Seriously. That's how they capitalize the name. Strike one. This is a limited series by Chris Claremont. Strike Two. It's an alternate timeline. Strike three.

But I picked up the first issue. I figured, what the hell, it was a light week for me. And... it's not bad. Not great mind you, but the execution is better than a lot of recent first issues. Cable, I'm looking at you.

This story takes place in present day, but the alternate part is that in this world everyone has aged in real time. In other words, the early X-Men are old and gray. Their kids, or in some cases grandkids, now have to take up the mantle. We're introduced to the team. Colossus the Third, "Rico" (their quotation marks not mine), Olivier Raven, Becka Munroe, and No-name. You heard me. No-name. Then we immediately have a mid-twenties looking X-23 kick their asses. Spends too much time dealing with the drama Ororo's kid has with her powers, but didn't lag badly enough for me to get bored. Ends with team unity and what have you. Not bad. But the really interesting part of this is guessing whose kids some of these are. Becka, Colossus, and Olivier are at least partially given to us. Becka is Storm's kid with a mystery father. Colossus is apparently the grandson of the original with mystery grandmother and mystery parents. Olivier is Gambit and Rogue's kid.

So that leaves No-Name and "Rico" with no parental information and Becka and Colossus with partial info. So I'm taking all bets. More spoilier (it's a word) spoilers ahead folks.

My guess is that "Rico" is the son of Franklin Richards. They say he's third generation superhero, but never say third generation mutant. The only ability he's shown so far is invisibility, but in some preview pages his left arm and leg are shown bending like a rubberband and the character write ups in the back say his dad and granddad are geniuses.

Becka's Dad isn't stated, but Claremont says he's using X-Men: The End as a guide. He took Olivier straight from the pages of that series. And in that series Storm was with Wolverine. But Becka's past is supposedly in the Savage Land so who knows.

Colossus' parents are irrelevant since we wouldn't know or care about them anyway. But his Grandmother could be interesting. I'm pulling for Kitty, but probably not.

No-name is a complete mystery. With no name or powers to go on I've got nothing.

Colossus does currently have a kid in the Savage Land that he doesn't know about, so 3rd's grandma might be some Shanna wannabe.

I pointed this out in the Previews catalog to compound, who was a big fan of Generation Next/Generation X and his only words were: "Chris Claremont? Pass."

This was...horrible. I mean, it was atrocious. Absolutely nothing happens as Claremont attempts to develop characters (and falls on his face, as he has for the last ten years). This is exactly the reason why the comic industry has been dying for the last decade.

The comics industry is failing because Chris Claremont can't develop characters?

That's the dumbest thing I've ever read on this site. Ever.

First of all, the issue wasn't that bad. It wasn't great by any stretch of the imagination, but it certainly wasn't a symptom of a "dying" industry.

Second, Chris Claremont has been banished to alternate realities and out of continuity stories. He's hardly responsible for the state of the comic industry.

Third, the industry isn't dying. While it will certainly never hit the highs it had during the speculators market of the 90's, it isn't facing a crash anytime soon.

There was nothing about your post that made even the littlest bit of sense. I hope you were drunk when you posted it.

I think he meant poorly developed characters (such as those written by Claremont) are contributing to a failing comic book industry.

Now whether you believe the characters were poorly developed in GeNext or whether the comic book industry is failing at all is a different ball of wax altogether, but I don't think Doc Comic's proposition is THAT stupid.

I think it's fairly stupid. The comic book industry failing isn't a different ball of wax since it comprises half of his post and it's wrong. He arbitrarily picks one bad comic that's a silly little out of continuity mini-series and then comes here to tell us that it's indicative of a dying comic book industry with no reasoning or examples to back it up. The two things have NOTHING to do with each other and no connection is provided by the poster.

Some dumb mini-series by a writer that most people have given up on isn't cause for concern about the industry as a whole.

Genext is not something to measure the state of the comic book industry on at all, I mean for the last 8 years the industry has been doing progressively better and better, It's mainly because of event stories and comic book movies. Sure eventually those bubbles will burst because people are clearly getting tired of events, and superhero movies will probably fall out of favor at some point in the future.

The industry may not be making the money of the 90's, but It's doing incredibley well, and the quality of books are at a point where you'd have to go back atleast 20 years before you could find such large amounts of quality from all the major companies.

Genext is just a non-continuity non-important series, with no-name characters, that was cooked up to keep Claremont busy because beleive it or not in some circle's his name still sells.
