Ultimates 2 #12 discussion (SPOILERS!)

For those of us who live in another country or a part of the US the stores haven't opened yet, here is a sneak peek of the entire issue, in pencil-only format:

http://www.theartofcomics.com/u19.htm

If you have the willpower to hold off for the issue, I suggest doing so, because there are some things in here that are just astonishing! There are a couple of pages that need dialog to figure out what's going on, but the gist of the issue is very clear.

I'm very happy with the balance of characters in this - I thought Hulk and the rest of the Ultimate U heroes were going to get huge roles, but, as it turns out, everyone gets good moments, and it's pretty well balanced.

Between this and Ultimate Spider-Man #100, this wound up being the best week for comics I've had in a long time.

Easiest way to describe this issue is a HUGE fight issue. And increadibly gory.

The issue starts with Hulk destroying a majority of Crimson Dynamo's robots. The Colonel (Whom they never actually call Red Skull. . .) sick Abomination on him while he and Cap get ready to throw down. Hawkeye jumps in to try and kill the Colonel, but Hurricane gets to him and starts to seriously beat him down. Abomination is really beating down Hulk and mocking him by saying that he stronger, bigger and has retained his genius intellegence and that Hulk is nothing to him.

Hurricane is basically just beating Hawkeye to death when suddenly Quicksilver wakes up and attacks Hurricane. Hurricane mocks Quicksilver for the whole fight, mocking his relationship with Wanda, Magneto and saying she could just pop Hawkeye's head at the speed their going. Quicksilver completely freaks. He mocks Hurrciane, asking what speed she was trained at ("Mach 5? Mach 10? I was hitting those numbers when I still had pimples!") while Hurricane begs for her life. Quicksilver breaks Light Speed and Hurricane just disintigrates. Hawkeye then tells Quicksilver to stop fooling around, as Quicksilver just glances at him.

Cap and the Colonel just keep on fighting, with Cap breaking the Colonel's lightsaber in two. They both grab a piece and continue to duel.

After this we switch back to Fury, Betty and Wanda. Fury just gets up with his assault rifle, gives Betty one and all three start mowing down Liberator troops. Swarm also continues to beat the crap out of Wasp.

Then, Brian Braddock and a few others go up to some Liberator troops, mocking them for not thinking of secret identities and Brian takes off his glasses and rips off his shirt to show his Captain Britian uniform Superman-style (Nice tribute, Millar).

Swtich back to Hulk and Abomination. Hulk starts mocking Abomination's intellegence as he turns the tables and starts kicking the crap out of him while Abomination begs for his life! ("What's the square root of six million, two hundred and elventy! What's the capital of Texas? How many legs has spiders got? Can you tell Hulk the formula for Coca-Cola? Ho ho ho! Not so clever now, EH!?)

Swtich back to Fury, Betty Wanda and Wasp rescuing Bush. The Swarm attacks them then. . .Wasp takes Pym's Giant formula and CRUSHES Swarm!

Crimson Dynamo switches to a suicide mission and just starts wasting civilians. Loki decides to get directly involved now.

Iron Man shows up in a gigantic. . .cannon (Iron Man 6!) and just lasers pretty much everything (While he's completely drunk, of course), including Crimson Dynamo.

Switch to Hulk ripping off Abomination's arm (While Abomination begs, Hulk congragulates Tony on blowing up people. ) Abomination asks how Banner could beat him when he was so much smarter. Hulk proceeds to litterly punch through Abomination's head, telling him he thinks too much.

All the fights continue when Pym decides to switch sides, telling Ultron to attakc the Liberators. Ultron is pretty confused as Pym explains that he was a traitor to the Liberators the whole time, but Ultron agrees to follow Pym anyways. Quicksilver tells Pym that nobody will beileve him, but Pym insists that was the plan from the beginning.

Back to the Colonel and Cap. Cap tells the Colonel to give up, but the Colonel asks why he would do that to just get executed. Cap explains America doesn't do things that way. A bunch of Liberator soldiers tackle Cap and the Colonel pick up his severed lightsaber and prepares to execute Cap by beheading. Hawkeye tries to get Cap his shield, but it's too far, so. . .he gives it to Hulk. Hulk chucks it, and cuts off the Colonel's hands. Cap breaks out of the hold and grabs the saber. The Colonel asks if Cap has something funny or witty to say. . .and Cap jsut stabs him through the heart, saying "No jokes, Abdul."

Cue gigantic splash page of all the Ultimate heroes breaking out and fighting back.

The Ultimates think they've won. . .but Loki flies up, getting ready to just unmake everything. So, Scarlet Witch decides she can stop him. Loki laughs, saying she can only bend probabilites, while he is a god of them. She uses her powers to bend the probability of Thor showing up and Loki practically craps his pants. Cue Thor splash page. The end.

