Bruce Campbell is
Professor Ulysses Cliffhanger
This is Indiana’s new archaeological nemesis. Like Belloq, Indiana once again has a rival in his field – a smarter guy who can speak more languages and kick Indy’s *** at his own game. That, is Professor Ulysses Cliffhanger, author of the best-selling pulp adventure novels, “Cliffhanger Capers!” Where Belloq was Indy’s Nazi mirror, Ulysses is his professional one – where Belloq was working for evil forces but had respect for the profession, Cliffhanger works for the money and fame. He only cares about himself. And unlike Belloq, Ulysses’ real talent is his incredible skill with weapons. There would be a big fist fight between the two towards the end of the film. To set up how tough Ulysses is, after Diaspora beats up Indy, around the 70 minute mark, Ulysses would kick her ***. That way, when he came to face Indy, Indy would really be the underdog. Also, Cliffhanger just gets under Indy's skin. He's the reason people think of him as a grave robber, and Cliffhanger can never remember Indy's name. I'd love a scene where the villains ask Cliffhanger to identify Indy and he says, "I think his name was... Montana... Smith." But the thing that
really gets Indy? Ulysses
keeps everything he finds. His mansion is a treasure trove. And all those wonderful things
belong in a museum! And he’s extremely famous. Every time someone meets Indiana Jones and they find out he’s an archaeologist, they go, “You mean like Professor Ulysses Cliffhanger? He’s amazing!” and Indy replies, “That’s not even his real name!” I like the idea that instead of “It belongs in a museum” he keeps pointing out how fake Ulysses is (“He’s not even a Professor!”) I like that Indy’s actually jealous of him. As for Ulysses death – he falls off a cliff. Plus – they put a statue up in his honour.
The comical take on the scene where, for the first time, Diaspora and Indy can understand each other; they kiss and Diaspora moans, "Oh... Ulysses..."
