Phished

My Myspace account has been phished. So I tried to change my password, and it still says it's phished. So I decided to change the username, so I created a new username at Yahoo. It said that it will send a confirmation code to my old address, but I haven't been on that account in over four months, so I can't access my mail or anything. So I dunno, I guess I'm ****ed.

I have no idea what this means.

It means I must have gone to a fake Myspace page where someone stole the username and password that I entered.

And on Tom's Myspace page that talks about phishing, he says:

And, again, if you think your account is phished right now, just change your password. That locks the phisher out, simple as that.

I've changed my password about six times, and it still says that my account is phished.

How might that have happened?

Also, Myspace is good at not updating information. I've always got new message alerts that remain after I view/delete all of the new messages.

That's because you're old.

Here is what you need to do in order :
  • First scan pc for viruses
  • Delete viruses found
  • Scan pc for spyware (recommended program to get if you do not have one = spybot search and destroy)

Those steps are if it keeps been phished sounds like someone can see your passwords ect... on your pc so you need to remove anything it finds incase.

Now becoming un-phished (is un-phished or even phished a word?)

  • reactivate yahoo mail account
  • Change e-mail password
  • Get pasword sent again from myspace
  • Change Myspace password
  • Delete any friends on your list you do not know
  • Change your secret question on both myspace and yahoo.
  • wait and see as myspace may take a while to change your phished status.

I said change E-mail password as if it's the same or secret question is they could have your e-mail account.

Remember password needs to be hard to figure out on sites like myspace and e-mails. Best is really hard passwords like "uidfghjikl6754w54" It's random it's both letters and numbers. You just randomly hit letters and numbers on key board to get a string in word document. copy and paste as password and write it down.

Secret question : Best secret questions are wrong answers e.g "who is spider-man?" answer "Final Fantasy VII" It makes no sense yes. So no one can the answer you just have to remember the answer.

Hopefully this will help you

Thanks, I'll try that.

When I try to reactivate my account, it says "You don't have permission to access this URL on this server."

He was probably either infected with a piece of spyware that redirected his web browser to the fake Myspace page so when he entered his details they pinched his username/password that he entered into the form just by writing a bit of HTML that sends those details to the phisher when he hit enter, OR the phisher sent out a load of emails designed to look like Myspace, so when someone mistook it for the real Myspace and entered their details to log in through a link on that email, they get the details. Very easy to set up and do and a hell of a lot of people fall for it. It is also how a lot of identity theft happens, by sending out fake bank e-mails asking for your passwords and such, so they can log into your account and rob you blind.

So Langsta, be thankful it was just your Myspace account.

Make sure you are also using a decent Virus checker, AVG is a very good free one.
Once you have run virus checks and Spybot, also get a program called SpywareBlaster. It will act as a second layer of protection to your PC and block any crap that tries to get in. You don't need to run it after the first setup, as it stays active. Spybot shouldn't pick up any infections after that, but is great to use to clean up any leaks through SpywareBlaster.

Another good tip when it comes to using passwords is to keep them in a notepad document (obviously named something that isn't related to passwords, so don't go calling it 'THIS IS MY MYSPACE PASSWORD' - one idea is to call it something random like MPG345, then changing the icon to something that makes it look less like a .txt doc) Then before logging into an account, open up the document and copy and paste the password in. It may sound stupid, but it will help stop the vast majority of Keylogger spyware programs that could have been installed on your PC, as they would normally be set to record data entered into secure fields usually on a browser. By copy-pasting it in, you don't use any keystrokes so it has nothing to record.

Also, if you are using Internet Explorer, don't be a moron, drop it and install Firefox. Firefox is much better at stopping most basic spyware programs, unlike IE which is like trying to catch water in a fishing net.

What area do/did you live when you created account? E.g american use .com , .co.jp.

He's right about both of these.

Yup, I am. I have the qualifications to prove it as well.

As long as it's not a Microsoft qualification:p I joke about that for reason that I have friend who fantastic on pcs and are microsoft certified and even have qualification hanging on wall.

Yet everytime you phone microsoft helplines all that training goes on "turn it off then back on" god I hate that. I think they tell you that so if by some miracle it fixes it great if not it gives them time too look it up.

LOL, no, I have a degree in Internet Technology and did a lot of IT security work in that. Plus i have to keep up to date with the general stuff, so I can teach it to my students..lol

My personal pet hate is the AOL tech support. My dad signed up to them and won't change. I have had many arguments with those knuckledragging morons who can't even read the advice card they are given properly..

"OK, turn your computer off and on."
"But the connection issue is affecting all THREE computers plugged into it, surely turning off ONE machine is not going to have much of an effect?"
"That computer might have spyware on it, so it might."
"Ok......that did nothing."
"Ok, I've done all I can do, I'll put you onto Level 2 support."
*20 minutes of hold music*
"Hi, so can you turn your PC on and off for me please?"
*Hangs up.*

I know, when I was in college, 'phishing' was a term used for people who went to Phish concerts for the women.

But that's a different hairy situation

And at a Phish concert, probably hairy women too.

That's why I wrote hairy.

Glad someone got it.

Funny it happens to be the other guy who turned 30 this year.

For the record, I don't like Phish.

I would only be able to name one song by them.

And no, not because I don't remember.

Jerks.
