :P

People don't like the emperor's new groove? That movie was funny as hell!
Lama Face! I can't believe that people did not get that movie. Disney is good, but they have been sleeping trying to get in this stupid CGI cartoon crap. They should stick with the cell art. Herc was good too.

And Emporers new grove was funny, I just dont like David Spade. Disney hasn't made that many great movies in a while though. Here's to the future.

Well, they've literally shut down their 2-D animation studios, and have gone to 3-D. (Direct to DVD movies will still be 2-D though.) First up was Chicken Little, which made 136 million bucks, which is a lot, but for Disney, is technically a failure (not my words but I agree). I saw it in Digital 3-D and it became my #1 Worst film of '05. Then, last weekend came the Wild, which was "thought up 10 years ago", but nobody listened deeming it a Madagascar rip-off, and it debuted as the 3rd worst opening for a CG toon ever (#1 Doogal, #2 Valiant).

I saw Chicken Little and I liked it. Now keep in mind that Disney's 3D studio projects are nothing compared to Pixar's. But I liked Chicken Little more than Shrek* or any other of those films.
I prefer to have "smart" kid films grace my screen rather than "childish" adult comedies packaged as a kid movie.
*Poster's Note: I hate Shrek. Seriously. It wasn't even funny.

Yeah, I'm not a big Shrek fan either. I'd give the first one a 3.5/5, and the second one a 2/5. Pixar is far superior.
It's gonna get even worse because Justin Timberlake joins the cast in the third one and the actual title is "Shrek the Third".
The saddest part? I'm probably gonna end up seeing it.
Even though Valiant was really great.
Yeah, I heard about all the bad reviews, and then the film actually turned out to be really good. (4/5 for me.) The problem is, it didn't cater to a specific group of people except animation buffs, because the WWII setting is a bit confusing for kids, but the jokes turn a lot of parents off. Also, no offense, but a lot of little kids (like my siblings) have a hard time w/ British accents.
But that has no effect whatsoever on the HP franchise.

I would only give Shrek 1 outta 5 stars. Mainly for John Lithgow's performance as the evil King/Prince whatever guy. Especially the Gingerbread Man torture scene. That was the only REAL funny part of the movie.
I saw Shrek 2 because the wife loves it. The Cat was the only entertaining aspect. But one talking cat does not a great movie make.

I own all of them except for some of the older ones like Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Sword in the Stone, etc...
Little Mermaid comes out on DVD in Oct. I'm not hyped for it...but I'll still get it for the collection.
I own KH1.....it took me 7 months in Iraq to beat it. It was so exhausting that I'm hesitant to pick up KH2 based on how big its supposed to be. I saw the stradegy guide......I'm not sure if I can dedicate that much of my life to one game. But I did love KH1......so........

But my favourite 2-D Disney cartoons ever are The Lion King, The Iron Giant, and all three Aladdin movies.
Oh, and Beauty and the Beast. We happened to watch this in drama class yesterday, and it was the first time I've seen it in at least 6 years. It really is a great film.
2. I used to listen to The Lost Boys soundtrack on my way to work atealst once a week. The movie friggin rocks. Best film Joel Schumacher ever did.
Nope. That spot is reserved for Falling Down, with Michael Douglas and Rober Duvall. If you haven't heard of it, shame on you. Rent it tonight.

I'm surprised to see so many Shrek-haters here. I think it's one of the best movies ever made. I agree the sequel wasn't as good as the first though, except for Puss-in-Boots, who was the highlight of the film.

Steve Jobs has as much of a say on the Disney Board as Walt Disney did back when he was alive.
That being said, I love Disney Musicals...
Here are my top ten Animated Disney Movies ever:
1. Beauty and the Beast - Overall best movie. Best music. Best storyline, and overall, best message to kids (true love over vanity... Love in first sight ain't always a good thing)
2. The Lion King - Scar is the best animated movie villain ever. Period.
3. Hercules - I love the soundtrack to this so damn much... and the cast??? James Woods as Hades! Danny DeVito as a Satyr! Rip Torn as Zeus! Paul Shaffer (Dave Letterman's Pianist) as Hermes!!! What's not to like!?
4. The Little Mermaid - Ursula is up there with scar, but Sebastian is the reason to love this movie... As well as Buddy Hackett as Scuttle the Seagull... hehehe.
5. Aladdin - Robin William's Genie rocks my socks off. Also the soundtrack is the ****.
6. Mulan - Great story... Great characters... Hell, I even enjoyed Mushu the Dragon. I'm just not a huge fan of how few songs there were. There was the potential for a lot more... But overall, this movie is awesome
7. The Emperor's New Groove - Funniest Disney film ever.
8. Lilo and Stitch - I love this movie... Its just adorable, and makes me want to have a pet renegade space monster... Plus, Lilo's sister's boyfriend was pretty hot, in that animated watercolor hawaiian sort of way.
9. Robin Hood - Hellz yeah. Best Theme Song ever!!!
10. The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh - Tigger is the ****. Anyone who says otherwise can be shot in the head by the Nazis.

