This is a gem of a comic that I read earlier today. It contains 6 stories, each one dealing with the Victorian parlour game of murder!!!!
Each of these stories is masterfully executed. Not only is the art wonderfully dynamic, but the stories are brilliant. Each story is just 7 pages long, but they twist and turn beautifully.
The first story has an old man pose a question to the snobbish elitists, "Can you have a murder that has no murderer and no victims?" The second deals with a man arrogantly challenging a much-lauded detective to stop him from committing a murder - and if he fails, the detective will be killed too. The third deals with the quest to catch a serial killer, and one of them is just an amusing comedy, as two upper class toffs decide to create the perfect murder masterpiece by killing Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
What's so fantastic is just how original and surprising each and every story is. They were these precise clockwork stories that gave an intriguing puzzle as a premise, and then set about revealing the solution, which is always more interesting than the puzzle! (But then, is that not the whole fun of murder mysteries?)
The comic doesn't take itself too seriously, and is honest with itself. Short, simple stories that tease your brain, make you laugh, and my favourite of all reactions; put your hand on your head as if you were Columbo and you just worked out how to catch the bloody blighter.
I expected a gothic Victorian ghost story, but what I got was an anthology of murder mysteries, and I couldn't be happier. I just love this stuff.
There is a second volume available, which I will be getting when I next go to the comic shop.
I recommend picking it up if you like murder mysteries.
