Re: Ultimate Central Member Introduction Thread (3.0)

Real name: Jelani-Ahmad

Age: 26

From: Originally from Waldorf MD......currently in the southern tip of Illinois...just 10 minutes away from St.Louis.

Meaning Behind My Member Name: Obviously mine is based off Dr.Doom.......but the reasoning behind it isn't what you would expect.

See.....

Me and friend of mine were tryig to come up with a stage name for him (he happens to be a DJ). Both he and I LOVE Wu-Tang Clan........and you should too!!!

Anyways....I was talking about how cool it was that all the members in the Wu have like 6 different aliases. Most notably is Ghostface Killah (aka Cher Chez La Ghost aka Pretty Tony aka Tony Stark aka Iron Man). I always thought it was cool that Ghostface went by Tony Stark and mentioned to my friend that he should go by a Marvel character's real name and not their codename a'la Scott Summers instead of Cyclops or Peter Parker as opposed to Spiderman.

Unfortunately not all characters have cool normal names. I mean sure Mr.Fantastic aka Reed Richards is kinda cool.....but it doesn't have that "pop". I then suggested that maybe he should take up the moniker of my favorite villain....Dr.Doom. To me it was brilliant!!!! But he didn't like comics books and thought it was stupid. I shot him in the stomach and watched him bleed to death for 3 days. Anyways.....I still thought it was a cool idea and then started posting forums under the alias of Victor Von Doom.

It wasn't until an office gathering a few year back that I knew this nickname was meant to be. We were having what is called "Amnesty Meeting" (where you air your work-related grievances without consequence)...and one of the exercises was to describe your co-workers work ethic/supervisor style/attitude in 1 word. My troop called me "ironfisted".....just like the staute that sat on my desk...

Favorite Titles: Changes constantly....you can see them here.

Favorite Characters: Depends---Good Guys is Capt America...bad guys is Dr.Doom........in-betweener would be Punisher.

Where I Buy My Comics: Fantasy Comics in Belleville IL and all my trades and DVDs come from the way most excellent UC Store!

When/Why I Started Collecting Comics: I used to read comics when I was younger. The only one I read was X-Men. But then I fell outta following comics for over a decade. But who didn't during the horrible 90s? It wasn't until 2004 that I was bored one weekend that I decided to go to the book shop. While I was there I decided to check out Vol.1 HC of Ultimate Spiderman. From then on I was hooked. I decided to check out the rest of the Ultimate line. It was only a matter of time that I decided to add some 616 to the list and then onto DC and others.

Just this last year I was going thru a serious fight with depression and divorce. Comics were the only thing that really kept me sane. If not for them and this site who knows what I would've done. Not only that---comics gave me back my identity. For so long I was trying to be what everyone wanted me to be. I shunned a lot of my interests because they were frowned upon or looked at as weird. But when my world came crashing down, so to speak, I started reading comics heavily again. Not only that I started drawing again......something that I haven't done since I graduated HS. So now I'm back....and I'm ME again.

God I hope comics don't hit a low point like the 90s again otherwise it's time to break out the razors.

My First Comic: X-Men--Mutant Genesis #1

Favorite/Least Favorite Writer: Right now, without a doubt my fav is Brubaker. Bendis is my least favorite.......mainly because I know he can do better, but he chooses not to.

Favorite/Least Favorite Artist: My fav would have to be Immonen followed by Michael Turner. My least fav would have to Bagley and Raney............oh and I can't forget the horrible Liefeld.

Favorite TV Show/Movie:
TV--
24, Veronica Mars, The Unit, 30 Rock, Friday Night Lights, Hero, anything on Adult Swim, Best Week Ever

Movie--
Seven Samurai, Last Samurai, Gladiator, Punisher, Matrix Trilogy, Bullitt and anything by Tarantino.

Favorite Actor/Actress: Don't really have any......

Favorite Food/Drink: Italian......real Italian. Any Coke product.

Favorite Music Acts: Too eclectic to list......but rap is dead to me.

Favorite Book(s): HAHA....you think I can read.

