Just saw a trailer for this on t.v

This film looks pretty damn good.

"Pan's Labyrinth" is the story of a young girl that travels with her mother and adoptive father to a rural area up North in Spain, 1944. After Franco´s victory. The girl lives in an imaginary world of her own creation and faces the real world with much chagrin. Post-war Fascist repression is at its height in rural Spain and the girl must come to terms with that through a fable of her own.

Has anybody seen this? I want to go but my girlfriend insists she doesn't read fast enough to see a movie with subtitles. I keep telling her that there aren't going to be many words and it's going to be very visual and easy to understand, but I honestly have no idea if this is true or not. So if anybody has seen it, am I right or am I just being a jerk trying to get my girlfriend to see a movie that she won't enjoy?

I didn't know it had subtitles

Thank god you told me.

Oh, totally. It's not like this'll deliver the same kind of big-screen thrills that only something like John Tucker Must Die could. I always wait for the best movies of the year to come to the dollar bin at Blockbuster.

Grow up.

Look...I know movies are your bag and all....but you seriously need to get over the fact that someone might have a different opinion than you when it comes to films.

I mean wow---so I'm not excited for some twisted fantasy film. Big deal. Grow up and grab a cigar and eat some meat.

It's a war film with fantasy in it.

Meh. Semantics.

I'm a big fan Guillermo's films....but this one just doesn't intrigue me at all. At first I thought this might've been some twisted version of "Alice In Wonderland"....but then after reading wikipedia I discovered that it isn't. But even when I thought it to be a variation of "Alice" I still wasn't intrigued.

My interest piqued.

I just a saw a showing of this tonight. I hadn't really looked up a lot about this film, just knowing the basic plot, so I went in pretty neutral and without expectations and came out with this conclusion :

"This is one of the best films I have seen in the past five years."

It's a riveting, beautiful, dark, touching, horrifying, mesmerizing, fantastic, intelligent and rich movie. I think that's enough adjectives. Seriously though, it deserves every one. It's a film that weaves a texture all its own and really leaves a mark with an incredibly emotional story and all the while exploring our conceptions of fantasy and reality, darkness, pain, relationships. DO NOT BE FOOLED BY THE CONCEPT THAT THIS IS A "FANTASY" FILM. It is something far more that is simply rooted in the age old device of taking our fairytales and mythologies, the common things that bind us, and using them to explore ourselves. On the same note of not thinking of this as a fantasy movie, DO NOT TAKE KIDS TO THIS. It is very brutal in places,
at one point we witness a man getting his face beaten in with a wine bottle
and very dark throughout. To any parents not big on censorship, I still recommend seeing it first yourselves to judge if you think your kids are mature enough to handle it.

Anyways, possibly the best movie of 2006 (this, Children of Men and The Departed are really tearing at me for that spot) and possibly one of my new favorite movies of all time. I think I'll see it again tomorrow, but, wow. It's just incredibly good and powerful. SEE IT.

I agree. It's still classically Guillermo, but for some reason it holds less interest/fascination for me than anything else he's done.

I want to see this movie so badly, but every time I want to go, something comes up. Plus, I'm an honest 16-year-old, so I still go with a parent ('cept for Clerks II -- that was an exception). But, man, 3 more months until I turn 17, and then my whole moviegoing problems will become easier. Actually, will they? I only have a permit, and not a license, and there's no chance of me getting one by April. How do I let the people at the theater know I'm seventeen? I'm sure someone else here has wondered this about themselves?

Anyone?

An extra twenty on top of the ticket price might work.

Heehee.

No, but for cereally, guys, does anyone know what to present to the ticketperson if you don't have your drivers license yet? Is there just a license license that you can get or what?

:D

My school sells general student ID licenses which can be used for these kinds of things. You should ask about them.

You got a job? A checking account w/ check card?

I ask because even though I'm 26 and don't have to worry about such age restrictions like you----I never stand in line for tickets anymore. I either Fandango the tix or more and more I'm seeing ticket kiosks at theaters.

You can buy your tickets on those---only it has to be with check/credit card. They might have a "Rated R-No one under 17..." warning but you just hit ok and finish buying your tickets.
