My library system is offering a 16-week online course on Web Technology, and even though participation is voluntary, I thought I'd at least do the assignments dealing with topics I don't know much about yet. (RSS, downloading MP3 files, YouTube, etc.).

This week we're starting a blog. The class moderator has suggested several possible host sites, but I'm leaning toward either Bloglines.com or Blogger.com. Has anyone used either of these sites, or does anyone have a different host site that you think is really great? I do have some computer and Internet experience, so I'm not a total newbie at this, if that helps...

I usually have more technically enthusiastic people mess with these things for me (even though I am actually quite technically apt), so Compound handles this stuff for us.

That said, I recommend Wordpress, which is where I put Bento Physics and Nucleus, which is where I used to co-blog with Compound.

I have two blogs at Blogger, one for each of my kids. It's owned by Google so if you have a Gmail account you're pretty much already signed up. It's very easy to use and requires zero HTML or coding knowledge for the basic stuff.

I've heard decent things about Blogger and Wordpress. Lots of people seem to be all tingly over Tumblr at the moment but I don't think that would suit you - its more about stream of consciousness rather than, y'know, cohesive posts.

Thanks, guys. I appreciate the suggestions.

We use Wordpress for my library's official blog, and I contribute to that one frequently, so Wordpress would also be a possibility. I'm just wondering if there's a blog site that is really outstanding, or if they're pretty much the same.

Yes, the Detroit Sports Vibe is the sort of thing I'm shooting for. I think if I'm going to post in a blog, it should involve useful information. Presumably my early posts will deal with the course I'm taking, but once that's over, I'm hoping to delete those and keep an on-going archive of graphic novel reviews or something related. I don't understand this need people seem to have to natter on about random subjects, or to post personal information where everyone with an Internet connection can read it.

Your kids have blogs? I'm guessing they're not quite up to posting themselves yet.... Do you post for them, or about them, or are you just holding the sites open for when the kids are able to post on their own?

The idea right now is to post pictures and stuff like that for out-of-state relatives. When they get older I plan on showing them how to use them and what they can do with them, assuming technology hasn't evolved such that they can transmit messages via telepathy or something.

I've decided to go with Blogger, and have actually started two blogs (because one just isn't enough to contain my overly-wordy posts.... )

One really does have reviews of graphic novels, but there are only two entries at the moment, since I've been swamped doing other tasks at work. The second I've titled Librarian on the Road, and I will be using it to post pictures and commentary of various vacations. This one is mainly for the three or so people on the face of the Earth who 1) care, and 2) live too far away from me to see my actual vacation scrapbooks.

Anyway, thanks for the ideas and suggestions, guys.

I've been out of blogging for awhile, but I want to get back.

Does anyone have any suggestions for something that is not only easy to use, but features the same kind of modular capacity as say iGoogle/Pageflakes?

I want to be able to display last.fm, my del.icio.us bookmarks and other things and incorporate it into the layout elegantly, meaning I don't want to end up breaking the damn thing like I do to insert last.fm into multiply and I don't want to be cursed with fugly unchangeable layouts. Ability to store multimedia content (small video and/or music files) would be nice.

I don't know what this twitter, boxnet, tumblr stuff is about, even though I have accounts, so I'd like to know what I can do with those. Also, I really don't want to use either Multiply (which I break too often), MySpace (which is ugly), Friendster (which nobody outside of Southeast Asia reads) or Facebook (which most people in the Philippines seem to ignore).

I've been very pleased with WordPress. (Points at sig.) Though I'm not sure about the bookmarks, (Haven't tried everything yet.) there's a nice selection of layouts and designs, and they have a service for storing media, which they're constantly trying to get me to use.