Favorite Cartoon/Anime: Justice League Unlimited and the entire Bruce Timm Collection

Favorite Game(s): God of War, Mark of Kri, 24, Prince of Persia Trilogy, Onimusha Trilogy, Killzone, Ico, Shadows of the Colossus, Hulk-Ultimate Destruction

Miscellaneous/More About Me: At a young age I was shown "The Seven Samurai" .......and that was it for me. I knew from that moment on I way destined to follow the way of the warrior. I studied boxing, kenpo-jujitsu and yes....close quarter combat. I'm in the military and while I haven't seen the horrors Frank Castle has.....I've seen many a dead bodies.....a few of them were mine. Trust me.....you're never the same after that. But in all seriousness---it doesn't bother me now. I'm very sarcastic and funny....but its really me overcompensating for the fact that I have the mental instability where at the drop of a hat I could do pretty fair amount of violence to bad men and have no regrets. It's ok....you can either be disgusted by me and never look at me again or you could try and save face by chuckling uncomfortably. Neither bothers me and I'm used to it.

I am also an incredible ***hole. Seriously.

Re: Ultimate Central Member Introduction Thread (3.0)

Real name: Ben

Age: 25

From: Lawrenceville, GA

Meaning behind my member name: Nickname from college combined with role-playing character name

My pull list: Ultimates 2, Ultimate Vision. Mostly I wait for the trades, and read titles in-store.

Favorite titles: Ultimate X-men, Ultimate Fantastic Four, Ultimates, The Tick

Favorite characters: Ultimate Captain America, AoA Colossus, The Tick

Where I buy my comics: Galactic Quest in Buford, trades at Borders or Books-a-Million.

When/why I started collecting comics: 5th grade: watching the Fox X-men cartoon inspired me to buy X-men comics. The continuity overwhelmed me, so I stopped. I bought lots 2099 books in middle school, due to the continuity-lite nature of that series. I also bought lots of Age of Apocalypse books because everything rather started over for X-men. After AoA and 2099 ended, I got out of comics and into other hobbies like table-top RPGs and CCGs. I briefly bought comics a few years ago when the Marvel 1602 series came out. Last year, I picked up a super-hero RPG rules set, Mutants and Masterminds, and decided to run a game for my friends in an established comic world. I first considered an AoA game, but I didn't remember enough about it to do a great job, and cretaing new characters and stories was rather difficult. I did some research and discovered the Ultimate imprint, and was floored with how new and easily accessible it was in trade format. I found this site in an attempt to do research on what trades to buy. I now own them all. I ended up running an Ultimate X-Force game (As a government-sponsered Mutant-Ops branch of SHIELD) that drew primarily on material from Ultimate X-men and the Ultimates. Maybe one day I'll wirte up what happened as a fan-fic.

My first comic: Uncanny X-men 280

Favorite/least favorite writer: I have grown to love Kirkman's work. I am not sure who my least favorite is...I havn't been blown away with any Warren Ellis I have read, but maybe I havn't been reading the right Ellis.

Favorite/least favorite artist: I love Andy Kubert. I HATE Greg Land

Favorite TV show/movie: TV: Heroes, Veronica Mars, Gilmore Girls, Beauty and the Geek, Lost, Survivor, Smallville, Supernatural, Desperate Housewives, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel, The West Wing, The Shield. Movies: HA! TOO MANY! In high school I was known as one of "Those Star Wars dorks." I was very much defined by my love for Star Wars. Episode 1 made that start to ebb, and episode 2 brought my geekdom to a grinding halt. Episode 3 brought back some of the floon, but it will never be the same.

Favorite actor/actress: Eh...I tend not to hero worship. Maybe Johnny Depp?

Favorite food/drink: I like Dr. Pepper. And Marinara Sauce. Not together.

Favorite music acts: Ben Folds, Cake, Winston Audio

Favorite book(s): American Gods, Insomnia, Song of Ice and Fire series, Frankenstein and a cast of thousands more.

Favorite cartoon/anime: The Tick. I don't watch anime if I can help it.

Favorite game(s): Video: Marvel: Ultimate Alliance or Dynasty Warriors 5; Board: The Settelers of Cattan; Other: Dungeons and Dragons; Sports: Football

Miscellaneous/More about me: I am married, have a dog, own a home, and teach high school. I once seriously considered acting or music as a profession, though now I spend very little time with either. I like to write and have some pretty good ideas in my head and on my hard drive, I am just working up the will-power and time to craft them into something worth reading.

