Guys, Superman first appeared in 1938. Why does he still wear briefs over his pants? This has always puzzled me about the Man of Steel. He looks absurd, and he needs a contemporary makeover. Well, it wouldn't necessarily even be contemporary, because it's not like it was even fashionable back in the '30s. I mean, what purpose do external panties serve when you're saving the world? I heard he was just going to have pants in one issue of All-Star Superman, just to test what it looks like. People say that it's necessary for Superman's image, but I don't see how it would hurt if he didn't wear ******* external panties.

It breaks up the color a little?

Batman stopped wearing his "underpants" in the 90s and it looked horrible.

Superman's costume is perfect.

Exactly, its a color balance thing, characters dont always look right, mostly keep because its classic. There has been much negativity when companies try to change costumes or try to make them look "extreme" In the end, Supes costume has become a huge part of who he is.

Simple , It shows they are not embarrassed to be seen in public in their undies and so have no fear. It's very psychological you know , Scientists say it was dating back to Roman times were Julius Caesar would go out in public in a toga.

My theory however is it dates back Cavemen days when they would wear just a loin cloth they made from an animal , It showed no fear and yet they had something to hide.

So you see this is clearly the reason for it. It allows the criminals to get scared as they are against a fearless and merciless foe while keeping the rest of us thinking "hmmm what are they hiding".

Crap, I forgot Batman still wears external panties. But he looks perfect in Batman Begins without them.

He gets a wedgie from the regular tights. It covers it up.

Seriously though, he's gotta be wearing 3 god-damn layers of pants. Underpants, pants, and overpants. That's freakin' ridiculous.

Unless he doesn't wear underpants.

And the fact he's a grown man in a cape who's secret identity is hidden by glasses makes sense?

it's just a comic dude , that's how costumes were back then and like people said it's part of who he is , No biggie , case closed.

Superman is maybe the only "classic" superhero who's costume actually makes perfect sense.

His outfit is a relic of his homeworld. It's not meant to be cool-looking or fashionable. It's not of Earthly origins, so it's allowed to be as weird and unlikely as possible. Superman being the first superhero, you can then reason out that all the other heroes who dressed in similarly ridiculous style were just following his lead. Superman's costume actually explains the reasoning behind why superheroes wear strange, colorful outfits.

Perfect explanation.

I disagree. The underpants are pretty stupid.

The Last Son of Krypton from the Death/Return of Superman - THAT costume was perfect.

I just walked outside in my underwear...I lost a tooth and a lot of blood....that **** doesn't scare anyone!

I'd be for a good change but it'll have to look good.

...

Ok, you've sold me on the underwear, Moonmaster. HOWEVER, I now want to see Bizarro wearing pants.

As a true comic fan, I take comic books seriously. Maybe they aren't meant to be taken seriously. After all, the word "comic" is in the title. But I have a deep appreciation for the medium, and take them very seriously.

His costume is a relic of his homeworld, I get that. The "S" symbol and whatever. But that doesn't justify his external panties. I don't know what external panties have to do with his homeworld. I don't know of any other Kryptonians who wear external panties.

I could have sworn it was only the cape and icon that was from his homeworld, not the costume. In fact, I think Ma Kent made the costume. . .

Anyways, I'm not a huge fan of the Superman costume. Ever since I saw it, I've always like this costume more:

I would love that in an out of contiuty series.

I think all the reason have alread been explained, no need for me to repeat them again

It's times like these that I really miss Doc Comic.

Oh, I agree. I wouldn't necessarily want them to change mainstream Superman's look because people are right; it's too iconic. But, that doesn't make it any less ridiculous.
