I know there's a lot of stuff that people don't like about Ultimate Spider-Man, like Spidey's Jewish Tourettes or the Clone Saga, but there has been a lot of good stuff to come from USM.

Peter telling MJ about his being Spider-Man in #13. Great idea IMO.

Electro was done pretty well, considering how ****ty he's been treating in 616.

I kinda like how the Goblin is an actual goblin-type creature.

Other good stuff?

I liked the more realistic interpretations of the characters. Kraven in particular. I just liked the idea of a celebrity pretending to be a hunter and then getting the latest in genetic engineering so he could be more successful. I thought it was neat.

I've always liked the supporting cast more than the villains or even Peter. Story arcs that followed Peter closely were usually the ones I didn't like as much as when the others were involved.

Spider-Man's always had the best supporting cast.

I actually prefer 616 Electro, he has more personality and they actual tried to explain some of his motives (having a crippling self esteem problem that led to an alomost sucessful suicide attempt). Ultimate Electro just doesn't have that level of depth.

Anyway the best thing about USM is it has been able to be relatively streamlined and not become convoluted, unlike most other Ultimate titles or the 616 Spidey comics. No BND is always a plus.

I really like how they portray Osborne/Green Goblin. I actually like all the villians better. I also like Peter much better. The way he is written really recaptures the essense of the character that has been lost throughout so many years of heavy continuity in the 616 universe.

And I agree with projectx, I also enjoy the more realistic interpretations of the characters. That is what I liked about the entire UU.

And I can't help but love the never ending fat jokes when Pete is dealing with Kingpin.

I hate it.

Gotta agree with E. Norman Osborn as Norman Osborn is a far better than his Goblin counterpart.

I think it's mostly because Ultimate Norman is a little more close to the egomanical version Ellis portrayed him as in Thunderbolts. He's the closest thing Marvel will have to a Lex Luthor.

By adding the Goblin-super power thing it actually cheapens the character. It turns him into a horny (get your mind outta the gutter), fire-throwing version of the Hulk.

Well I do think a guy in a goblin costume is more realistc then a guy who turns into a goblin.

However I think Norman needs his goblin side to be a complete villain, he shouldn't just be a Lex Luthor clone, he can rely on schemes and such to meet his ends, but he shouldn't be afraid to get his hands dirty now and again and mix it up with spidey. He is a combo of brains and brawns, that's what makes him dangerous. However it just being costume is far more realistic then turning into a goblin.

Anyway i think villains is not one of the things USM has done well, most of the 616 villains have more personality at this point. Bendis could always change that though and he really should.

I get that but I still love how he was done in the Legacy plot, like making him an actual goblin with a cloak it great and making it all basically an acid trip. I agree that it's pretty unoriginal and lame if he doesn't have the cloak and standing upright.

Right. Norman Osborn is, above everything, crazy. Kukoo. Banannas. He's the Marvel version of The Joker. His monstrosity comes from his insanity. Turning him into an actual mutated monster cheapens this. A comic character who is certifiably insane is much scarier than a dime-a-dozen mutated monster who throws fireballs (yawn).

Nutty 616 Norman Osbourn who was so kooky that he dressed up in a broadly-smiling green goblin costume is much more effective and unique than a guy who gets mad and turns green. Because like Doom said, it's been done.

The worst part about it, to me, is that the UU had the chance to be an edgier remake of the 616 universe, and thinking about all of the ways an insane psycho like Norman Osborn could be made even more insane and how he, the human, could have terrorized Peter just further demonstrates what a waste this whole line has been.

Which reminds me - I gotta change the name of this place.

Does Ultimate Marvel really need a Lex Luthor-like character from Osborn? They have Kingpin already who has the whole "man-in-control" thing about him.

Well most of the UU villain are idiotic thugs, we definitely need more well formed, at least slightly intelligent villains

Yeah....but when was the last time we saw Kingpin? You can't be a major player and not be around. Hell....if we were gonna measure villainry levels based on appearance---Shocker would be the evilest bastard alive.

So who is more evil: "never around" Kingpin or Shocker?

Again who's fault is that? There is no balance in the UU, villains are either evil geniuses or stupid thugs, there is no one who is just competent.

616 Vulture was never a true genius, but he was competent enough to not be a stupid thug. Ultimate vulture is another thug.

The fact there is no real Ultimate Mysterio or Chameleon is kinda a waste, USM never has to deal with villains that present a solely mental threat.

It seems like Bendis thinks you need have super powers to be a threat, I guess if he was writing Superman or Batman, he would give Lex and the arkham rogues super powers, because otherwise they aren't threats in his view.