Re: Ultimate Central Member Introduction Thread (3.0)

Real name:Jim

Age:21

From:Chicago, IL

Meaning behind my member name: I am the bastard son of the man who played Mayor McCheese in the old McDonaldland commercials and a french polynesian prostitute. I grew up on the southside of Chicago. After my father lost his job due to legal issues (Mayor McCheese bore too close a resemblance to H.R. Puffinstuff) he would walk around the house in his old torn up costume, had our last name legally changed to McCheese, and beat me if I didn't refer to him as Mr. Mayor. So the name kind of stuck with me.

My pull list:
Cable&Deadpool
Runaways
X-men
Ant-Man
Iron Fist
Ultimate X-Men
Ultimate Fantastic Four
Ultimates
Ultimate Spider-Man (unfortunately)
Nextwave (just added)
Daredevil - Haven't added it to my pull yet, but I bought The Devil, Inside and Out and it was great. Went back and bought Guardian Devil and Parts of a Hole which I also enjoyed. So I'm going to start working my way through the old trades as I try to get caught up with the current story line.

Favorite titles:The above minus USM

Favorite characters: Deadpool,Chase, and the Ultimates(that's right all of 'em)

Where I buy my comics:Everywhere and nowhere

My pull list: Only JUSTICE at the moment.

Favourite music acts: New Order - Bizarre Love Triangle(Every Time I See You Falling), The Killers - All These Things That I've Done, and When You Were Young.

Favourite book(s): Elliot S! Maggin's novelization of Kingdom Come is the greatest thing I've ever read. After that, the Harry Potter books, Holes, Jurassic Park, and Jumper are all up there. Oh, and 1984. That book changed my view of reality, and it'll do the same for you.

Favourite cartoon/anime: The Simpsons, B:TAS, S:TAS, JL/JLU, Loony Toons.

Favourite game(s): My Tops are Halo 2, The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King, TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, Spider-Man 2, Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, and last but far from least, Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.

Re: Ultimate Central Member Introduction Thread (3.0)

Real name: Seldes Katne. At least when I’m on the ‘Net.

Age: There are two things one should never ask about: a gentleman’s past, and a lady’s age.

From: Binghamton, NY area. I’m still there, as a matter of fact.

Meaning behind my member name: “Seldes Katne” is the name of a character from a Barbara Hambly novel called Dog Wizard, which features many unique and interesting wizards, but has, alas, no dogs. (In Hambly’s fictional world, a “dog wizard” is someone who knows simple magic but is not formally trained.) Seldes Katne is the librarian at the Citadel of Wizards in the story, which means she and I share the same occupation. I wanted a name that would not only reflect my occupation, but would also be unusual enough that no one else would have it or a variation of it. I also liked the fact that it seemed like a real name, so people didn’t have to assign me an abbreviation or an acronym.

My pull list: Rex Libris. Yes, that's all; I read everything else in trades, which give me a large portion of story in one volume with no commercial interruptions and which can be donated to the Young Adult section of the library when I’m finished with them. I buy Rex in singles because I think the concept is highly amusing, and I can share them with some of my colleagues when I'm done reading them.

Favorite titles: All of the Ultimate line. (Yes, even Ultimate Marvel Team-Ups and Ultimate Adventures.) ElfQuest. Usagi Yojimbo. Leave it to Chance.[/I] Darkhorse’s Star Wars comics. Ruse (which unfortunately has been discontinued). Owly. Bone. Asterix (which I first read in French class in high school many years ago). Herobear and the Kid. Magic: The Hero Discovered. And I'm looking forward to picking up the first trade of Lions, Tigers and Bears.

Favorite characters: From Ultimate Marvel: Thor, Ben Urich, Sam Wilson, Peter Parker, Aunt May (who is the kind of aunt every kid should have), Professor Storm, and a honorable mention to Jack Danner (from Ultimate Adventures: One Tin Soldier. Yes, he’s kind of a goof, but a man who likes owls can’t be all bad). Beast, from both Ultimate and regular Marvel. Dr. Strange, from regular Marvel. Leetah, Skywise, Huntress Skyfire, Lord Voll, Strongbow, Moonshade, Savah, and Nightfall from ElfQuest.

