So here's the timeline for the X-Men films series.

It includes all the films released so far, as well as the Official Game which occurs between X2 and The Last Stand, and explains Nightcrawler not appearing in The Last Stand.

The Prequel tie-in comics aren't included since they've been negated by events in the subsequent sequels and can't be taken as canon (interestingly the X2 - Wolverine Prequel was written by Brian K. Vaughan).

There are still a few continuity screw-ups even between the films themselves, but its been reported Singer will attempt to rectify these in the upcoming Days of Future Past film (and since that involves time-travel, it'd be the ideal place to do it).

This is a much more simplistic approach than the MCU timeline, merely because I haven't taken the time--yet--to break up the movies by DVD chapter, nor have I gotten around to playing the video game (I plan to though).

Flashback scenes or scenes which occur in the past are contained in parentheses, with the years the bulk of the films occur in outside those parentheses. This allows for a simplistic ordering of the films until I get around to breaking them up by DVD chapters.

Let me know if you think any dates are wrong.

So one of the biggest continuity mistakes of the series is between First Class and Origins - Wolverine. At the end of First Class, Xavier is paralyzed by a bullet fired from Moira McTaggart's gun (aimed at Magneto) and deflected by Magneto, accidentally hitting and paralyzing Xavier. Towards the end of Origins - Wolverine, Scott Summers and the other mutants being held on 3 Mile Island are escaping and directed by Xavier telepathically. When we see Xavier, he's getting off of a helicopter and walking and standing, obviously not paralyzed. This is a continuity screw-up due to the fact Origins - Wolverine came out first, and apparently the First Class writers decided not to take that into account.

However, for the sake of continuity, I prefer to think of the Xavier we see at the end of Origins - Wolverine (the unparalyzed one) as a psychic projection. I tend to think the real Xavier (in his wheelchair) is either on the helicopter itself, or projecting his image from Cerebro at the X-Mansion. As to why he'd choose to project himself as standing/walking as opposed to being confined to a wheelchair? Well, simple. The helicopter had stairs down to ground level from the open door/hatch, so for simplicity's sake I like to think he just chose to project himself with the ability to walk so his projection could walk down those stairs. Kind of weak, maybe, but its all we've got.

Also, there are some continuity issues regarding Cerebro. In First Class, Hank McCoy built Cerebro. In X-Men, Xavier mentions he and Magneto built it. Now, it could be explained as Hank building the original version at the CIA base, and then Xavier built the version we see in the trilogy at the mansion. However, its unlikely Magneto helped him build it given the way First Class ended. I suppose its possible Magneto had a hand or input in designing the new version, which hadn't yet been constructed by the time First Class ended (but likely will be by the time Days of Future Past occurs--we'll see next year if thats addressed).

Also, in First Class, we're introduced to Emma Frost. Origins - Wolverine, we're also introduced to another Emma (though her last name is presumably Fox, not Frost, since she's Kayla's sister) with the ability to turn her skin diamond hard. The Emma in Origins - Wolverine apparently didn't possess telepathic powers like the comic and First Class versions, so its not a huge stretch to presume they're different characters.

A similar occurrence happens between First Class and Origins - Wolverine regarding the Summers clan. We're introduced to Alex Summers (Havok) in First Class, who appears to be in his late teens or early 20's in 1962. In Origins - Wolverine, we're introduced to Scott Summers (Cyclops), who in 1979 appears to be in his mid-teens, meaning he was likely born in the early 1960's (coincidentally around the time First Class is occurring). In the comics, Scott is Alex's older brother. However, it appears in the film universe, either Alex is Scott's MUCH older brother (by around 20 years), or Alex may possibly be Scott's father in the film continuity. Its also possible he's a more distant relative (cousin, uncle, etc).

Anyone know of any other continuity mistakes regarding the films? I'm planning a rewatch soon, but those are the only ones I could remember off the top of my head.

Singer or someone mentioned that Alex isn't Scott's brother, but they never revealed what their exact relation is, even though they said they would.

