San Diego ComicCon '09

So I've been a bit hype for the final Lost panel happening at 11am, I was all "sweet 2 hours to go" then I remembered about the time zones differences. Now I are sad :(

This is going to sound REALLY stupid, but what happens at a Comic Con? I live in Mass, was considering Boston, but they don't list much info, and the artists there seem kinda... lame... Some more insight would be apprechiated!

I wish I could get a chance to go to Comic-Con. I've always wanted to go, and it's funny 'cause it always happens around my birthday. But I don't know how to get tickets or anything.

Happy Birthday!

As for getting tickets - I'm sure if you went to the website you could preorder your tickets and what not. The expenses would really come from the hotel, the flight, and the merchandise you'd want to pick up.

It depends on the convention organizers and other factors. Usually representatives from comic book publishers will show up and present info on upcoming events or title releases. You'll see trailers for films based on comic book characters, panel discussions on aspects of comics, talks with writers and/or artists. There's usually a dealers' room, where people who buy and sell comics and other items (like action figures) will be set up. You can frequently get good deals on issues or trade volumes or other things like t-shirts. People who make their own costumes will often be wandering around the con, and many will let you take their picture.

You might want to check out some of the other threads where members report from conventions:

Wizard World Philadelphia

New York Comic-con

I'm sure there are more, but the Search function is still working poorly. These will give you some ideas of panel topics and other things happening at cons.

Those are great places to start. I haven't been to Comic Con but I've been to Wizard World Chicago twice. Ice is right - EVERYTHING happens. Publishers (comics and games, as well as movie studios) put on panels showing some upcoming stuff they are doing. Many times they will follow with Q&As. There are booths with artists, actors, and lots of other marginally famous people where you can get autographs, photos, and buy stuff from them. Dealers of all kinds also get booths selling just about anything you can imagine.

I might be alone on this but I personally couldn't care less about any of the panels. Most of them are excruciatingly boring - even the ones that are about things I'm interested in. And they are capped off by morons asking stupid questions. I avoid them.

My favorite thing about them is digging through the 50% off TPB bins. You can find some great stuff at great prices.

Thanks.

How much does that stuff usually cost?

Swear to God, I don't know. Depends on where you're flying in from, where you're staying... I'm sure people who've been to SD can tell you more. That said, if you have any questions, I can always ask Allison since she and Adam go every year.

When I went last year, I payed 75 for the ticket, 300 dollars for a 3 night stay in a cheap motel with one king bed, and about 150 dollars in gas for a 6-7 hour drive.

Plus food expenses, buying stuff, the zoo, movies.

The hotel and gas prices I split with two other people, so we each paid like 100 each.

So, $525 for the experience of a lifetime? Sounds fair.
