Here's something I've been thinking about: I'm absolutely convinced you could do a Planetary or League of Extraordinary Gentlemen-type thing with Japanese anime and manga. As in The All Stars of One Nation/Time Period's Pop Culture in One Superteam. "For finer worlds that are strange, so let's keep it that way for we are the Authority/Planetary so behave, citizens of Earth."

The works of Osamu Tezuka alone would be enough.

First there's Astroboy, who is essentially an android Pinocchio who fights to be recognized for his 'humanity'. While human society generally rejects accepting him as a 'real person', he never lashes out and fights to stop androids who have taken to rejection as an excuse to lash out as humans. (Which is pretty much a lot like how Bendis and Ellis write their villains, for better or worse, ask me why if you want me to explain)

Then there's Black Jack, the mercenary surgeon who acts like he's heartless, but he's really just a rogue who spits in the face things like class and status and social entitlement. He cures the poor for free, but hires himself out for exorbitant fees to the most desperately ill of the wealthy. He refuses to obtain a surgical license, looking at it as a meaningless symbol of social status.

Then there's Kimba the White Lion, who is a sort of backwards Tarzan. Where Tarzan was a human who was raised by the jungle yet tamed his heart in the city, Kimba is a lion was born in captivity and escaped to live among humans and used his observations of human culture to reconcile the animal kingdom's enmity towards humanity.

Rainbow Parakeet is the actor like no other, and a master thief. He can imitate anyone he sees, and has substituted for famous actors in roles they could not perform. But he also robs the wealthy audiences he performs for.

Melmo/Mamaa is the girl who magically transforms into an adult to mother over her younger brothers, but is in conflict between her childlike self and the things she wants as a woman.

There's a hell of a lot more, but other non-Tezuka candidates for such a lineup would include the former assassin with a pacifist streak (Rurouni Kenshin), the populist-minded cuisinartist (Cooking Master Boy), the street-smart professor (Great Teacher Onizuka) and the prehistoric boy of the future (Future Boy Conan). Hell the first three could easily be found spouting Ellis' "For finer worlds" schtick.

I know of Astroboy, Black Jack and Kimba the White Lion, but have never heard the others. That said, this could be interesting if done right.

the prehistoric boy of the future (Future Boy Conan).
I think I remember seeing an anime of that, and wanting to harm myself and others

I would definitely expand beyond the works of Osamu Tezuka...

Lets see:

I see this taking place in a neo-apocalyptic world, after the Destruction of Neo-Tokyo (from Akira), and the the construction of Tokyo-3 (from Neon Genesis Evangelion). I would see Shotaro Kaneda (the protagonist of Akira who declares the rebuilding of Tokyo at the end of the Manga) as a man now in his late thirties, early forties. He is the president of the new Government of Japan, who is working on a new global defense initiative with a younger Gendo Ikari... This project is Project Evangelion, which plans to use the old government's Gundam technology and bring it to the next level.

Lupin III would be a elderly thief, down on his luck, who is called into action by an unknown force, along with the 35 year old sorceress Sakura Kinomoto (Cardcaptors Sakura), the young outlaws Spike Spiegel (Cowboy Bebop) and Gene Starwind (Outlaw Star) and two members of the Galaxy Police force, Mihoshi Kuramitsu and Kiyone Makibi (Tenchi Universe), To find this conscious interdimensional entity known only as Guu (Jungle Wa Itsumo, Hare Nochi Guu) to prevent the Japanese government from developing the Evangelion robots, which could potentially end the world.

Opposing them will be the three top ranking Detectives working for the Japanese Government, Nokoru Imonoyama, Suoh Takamura, and Akira Ijyuin (CLAMP School Detectives), and their top policewoman, Motoko Kusanagi (Ghost in the Shell). Other high ranking government and police officials will come from the various CLAMP School titles. Persocoms (from Chobits) would also be commonplace in the future tokyo.

Over the course of the series it would become clear that President Kaneda, while openly supporting the UN-funded NERV and the Evangelion project, he has used his underworld connections to bring the creature Guu to Japan. He would also use some of his connections to bring out Japan's most notoriously powerful gods, such as the Forest Spirit seen in Princess Mononoke, and the benevolent Totoro of My Neighbor Totoro. One of the Persocom companies would also be employed to revive the long dead robot, Astro Boy.

Along the way to find Guu, the team of detectives would run across an elderly Ranma Saotome, who would know something about the location of Guu (for some reason). I'd also love to see the protagonist of Serial Experiments Lain as a computer expert building the three main computers at NERV.

At some point in the series, Kaneda would, of course, have to ride his iconic motorcycle, probably after becoming a fugitive.

