Issue 5: Jonah Hex and Dr. Arkham are thrown down a waterfall/cave and are attacked by the Miagani. Cool

I really liked Justin Grey & Jimmy Palmiotti's Jonah Hex and this is just as good.

And is the giant bat supposed to be the Hyperadapter from Grant Morrison's run?

I do like how this book is adapting current Gotham characters, landmarks, events, etc. into the Hex era. It's kind of like a cool little alternate universe thing.

I'm not sure i like that Hex has a sort of entourage with Tallulah and Dr. Arkham. It's not bad at all, just kind of....wrong?

Well Tallulah showed up a bit in the old Hex book. And. Like Arkham. He's the perfect balance of nervousness and education to balance Hex. I think its a good match.

Right, but now she's basically a sidekick who is there all the time. She wasn't around nearly as much in the old book.

Re: The New 52 general discussion

In All-Star Western #17, Jonah Hex meets with Vandal Savage for what seems to be the first time. Is Return Of Bruce Wayne not in continuity anymore? Savage hired Hex directly in that and there, too, it looked like they were meeting for the first time.

All star is part of the new52. Return of bruce isn't. That's why they can meet for the 1st time. I think.

Where Morrison's run sits in the new continuity is a hot mess, from the "Dick as Batman" to how and in what form Batman Inc. existed to the whole mad time traveling bit.

I think the rule of thumb is "Those things happened but not necessarily in the exact same way they happened in the book".

The New 52 isn't like a separate reality, at least as far as I understand it. It is a reboot (even if they insist it isn't, that's how it operates). It's more of a streamlining of continuity, but the point is that in such an arrangement both of these events can't take place as described.

Yeah, ultimately it's not like it is a huge deal, but it was pretty significant at the time that Jonah Hex was part of Bruce Wayne's journey toward creating Batman so it is odd that it would contradict that like this.

My guess is we'll see much of Morrison's run quietly forgotten after Inc. wraps. Much of it is hard to reconcile with the compressed timeline and the intent to simplify the history of the character.

I've dwindled my new 52 books down to just a few titles now. All Star still being one of them but I haven't read any others with Hex. All Star takes place in early Gotham before Bruce Wayne. Maybe Hiro Nakumora from Heroes is somewhere screwing the time warp up just like he ruined his own show. The 52 doesn't seem to have all their stories figured out, they seem to wing it month by month. That's why I like Saga and Thief of Thieves, they knew where they were going before they even started.

Re: The New 52 general discussion

It is supremely disappointing with the exception of a few titles. I tried all 52 for 5-6 issues and found most of them to be completely unremarkable.

All Star still being one of them but I haven't read any others with Hex. All Star takes place in early Gotham before Bruce Wayne.

Return of Bruce Wayne spoilers:

At the end of Final Crisis, Batman gets sent back through time via the Omega Sanction and has to make his way back. He makes various stops (each issue is basically a stop in a different time period). Issue 4 takes him to Gotham City circa 1880 or so (I think), where Vandal Savage has hired Jonah Hex as a bodyguard, partly to protect him against Bruce Wayne. They tussle before Bruce is sent forward through time again.

There's more to it than that, but while it is technically "before Bruce Wayne" it still features Bruce Wayne. If you haven't read it I recommend it - it's a great series. But you should start with Batman #655 - the whole huge story starts there.

I'm not real crazy about Hex being sent forward in time to modern day Gotham. It's the kind of cheesy story that Gray & Palmiotti have avoided during their run on this book. It doesn't fit.

I didn't like Booster Gold showing up, either.

I don't like when stuff like this happens. It doesn't fit and it compromises the integrity of the book. I'm thinking back to Punisher MAX - we never even got mention of Spider-Man or anything. Jonah Hex did a great job of this, too, until Booster Gold appeared.

I didn't like Booster Gold either. Way to cheesy. This book was always funny without cheese. Booster Gold's addition made it seem like one of those free comics my son gets at Chik-Fil-A.