My Top 10...
10. Dumbo - If nothing....for the blatant racist stereotype of black people by those damn "n*gga crows"
9. Pinnochio - Again...the Italian/Gyspsy stereotype of The Great Stromboli is great
8. Emperor's New Groove - This movie is awesome with David Spade....but it's nothing without Warburton's Krunk. "Squeeker squeekin?"
7. Aladdin - Genie is still awesome....but overall just one of the best films they've ever done.
6. Sword in the Stone - The legend of King Arthur fascinates me. So it was kinda cool to see Disney do King Arthur "The Smallville Years".
5. Lilo and Stitch - Beautiful. And a great representation of Hawaaii.........except without the hate towards us "mainlanders".
4. Lion King - A classic. Even the Broadway play was great!
3. Robin Hood ooodeelolly ooodelolly aaaaaa!!!
2. Hercules - Greek mythology reinterpretations are my crack.....I love 'em.
1. Tarzan - Aside from the generic plot---this was a great film. Tarzan has to be one of my favorite literary characters. I even watched the WB's short-lived live action drama series. Either way....this is the best film for me to watch on a Saturday afternoon with nothing to do and in the mood for light TV viewing. Plus they're doing a new Broadway play on Disney's Tarzan so I'm so there....

I grew up on a few Disney movies, most notably Robin Hood and Sword in the Stone, neither of which I've seen in probably a decade, but I will nonetheless love forever.
I had an Aladdin phase, where I couldn't get enough of that movie. I even bought the saoundtrack.
And Lilo and Stitch was great, the best recent animated film I've seen this side of Miyazaki. I even teared up a little during it.
But my favorite Disney movie has got to be Sleeping Beauty. The animation is Disney at their absolute peak, the story is exciting and full of adventure (it's about the Prince, not the titular Beauty), and has probably the best climactic battle Disney's ever done.
I know some people are turned off by the name and presumed subject matter, but seriously, this is great.

I want to weigh in on my top 10:
10: Sleeping Beauty: wonderful animation, awesome dragon, dashing hero
9: The Little Mermaid: good movie. It has a spot in my heart because the mermaid's cousin wa sin my elementary school class, and she got a bunch of the animators and voice actors to come to my school and show us behind-the-scene unfinished clips, and talk about the process of making the film. Coolest thing that I learned in Elementary School.
8: Alice in Wonderland: Trippy and scary! The sheer insanity of this movie astounds me.
7: Lilo and Stitch: I suspect, if I ever have a daughter, she will behave much like Lilo. Definitely one of the top 3 most random movies Disney has put out.
6: Dumbo: I haven't seen it in a long time, but I watched it twice daily as a child.
5: Aladdin: Genie was awesome and Jafar is a great bad guy. I had my first kiss watching this movie. Chicks dig "A Whole New World."
4: Robin Hood: In my favorite genre with awesome music. Favorite music in a Disney film.
3: The Emperor's New Groove: Any movie with Kronk in it would have been a favorite of mind. Add in the random Llama humor, a touchingly genuine voice performance from John Goodman, CREEPy Izma, and the line "Um...I just got turned into a cow. Can I go home?" and I was rolling in the isles!
2: The Sword in the Stone: I am a sucker for adaptations of British novels that perfectly capture the spirit of the book while maintaining the integrity of the film medium. This mocie recognized the limitations of film, and did an awesome rendition of the first 3rd of The Once and Future King.
1: The Lion King: Other than my contention against Disney claiming this as an "original story," I love it. In fact, I love it because it is NOT an original story. I love it because it is a faithful and beautifully rendered adaptation of my favorite Shakespearean tragedy, Hamlet. Also, Scar and the Hyenas are VERY cool. More villains need battle-cry songs. "Our teeth and Ambitions are bared! Be PREPARED!"
Hurcules, Tarzan, and Hunchback are the only Disney animated features I have seen that left me underwhelmed. That said, I havn't seen lots of recent ones, such as Home on the Range or Brother Bear.

