The Hobbit

Apparently one film will be an adaptation of the Hobbit, and the second film will sort of bridge the gap between Hobbit and LOTR, with stories from the LOTR appendices and such.

Huh...? I wonder if it (the "sequel") might also include any material from The Silmarillion?

I could see that.

Del Toro's been hitting the mythological creature stuff pretty hard. I have no doubt that he'd do well with bringing The Hobbit and Super-**** Talking Smaug to life.

It'd just be nice to see Jackson do the whole thing.

Agree, but I'm still extremely happy with Del Toro directing and Jackson producing. It'll have a slightly different tone/feel that the LotR Trilogy, which is exactly what it needs to be. I think the way things are panning out will result in a success.

It could be horrible and tank at theaters, but right now it seems just the opposite is likely.

Um.....this will suck.

I call it.

I disagree. See above.

I doubt it. It would be freakin' sweet if they dedicated at least part of it to the war between the dwarves and goblins. That would be so awesome to see on screen.

CS/SHH!: What's the most daunting thing with taking on a project of that size besides the time involved?
GDT: There's the scope, and the learning curve, because the amount of things I've gotta learn. I fell in love with "The Hobbit" but I'm marrying an entire mythology. It's like meeting the family of a girl you're going to marry… you get them all, and I fell in love with "The Hobbit" and now I'm familiarizing myself with not only the trilogy--the trilogy I only finally read--but every single thing I can read that Tolkien generated about Middle Earth or about him I'm reading, and in terms of the visuals. In order for the two movies to seamlessly involve into the trilogy, I have to literally put myself through the biggest "making of" ever assembled. I'm going to watch all the dailies of "Fellowship" and I'm going to watch most of the dailies of "The Return of the King." I'll watch as much material as I possibly can take, the camera reports... everything. By the end of the second ("Hobbit") movie, you have to be able to have evolved towards "The Lord of the Rings" and feel that it's a complete continuation.

Just something I found in an interview with Del Toro. One of the things I was worried about was that he might try to change the style of the movies to match his own, but it looks like he is going to focus on keeping these movies stylisticly the same as the trilogy.

Here's the full interview

I like the sound of that. Its cool that he's sticking with the tone of the LotR trilogy.

One day, I look forward to sitting down in front of my TV and watching all five movies in a row (I imagine it'll take 3/4 of a day). Hopefully they'll release Extended versions of the Hobbit films on DVD as they did with the LotR movies.

From what I hear they are going after all the old cast members, which is good. They will probably have to recast bilbo though because, well, he's frickin' old in the trilogy.

Yeah, but he didn't age, like, at all between Hobbit and Fellowship because of the ring. He'd still work.

I'm very excited about the Hobbit. But the sequel? I hate the concept of doing a Middle Earth movie that Tolkein didnt write. The Hobbit's sequel is the Lord of the Rings, not some unwritten story. It pisses me off.

That said, I do like the direction both movies are going in.

but the actor playing him is ancient. I think this guy would work...

His name is Martin Freeman. I wonder if he is of any relation to Morgan???

Heh, Martin Freeman. I doubt I could take The Hobbit seriously if he was Bilbo.