Simply amazing issue. I'm a little upset that they jsut killed a lot of the Liberators (Especially the Colonel), but still, it was amazing. Very curious to see the Thor/Loki fight and see what happens to Pym.

5/5

WOW.       WOW

WOWOWOWOWOW.

WOW.

so I gather a lot of mockery is going on?

Well it seems that all the Liberators bit the dust, except perchance Perun and Loki, and I am sure Loki will take care of them shortly.

Forgot about Perun. . .Yeah, I guess Thor is just going to beat the crap out of both of them next issue.

Did they say anything on the light Thor saw? It could of been Scarlet Witch's power being him there. And did he have his hammer?

Nothing on the light, he just appears for one page.

And yes, he had both his hammer and his belt. :D

They really need to have each Ultimate Universe series to have one issue that shows what happened to those characters on this day. Like an issue of spider-man starts with him swinging around when the liberators attack, he takes a few down but is captured and shows what happens while in captivity and what he does during the fight Ending with him coming home to Aunt May who is freaked. And have the FF and X-men suddenly be attacked in their respective places, how they are taken out and what they do to escape and fight. Cause I saw that one page where they show the heroes fight and I REALLY want to see more of it and what they think and their reactions to Loki. It will also serve the purpose of placing U2 in continuity. I really hope they do it

Bendis said he'll cover the actions in U2.

So I expect Spidey will met up with a Liberator or two soon now.

And I agree, I'd like to see more on how the heroes fell.

Man, I loved this issue!! Real liked the part where Quicksilver just gave it all he had to tack out Hurricane. I Don't want to wait till December for the next issue.

this is the greatest day in comics history!
It will be the most tresured comic in my collection. Unfortunately I can't get my comics untill Friday :x

Does anyone know where I can find the chase varient cover for Ultimates 2 #12?

God, I can't wait to get this issue. It looks so good! And damn!, Ultimate Quicksilver continues to become even more of a badass.

Maybe I'm only one of the few who actually likes the fact that most of the Liberators got 86'd. I consider that a good job of tying up loose ends by Millar and Hitch. The Ultimates has been setting high standards for character development and portrayal since they started it, and sometimes... the bad guys just need to die. The Liberators were not thugs with powers knocking off a bank, they were an international paramilitary group. Had the shoe been on the other foot (and it was for a while) they would've killed all of the Ultimates. It was only fitting that they got it the same way. Forget the high moral ground, especially in this scenario. Plus, this gives Loeb and Mad a clean slate to do things their way, without having to stop and say "wait, we still have Crimson Dynamo running around... what do we do about him?". They can run amok bringing more new villains into the fold.

Sure, I would've loved to have seen Ultimate Red Skull, but I can wait. I may be wrong, but I think I remember one of them mentioning Skull (and Ultron) in an interview at some point. I'm sure the countries behind the Liberators probably still have the formulas and technology available, so a lot of these villains could be back in different forms at some point in time, anyway.

Gotta love the Hulk punching through Abomination's head and just the way the Abomination was cowering in fear before that happened. Gotta love Quicksilver vaporizing Hurricane, too. "That's molecules dancing!"

This was an amazing issue, and there's still more to come with #13. Loki v. Thor, the Ultimates and (hopefully) some other Asgardians... and Thor destroying Perun as a mere afterthought. I just hope they're able to cram all that plus closure on the other lingering issues of Pym's "infiltration" and the fate of the Black Widow.

TWO THUMBS UP!

TWO THUMBS UP!

The only one that was a really big deal to me was the killing of the Colonel. He was a sympathetic character (If a bit extreme) and I would have liked to see him again.

As for Ultron, Pym definetly calls his robots "Ultron", as if they are one mind. My guess is we'll learn about Pym, Ultron and Black Widow after Thor throws down with Loki.

Yeah. This issue was pretty dope. There were some wicked-awesome deaths. It's just a shame we didn't see Perun.

And, while I didn't particularly dig the design for Iron Man-6, Stark vaporizing robots from space while he gets twisted if completely awesome.

Hurricane's death was one of the best comic book villian deaths in history. Thor returning made me squeal.
I cannot wait for #13, or the Ultimates 2 hardcover.

I actually found this issue to not be very impressive. It was good, don't get me wrong, but it seemed too simply wrapped up (then again, I felt the same way about the first series, but that can be explained away due to the length of time between issues...after waiting so long, it just seemed kind of anti-climactic--read all at once it probably flows better). Just didn't compare to the earlier issues of Ultimates 2.

I give it a 3/5.