Basis of Alice is Alice Liddel, the young daughter of the Dean of Christ Church in Oxford, whom Carroll took with her sisters on summer boat trips and told them stories. On one of these trips he outlined what was to become Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

The old live action version of Alice (the popularaly known Peter Sellers version) starts out with a bit of Lewis Carroll and the girls in a boat with him telling the story.
But my favorite version was the 80's one by Irwin Allen, with songs by Steve Allen. My mom taped it when I was a kid and I watched it a LOT. The Jabberwocky was actually quite frightening.
Disney version is okay, but not one of the best Disney movies.
The 90's Hallmark version with Martin Short is just awful. Loud and obnoxious, I can't even finish it.

KH2 is awesome, Vic. Buy it. It's also not as intimidating as KH1 (I found it to be easier) even though it IS larger.
As for current Disney. . .I haven't seen the Wild yet, but Chicken Little was decent. But, you can tell quality has gone down since Home on the Range (What a crappy movie to end 2D animation on!) Also, the straight-to-DVD sequels kind of annoy me. The only sequels I enjoyed were the Aladdin ones and Rescuers Down Under (Which is the only Disney sequel, aside from Fantasia 2000, to be considered a Disney Masterpiece). The rest of them you can tell are just to cash in on the name.
Well, at least there's Pixar still which has yet to disappoint (Haven't seen Cars yet either).

Disney movies are so full of innuendo and secret sex jokes that it's a little bit disturbing. That Disney movies were full of innuendo is completely unsurprising since Uncle Walt was a rather disturbed individual himself.
Which isn't to say that I fall in the camp of "Disney movies are evil because of Walt's latent sexual desires and anti-Semitism". I actually believe that his influence wouldn't have been possible WITHOUT being burdened with deep psychological issues, nor would have the films he had a direct hand in had any kind of appeal if they were free from them... they'd just be squeaky clean pabulum with no themes to make them interesting.
But on a less academic note:

Remember when ABC would have "Wonderful World of Disney" on Sunday nights? They always had some silly hour long random Disney show or cartoon? They'd come back from commercials and they'd ahve Tinkerbell fly across the screen and tap the Disney logo?
I remember this show in particular. Fluppy Dogs (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disney%27s_Fluppy_Dogs)
I don't know what made me think of that last night.

So Pirates of the Caribbean 3 opens in a few days and to be honest---I dislike the films. I find some parts to be amusing....but for the most part I am bored outta my mind when watching them.
I started watching part 2 last night at like 9pm and almost 20 minutes into the film I damn near fell asleep. That's how unentertained I am with them. Pirates put me to sleep.
But anyways......in regards to the topic of this thread---I gotta say that I still love Disney's opening company shots. You know how all PIXAR films open with that hoping lamp post...and all of Paramount films open with the stars circling around the mountain top? Well remember Disney had that blue screen and a little white spark would fall from the top of the screen and form their Disney Castle logo to the theme of "Wish Upon A Star" like this...

All I'm gonna say is that I am in love with the new animation one they use now. I just really noticed it at the beginning of Pirates2.

I went to DisneyWorld when I was 11 and it sucked royally. Everything was about 'good, evil...and music!' and none of the rides were any good, except for the awesome Aerosmith ride.
I can't find any enjoyment in Disney hand-drawn animation movies anymore, because no matter how cool one of their movies is, they'll always have a kid-friendly comedy character that dumbs it down by about four notches (see Tarzan, Aladdin, etc.)

Most of the times, they exist to 'patronize' the parents by giving them some token humourus 'adult' references to historical/social/cultural things that would go over the children's heads since it's just GOT to be a family affair.
I think the 'kid-friendly' aspect you're referring to is how they always have to provide enough ADD-esque stimulation with funny faces and 'crazy' antics so that children have something to focus on while the character makes with the adult humor.
So, in two weeks, I'm going to EPCOT. My friend started a tradition last year that every year on his birthday, we go to EPCOT and go "Drinking Around the World".
So, you start at Mexico and stop to buy a drink at every country until the end. Last year, people made the mistake of doing this then riding Mission: Space (Which, for those who don't know, is basically a gravity simulator). It was quite funny to watch.