So a few more continuity glitches between the films:

In X-Men, Xavier mentions to Wolverine that its been almost 15 years since his memory loss, which with Origins - Wolverine's ending (and the cause of his memory loss) firmly set in 1979, this would place the first X-Men film around 1994. Of course given the time placement for the first film of "the not too distant future", and that film being released in 2000, that would indicate it occurring around 2000 or within a few years afterward.

However, since its firmly stated, I'll be placing the original trilogy films between 1994-1995. This also helps solve the problem of the age of some of the characters (Cyclops especially) in the original films.

One other mistake between the films is that Xavier says in the first X-Men that he and Magneto met when he was 17. First Class shows that Xavier and Magneto didn't meet until Xavier was 30 years old (in First Class' credits, the actor who played the younger Xavier from the portion occurring in 1944 is listed as Xavier - 12 years old, placing Xavier's birth year in 1932, or possibly 1931). This would make Xavier about 62 years old with the 1994 placement for the first X-Men.

And in x-men 3 Xavier and magneto are together trying to recruit Jean, even though they don't work together after first class

We don't necessarily know that. In the comics, there have been many times in the early years where Magneto & Xavier helped each other after fighting each other. Then they helped/fought again. It's very possible that the same thing happened here. They've could've helped one another again during the time before X-Men 1 and had another falling out.

Good point. I stopped after X2 in my rewatch (going to watch The Last Stand this weekend) so I'd forgotten about Xavier and Magneto both recruiting Jean.

But as Ice said, it's entirely possible they reconcile temporarily, or at least overcome their differences enough to work together to get Jean under their tutelage.

In fact, the ending of First Class didn't leave them as enemies, though it did establish concretely their opposing views on the human/mutant equation. It's likely also that in Days of Future Past, they may have to work together to avoid that future, though I wouldn't put it past Magneto to try to double cross Xavier and his team as happened at the end of X2 (while they were cooperating against Stryker).

I just finished watching FIRST CLASS again and it lists McAvoy playing Xavier at 24 years old. Someone screwed up on the credits...

So I just re-watched The Last Stand, and I'd completely forgotten Xavier wasn't paralyzed in the "20 Years Earlier" portion when he and Mags go to recruit young Jean Grey.

Man, as much as I liked First Class, it really messed up the continuity.

Also, the Trask in The Last Stand is African-American, so if Caucasion little person Dinklage is also playing a Trask (either an adopted son or the same character recast to the tenth power), the only way to explain it is the adoption angle if he's meant to be the son of the one in TLS, or blindness.

I'm also wondering about the fact that Xavier's conscience is in someone else's body now. How is that going to work out if they're bringing back Patrick Stuart?

Was the full face of the person shown? I don't remember that being so. I'm sure they'll come up with some crazy explanation.

Or maybe he was pulled out of time. Who knows....

I'm also wondering about the fact that Xavier's conscience is in someone else's body now. How is that going to work out if they're bringing back Patrick Stuart?

I may be wrong, but I think the Xavier (as played by Stewart) will only appear in the future portion, thereby opening the likelihood that in that alternate future, Xavier wasn't killed by Jean/Phoenix. Also, since both Cyclops and Jean presumably died in The Last Stand, and Singer recently tweeted an image of Cyclops and Jean from the comics, it could be assumed he may be bringing them back for the alternate future portions of the film. Though since Marsden or Janssen haven't officially been added to the cast yet, I'm assuming those might only be cameos.

Figured I'd drop this here. It's more extensive than the timeline you've got in this thread currently, but not in the same format you've got for the MCU/DCCU timelines, but I figured it'd be helpful anyway.

On a side note, have you ever taken a swing at a timeline of the DCAU? I've been trying to work on one for a while because the majority of the ones I have seen directly contradict the source material.

I had seen that awhile ago but looks like they've added stuff pertaining to The Wolverine film that was just released. Overall I agree with it except for a couple things:

"William Stryker recruits James and Victor to the Team X".

