So... yeah what's your music player of choice?

I don't mean like an iPod or a ZEN, i mean what software do you use to listen to music and/or watch video files?

Are you a Winamp person? iTunes? Any particular reason? Features? Sound quality?

I'm beginning to notice that in the past few days the new Winamp (5.5) does play music nice, but for some reason it doesn't give my .avi files the same sound quality that Zoom Player does. I could be just not using the settings right, but I'm an ignorant troll who leaves everything on default.

But generally speaking, I listen to a lot of music... so I use Winamp cause it loads fast when I'm trying out a track I haven't loaded into my iTunes Library... which is of course what I use for my Nano.

So any unloaded tracks I want to listen to NOW... Winamp. But if I plan to keep the music running for a while, and am playing stuff that I listen to habitually, then its iTunes for me, even though I am getting kind of sick of it.

I'm honestly a little baffled about all the iTunes hate I've seen floating around - not here, but generally. All sorts of people seem to be filled with rage by its very existence, but it works just fine for me.

I like iTunes. I really do.

I just happen to be an obsessive-compulsive tagger, especially since I'm almost always scrobbling on last.fm. And because I have an entire 40GB hard drive just crammed with music, it can get a little unwieldy to manage it all, which I believe is not entirely the fault of iTunes.

However, it does 'lose points' simply because a lot of its strengths/benefits are things that I just don't use such as the online functionality and the iTunes store, and the podcatching device (I use Juice for that).

It boils down to a very sad & simple reason that Winamp just loads faster. :p

Being on a Mac, I stick to iTunes, I love the organization setup, and Coverflow is the awesomes.

Now, when it comes to watching .mkv formatted fansubs, I use Quicktime or MPlayer.

I don't have a portable music player(there's no where I'd listen to music outside of the house... when walking I like to be able to hear what's going on around me, and on the bus or in class, I can't stand the fact that other people can hear what I'm listening to).

My laptop is my hardware and my player is Windows Media.

I like and use iTunes and prefer it to anything else I've used, but it's not without its faults. I would like to see more network support. But it's far better than Windows Media Player or WinAmp.

iTunes doesn't work for me. It used to, but I uninstalled it and when i went to reinstall I just get some random error message. Its really annoying since I have a $25 gift card for the store.

I use Media Monkey since it can synchronize with my Zen. Its fine, nothing really special.

You have to use iTunes. The visualizer.
I never really cared much for visualizers. Although they are great when you happen to be drunk, stoned or high.

I tend to use VLC player for .mkv formatted fansubs, but I will be the first to admit that it is not the best player for that thing. I dislike any video player that doesn't have a step forward/backward function.

What is this 'network support' you speak off?

Even though I am relatively tech proficient, I haven't been up to date since the year 2002, and know nothing about these things. I also haven't updated my iTunes software since 2005.

How would you compare iTunes against the new Winamp, which from the first few days I've had to mess with it, seems to be a wannabe iTunes that happens to load a little faster.

Totally agreed. Complete waste; I never use them.

Nonexistent, at least as far as I know. I would like to keep my 115+ GB iTunes library on a server which has a RAID array and is backed up off site, but as far as I know it is not possible to sync over a network. There's no reason why they shouldn't let you do that.

Hopefully it's possible and I just haven't figured it out yet.

it's totally doable.

Go into preferences, select the Advanced tab. Choose wherever you have your music folder located. Select, "Keep your iTunes folder organized" and "Copy imported music to your music folder". Then add your music from where you have it saved to.

To be fair, I like a few visualizers and find them entertaining for a whole of five minutes before I decide I want to start doing other things while listening to music. Like downloading Radiohead's new album through Soulseek.

You are one crazy music fan.

Also, is there any reason I really should get around to upgrading to the new iTunes?

Hmmm...I will definitely try it. Right now I have it all on a 250 GB external drive that is almost full with the music, movies, and TV shows.

I think most of the more recent changes have been specific to the iPhone and iPod Touch, so if you don't feel like sitting through a 50 MB+ download you probably aren't missing anything.

And yeah, I like music. I will try just about anything, especially if I can do so for free.

That is my life motto.

I mean today I am listening to Berliner "country, blues, folk, bluegrass, rock 'n' roll and swing" and some Chinese indie rock.

I should really finish making that mix tape, but I'm really worried about alienating everybody if I decide to make it a Japanese indie rock set --- because it would be easy to make right now for that is the mood I am in --- and people have been generally cold to Japanese music here.