Guu would turn out to be the conscious embodiment of the universe created by Akira, into which Akira and Tetsuo were sucked at the end of the series. The two of these characters would return to this world and help stop the Third Impact, averting the end seen in End of Evangelion, in which Shinji Ikari becomes the new Adam.

I wish I knew more about manga to further this discussion.

Lain, I have seen, and the girl would fit perfectly into the psuedo science that's prevelant in Dr.Strangefate's previous post.

Ourchair's feels more like a LXG than a Planetary comic. Dr.Strangefate's seems more like a combining of the genres to form a new view of the world.

Astro Boy in the future should be a cynical bastard, losing the innocence he once had.

* bows down to DSF *

That's amazing! I'm just floored by how comprehensive that is. Was this something you had previously considered, because it appears so well thought out.

Behold the amazing focusing powers of procrastination.... I came up with it on the fly, but took like 45 minutes.

That is awesome.

My way is definitely more obnoxious and full of love.

ALSO: I still love my idea from this thread.

Maybe i'll polish it up a bit.

I need to fix mine up... Gene Starwind is from too far into the future... But Spike Spiegel could work, but the whole "colonies on other planets" thing would have to be established well... Especially if we establish this as happening before the series started, so it would just be him with Jet Black. And I would need to reconcile the broken earth as it is in Bebop with the still fairly active earth that's around in my story.

It would probably be best just to allude to the future of Cowboy Bebop (and Outlaw Star, for that matter) within the confines of the story. Like they are building the Astral Gates that makes interplanetary travel convenient.

And there should be a villain who has access to a Death Note.

I think mine is going to be a murder mystery.

It will start with Detective Conan from Case Closed, in a JSA type beginning.

And it's going to have characters from the following mangas -

Veritas
Until Death Do Us Part
Shaman King
Sekirei
Rosario + Vampire
AR
High School of the Dead
M
Gantz
Fate/Stay Night
Eyeshield 21
Doubt
Alive-The Fnal Evolution
Death Note
D Gray Man
Case Closed
Katekyō Hitman Reborn!
Yu Yu Hakusho
Hunter X Hunter
History's Strongest Disciple

Yup, got a character list at work.

Johann from MOnster is added too, so Monster needs to be up there.

And I also going to have the Team Medical Dragon people in it.

Background

Seventeen years previously, the world was thrusted into chaos. The Spirits became restless, and unleashed a series of attacks on the humans. First their was a suicide virus, then a zombie infestation, a death god supposedly descended into the world with a book of power, more and more supernatural beings kept appearing, but the world didn't die.

A team of humans, powered in various ways, stood up to the demons, ghost, supernaturals, and fought them back. The world was safe again.

At least we think that was what happened, no one knows for certain.

Seventeen years Later, Present

Ed. Note: All characters, unless otherwise noted, will appear older than they are in the comics. The Seventeen Years before part is would have been when they were in the comics.

It begins with a rooftop chase. Detective Conan, still in his kid appearance due to the virus injected into him long ago, is running for his life, covered in scratches and bruises, is racing towards a building. Behind him, a figure follows.

In this buidling, two people stand. One is Yusuke Urameshi, the spirit detective from Yu Yu Hakusho, and the other one is Sena Kobayakawa from Eyeshield 21. They are reminiscing about what happened 17 years ago, when they and five others saved the world. They called themselves the Eureka Seven. Coming into the building is Tsunayoshi "Tsuna" Sawada, the new 10th Mafia Boss, flanked by his associates/bodyguards, Hayato Gokudera and Takeshi Yamamoto, from Katekyo Hitman Reborn. Tsuna was one of the Eureka Seven. Asking where the others where, they get interrupted by the sound of a Skylight smashing, which is Detective Conan (another member of the Seven), who lands in the middle of them, dead. Looking up, a tall blond figure is there, who tosses a piece of paper at them, and leaves. Yusuke and Sena go to follow.

Tsuna orders Yamamoto to follow as well, and then calls a number on his phone. He picks up the piece of paper, where it has written on it Detective Conan's true name, and that it. He palms the paper.

Yusuke, Sena and Yamamoto all discover that the killer is really Johann, the killer in Monster. He manages to evade them in due to a surprise attack from ghouls.

A car pulls up to a new building, and out comes two doctors, who join up with Tsuna, Yusuke and Sena. One is Dr. Kenzo Tenma, the other is Asada Ryutaro (Team Medical Dragon). This is one of Tsuna's resource buildings, and they perform an autopsy on Detective Conan.