They have that occurring in 1976. That's wrong, it happened in 1973 or earlier, while the Vietnam War was still going on. The last US troops pulled out of Vietnam in 1975 so it definitely happened before that, and there was a 6 year jump in time from when Wolverine left Team X during the Africa mission to obtain Adamantium, to the events we know occurred in 1979 due to the movies conclusion setting up the 3 Mile Island incident. So yeah, Origins - Wolverine occurs from 1845-1944 during the opening credit montage, then the Vietnam portions occur sometime around 1973 or prior (depends how long Wolverine and Sabretoofh were with Team X), but for simplicity's sake I assume it wasn't long. Then everything from finding Wolverine in Canada with Silver Fox on occurs in 1979.

Their placements for the original trilogy and First Class are fine, but they're off by 2 years in terms of placing The Wolverine. According to Singer, Days of Future Past occurs 10 years after X-Men - The Last Stand. Based on the after credits sequence of The Wolverine occurring 2 years after the events in that film, where Wolverine is recruited by Magneto and the resurrected Xavier, that would place it as follows:

X-Men The Last Stand in 1996
The Wolverine in 2004 (with the after credits sequence occurring in 2006)
X-Men Days of Future Past (occurring in 2006 in terms of the present day/future portions, and the past in 1973).

I'll update this one to reflect the new info for The Wolverine and DoFP.

Also, there's currently no information on how much time passes between the recruitment scene in the airport at the end of The Wolverine, and the beginning/future portions of DoFP. We know DoFP occurs 10 years after XTLS, and we know the airport scene occurs two years after TW, but how long after XTLS does TW begin? The 2 year thing would indicate it occurs 8 years after TLS, but it could be that Wolverine has been rejoined with the X-Men for awhile by the time DoFP starts. Of course if we see a recruitment montage of "getting the band back together" of Wolverine, Xavier, and Magneto finding all their former teammates and bringing them onboard for the war, then we know its probably the airport scene occurred very soon before DoFP's beginning. However I wouldn't expect them to focus on that so much since they're dealing with a pretty large cast and likely won't have time to focus on stuff like that. I'd expect the film to jump right into the action and keep going, without a bunch or set up and "high school reunion" stuff.

On a side note, have you ever taken a swing at a timeline of the DCAU? I've been trying to work on one for a while because the majority of the ones I have seen directly contradict the source material.

I've considered it but truthfully that'd be a major undertaking and currently I just don't have the time. I looked into the various DCAU timelines across the web and they're all different. None se to agree on the placements for a large majority of the episodes. Some stuff in concrete, but a lot isn't and is based on presumption of the people who made them. Maybe one day when I can quit my job and timeline for a living. ;)

Multi X-Verses, BOOM!

1st X-Verse: X-Men, X2 comics, X2 game, X2, X3, Origins: Wolverine, The Wolverine, DoFP
2nd X-Verse: First Class, DoFP

1st X-Verse + 2nd X-Verse = 3rd X-Verse: DoFP

At the end of DoFP, there is only more than one X-Verse: the 3rd.

On another note: are there some dates on the tombstone of Xavier or Jean Grey or Cyclops?

Well, the X-Men film tie in comics aren't canon, nor do they fit into the overall canon due to the later movies. I can't remember specifically, but I believe there are characters who are mentioned or appear in some of them that later appeared in X2 or X3 and don't fit. I honestly won't remember the specifics of the comics, but I do remember that they don't fit into the overall canon as of the later movies. The same is probably true of the X-Men Video Game. I played it years ago and remember it had Sentinels in it (which may not fit with DoFP) and I think Silver Samurai was in it (which probably doesn't fit with The Wolverine). I'll probably end up having to remove that. We'll see.

As for dates on the gravestones, no, there aren't any dates. Just a "In Loving Memory" type thing, not sure specifically but know there aren't any dates, as I would've remembered that and applied it towards the timeline.
