So how exactly does something like this happen? Does the school organize this and send you over, or is it an outside organization?

You organize it through an outside source normally. There are companies that will send you everywhere from Africa to Japan. Before I started my teacher training I was going to go to Japan for a year, but decided to get my teaching qualification first.