I watched some of Return of Jafar lately, but I had to stop. Basically, Aladdin lies about even more stuff and Iago weasels his way out of getting punished for the stuff he did in the first film and then Jafar comes back. I remember less of the plot than I do of being really, really angry that I listened to two songs that had Iago sing extensively (what were they thinking?!) waiting for the Jafar song, which wound up sucking. Maybe I'll watch the King of Thieves.

I haven't seen Bolt yet, but I hear it was pretty entertaining. Maybe I'll pick it up later today.
But, Disney will continue to do CG films, just alternating with classic 2D films. The Princess and the Frog is next as the first 2D film since Home on the Range, then Rapunzel will be the next CG film, then King of the Elves will be a 2D film.
Rapunzel looks interesting, though. Even though its CG, it's being done so that it looks like an oil painting. I'm pretty excited about it, personally.

While those 'movies' were indeed 2D film, they are not canon nor considered Disney Classics. Any movie that is not a Disney Classic but is still animated are movies that second string Disney animators do to improve their skill. So yes, the last Disney (Classic) movie that was 2D was Home on the Range.

Ah the lion king sequels most will say 2 sucks (I liked it though) but 3 (1 1/2 in usa) is worth checking out even if it's just a rental as it is parodying and self mocking the first lion king. While the first lion king is my favorite disney film I still laugh at and enjoy 3.
Pretty much what Mattimeo said.
While, yes, there were 2D "straight-to-DVD" films and even theatrical releases like Return to Neverland, they aren't part of the Disney Canon. And by Canon, I don't mean they aren't canon in their respective storylines. I mean there is a Disney Canon that includes 48 films, from Snow White to Bolt. These were done by the Walt Disney Animation studio.
The sequels/prequels you are talking about were done by ToonDisney, based out of Australia. They aren't considered "Disney Classics". The two sequels that ARE considered Classics, as Mattimeo alluded to, are The Rescuers Down Under (Which was a superior film to its predecessor) and Fantastia 2000.
I've only watched a few of the sequels outside the canon. The Little Mermaid II, the two Aladdin sequels and the two Lion King sequels. Out of those, only King of Thieves and Lion King 1 1/2 (Which is basically Disney's version of Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead) were entertaining. The others were garbage, in my opinion. Although I've actually heard the third Cindarella and Return to Neverland are decent. I'm just leery about those straight-to-DVD releases, especially since even the the canocical Disney theatical films have been mediocre at best these last 10 years.
The exception being Bolt. I was highly entertained by it. It was the first Disney film that gave me hope that the company was finally moving in the right direction again. Not including the always phenomenal Pixar, of course.
Not an entirely bad compromise, actually.
I'd much rather Disney Animation focus on 2D while Pixar focus on 3D, but you're right, it is a fair compromise. And, to be quite honest, Rapunzel looks gorgeous, despite the fact that it's 3D animation. The art style is fantastic.

Now I just have to buy 3 more movies in the next two years at full price and make sure I check no and send the card back every time they send me a new promotional offer.
movies I bought:
A Bugs Life
Monsters Inc.
Finding Nemo
Cars
Remember the Titans
The Sword In the Stone
Oliver and Company
SWEET!
Those are being added to my collection which already includes
Robin Hood
The Jungle Book
The Rescuers Down Under
The Little Mermaid
Aladdin
Hercules
Mulan
The Emperor's New Groove
The Incredibles
Up
If I don't get the Toy Story trilogy for Christmas like I asked, I'll probably just buy them in January and then cancel the club subscription.
I need to pick up the Pixar movies I don't have, including BOLT and THE PRINCESS AND THE FROG because I can't stop listening to the Gipsy Kings' cover of You've Got a Friend in Me.
It's my own fault for seeing TOY STORY 3 for a second time.

Wow. Slightly OT, but I was just thinking the other day - I wonder if there are any old record clubs like Columbia House and BMG still running?
I used to have 2-3 record club accounts running at a time and re-enrolled in them every time I fulfilled the obligations. It was the best way to get a lot of CD cheap. BMG was better because usually you only had to buy 1 CD at full price, but Columbia House had a better selection.