Where I buy my comics: Fat Cat Books in Johnson City, NY. Also at various Borders Bookstores, WaldenBooks, Barnes and Nobles, and any miscellaneous shops I run across when I’m traveling.

When/why I started collecting comics: After reading comics as a girl, I moved on to other forms of literature for several years. I rediscovered comics back in the early 1980s when I found trades of ElfQuest in a WaldenBooks. (Wolves. Elves. Full color. Great art, well-developed characters, and a plot, too. What’s not to love?) For several years, that was the only comic line that interested me.

Now I’m responsible for ordering both Children’s and Young Adult materials for a medium-sized public library, so I have a professional excuse to read these things. Comics (known as “graphic novels” in the library world) are a growing portion of many libraries’ collection because of their appeal to different ages, particularly to boys, who have always been a challenge in terms of suitable reading materials. I like many comics just because I enjoy the story, characters, or art; having a topic of common interest with some of my patrons is a major plus. (Hey, if the librarian reads comics, maybe the old battleaxe isn’t so bad after all.)

My first comic: Probably something fairly tame, like Disney or Archie. Honestly, I can’t remember. It really has been that long. I read all kinds of comics as a kid, courtesy of my dad’s barber, who had a whole table full of ‘em in his shop, bless him.

Favorite/least favorite writer: Least favorite: it’s a toss-up between Franz Kafka and Herman Melville. Oh, wait, did you mean comic book writer? I guess I don’t have one. Favorite: Wendi Pini.

Favorite food/drink: Chocolate. (Which, despite what the medical profession tells you, really does qualify as the fifth food group.)

Favorite music acts: I don’t know about “acts”, but my favorite musicians/groups/composers: David Arkenstone, John Denver, Barry Manilow, Barbara Streisand, Enya, Manheim Steamroller, Brulé (contemporary Native American), Cusco, Clannad, The Chieftains, John Williams. I have a small but thriving collection of classical music composed by all the usual suspects.

Favorite book(s): Ultimate Central doesn’t have enough bandwidth for my favorite books list. Seriously. I spend almost as much time reading as breathing. Go check the What Do You Read? thread for a representative sample.

Favorite game(s): I’m guessing this is either computer games or one of the games here at UC. I’ve been voting on the Ultimization Game, but don’t play myself. I don’t play computer games much.

I do, however, play four different types of solitaire: Klondike, the standard version most people know; Spider Solitaire on the computer; a version called Traveling Men, in which the cards are divided into several piles and moved back and forth; and a version called (get this) “Thor’s Hammer”, which I had to learn just for the humor value.

Miscellaneous/More about me: Because the above wasn’t long-winded enough, apparently…. As my subnic shows, I’m one of the few people on the site who will admit to being female. I don’t think I’m a rabid feminist, but I do feel that any woman who thinks she’s as good as a man is an underachiever. (Sorry, guys, I couldn’t resist.) I’ve never been a Mom of any kind before, so being named Site Mom was an honor and a role that I take very seriously.

People on the site have come to associate me with Ultimate Thor for various reasons, in part because of my choice of avatar and in part because of a rather over-the-top essay I did on the character back before Ultimates 2 delved into his origins. The sad truth is that I really bear no resemblance to him at all. I am neither blond nor bearded, my hair is cut fairly short, and I wear glasses (which recently became bifocals). If I wanted to look Thor in the eye, I would have to stand on a chair. Or maybe even a table.

I’m severely overeducated — a Bachelor’s in Communications, a Master’s in Journalism, and a Master’s in Library and Information Science, with hopes of getting a Master’s in Anthropology at some point. I read a large number of YA and children’s books, and not just because it’s my job, but because I enjoy the writing and the imagination of many writers for young people. I prefer the genres of Science Fiction and Fantasy.

I travel a great deal, taking at least one major trip each year. I have enough hobbies for three people. I sketch, do several types of decorative needlework, make some of my own clothing and costumes, scrapbook, have tried all kinds of crafts, and write both fiction and non-fiction. I’m an amateur student of Native American culture and craftwork, and have been traveling to various Indian reservations over the last 25 years to learn about their local histories and handiwork. In addition to my regular library work, I also run book discussions and writing workshops for one of my local homeschooling groups.

And I’m sure that’s more than anyone ever wanted to know about me.
