Good Place to Pick Up on Uncanny X-Men

After a long time of trying, my friend finally got me into reading comics. I just finished reading through the Ultimate universe over the past month, and I really enjoyed it for the most part (Jeph Loeb...). Now that I'm used to the general concept (for lack of a better word) of comic book reading, I want to make my way into mainstream continuity. Being a fan of the X-Men, I was thinking of getting into Uncanny and start getting the new issues as they came out.

Anyway - my question now:

Where would be the best place to start reading from, to catch up to the current releases without losing too much general knowledge. Eventually, I'd like to read from the beginning, but that's not something I'm ready to start now.

I was thinking maybe start with House of M, mainly because I've heard good things about it, and I like Bendis's work in the Ultimate U. Would I be able to just pick up a House of M TPB and be able to jump into it?

Yeah, you should be able to start with House of M without too much trouble, but you should really start with Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men, then HoM occurs during that run, time-line wise.

I was in your shoes a couple years ago.

I recommend reading Whedon's Astonishing and Bendis' House of M just because they're awesome stories (...yeah I said HoM was awesome). But what you should do is wikipedia the vast history of X-Men within the past few years and pick up Uncanny X-Men starting w/ #500.

From there you could be completely caught up.

Here's a good link with all the major storylines and minis concerning X-Men for the 2000s:

I haven't paid much attention to X-Men outside of X-Men Forever, I'm just here to say "Welcome!"