Yusuke goes to an Asylum to get in contact with another member of the Eureka Seven, Ginta Toramizu (MAR). While he had saved the world, he kept claiming he went into another realm for awhile, and gained magical properties in this land. Even with all the weird stuff people had seen, he gets committed to an Asylum. Yusuke goes to talk to him. He claims that a ball and chain follows him around, talking to him. Yusuke, worried for his friend, stays a tad longer, when the lights go out in the building. When they come back, two men in black body suits with strange looking nodules are standing behind Yusuke. Ginta attacks them, and they attack back claiming that Ginta is an alien that needs to be destroyed. A fight ensues.

Across town, two men were sparring in a graveyard; one of them is Yoh Asakura (Shaman King), and Kangryong (Veritas). These are the last two members of the Eureka Seven. In the middle of sparring, Yoh's childhood friend, Manta Oyamada contacts him, telling him that the strange energy signal they have been tracking is back. Yoh and Kang track it to an abandoned apartment building. Before they can get inside, they are attacked by zombies. The two manage to defeat the zombies and get inside, where they see a black ball there, with the pictures of Yusuke and Ginta on it with the message "We killinz UR freindz LOL!" Yoh and Kang destroy the black ball.

Back at the fight, which has now raged on for over an hour, the two black clad combatants stop fighting. They mention that they were under the control of an organism called Gantz. They introduce themselves as Kei Kurono and Masaru Kato. They join up with Yusuke and Ginta, and head back to the Tenth's building.

From here, the Eureka Seven, now along with new members, try to figure out where Johann has gone.

Seventeen Years Ago

Act 2 begins with Shirahama Kenichi (History's Strongest Disciple) fighting some zombies. He is running away from them, when he gets saved by two kids, Gon and Killua (Hunter X Hunter). The three of them continue on, trying to escape the city that is now infested with zombies. Various manga characters can be seen as mindless zombies. Then, there is a flash of bright white light.
Seventeen Years Later, Present

Tsuna's spies have managed another glimpse of Johann, this time on a rooftop across town attacking a house for people who survived a strange suicide plague during the beginning of the Crisis. Eureka Seven and its allies head there.

The house is under attack by a group of zombies, once thought to be only infesting the island of Shikoku in Japan. Eureka Seven fight the zeds, to find there are three people left alive, Taisuke Kanou, Yuta Takizawa and Nami Kusunoki {Alive-The Final Evolution). These three are under attack be another man dressed in Gantz like clothing, Shinji Matō and his servant Rider (Fate/Stay Night). They murder Yuta, and Kei before getting beat back by Eureka Seven and its allies. They proclaim the world will be broken once more but this time for love.

IDing the zombies as the same ones that were confined to the plague area of Shikoku, the heroes fly to the island. Here they meet the island caretakers, Takashi Komuro and Saeko Busujima (Highschool of the Dead). Both of them mention nothing out of the ordinary happened, but aren't acting quite themselves. Taisuke notices this is the work of his nemesis, the former police officer Shigeki Katsumata, a person who has the ability to warp minds. Shigeki attacks the heroes, using Takashi and Saeko, only to be beaten back by adult versions of Kenichi, Gon and Killua. The heroes escape the island of the dead.

Returning to Tsuna's homebase, they meet a Nate River and his assistant Yuu Aikawa (Doubt). They claim to know who's behind the attacks. Insert lots of plot development that I've obviously skipped, and they arrive at the final battleground. There are more villains here, who are being manipulated by the Gantz suits to do the dirty work of the main bad. These people would include Mamoru Hijikata from Until Death do us Part, Minato Sahashi and Musubi from Sekirei, Yu Kanda and Allen Walker from D.Gray Man. The bad guy was collecting people with power to use them in his army with help from the Gantz suits.

People die, People win, it all ends with at least a couple of the original Eureka Seven alive, some of the newbies (one being Nate River), and the final bad guy, a Tsukune Aono (Rosario+Vampire). He claims that the Eureka Seven are behind his heart breaking and losing his faith in humanity. When the original Spirit Attack happened, he found a school of monsters where he meet his one and only love, a vampire named Moka. When Eureka Seven ended the Spirit Invasion, which caused a flash of white light, they separated him from Moka. Determined to bring her back or him to her, he plans on reopening the path to spirit world, no matter what happens to Earth. He then holds up a notebook, claiming it has the power to kill any person whose name is written within it's confines. To demonstrate, he writes down Yusuke's name.

And Yusuke doesn't die.

Nate River laughs as he steps out from behind the fighters. He remarks that if the notebook was really part of the Death Note then he would be able to see Ryuk, the Death God. Nate remarks how the Death God is behind Tsukune. Nate then pulls out a piece of paper from behind his watch, and writes down Tsukune's real name, killing Tsukune.

Nate says what originally killed Conan was the virus he was infected with years and years ago. It finally won out against his immune system. Other loose plot points are dealt with.

The End.
