Anthology?

I've been thinking about making some kind of anthology comic magazine, which may or may not be released digitally, available to download using the CDisplay reader. I think this could be a lot of fun, and could be a good way to share our ideas.

I was thinking those interested, could have around 6 pages to do something with. You can do anything with these 6 pages, as long as it's productive. Use them to tell a prose story, show off a picture book, write/draw a comic with somebody else, whatever. Use the 6 pages in a creative way.

Would anyone be interested? I have some ideas, and I know others are interested.

Who's up for it? Just post what your idea is and let's see if we can get this working.

Commit to a deadline, and I'll tell you if I can take part. I defintiely want to.

The 6-page limit is a real difficulty for me -- I have a difficult time containing my ideas, which often have ridiculosly epic scopes. So this ought to prove a very interesting challenge. I'm up for it -- but I need to know the deadline, so I can fit my schedule around it.

I'll pledge to release a high-quality photocopied print version, here in the Philippines, regardless of whether or not I take part. I can get it consigned in places that support indepdendent/small press publications.

That's awesome about the printed version. I was hoping we could try get this out there if it was successful, as Warren Ellis has said anthology comics coming back would be the next best thing.

As for a deadline... no idea at this moment. I suppose it depends on how many people are interested, and what the ideas are.

I'd love to do it but I don't have the technology to do anything digitally myself. I don't even have a computer except what I use at work.

How very Ellisian of you.

How very Ellisian of you.

It's funny you should say that, because I remember Ellis saying in a Bad Signal newsletter how anthology comics should have a comeback.

Alright, I've discussed this with people on IM, and I've got some people interested. Ultxon and I have been discussing a prose serial continuing the story of Frankenstein, perhaps in the modern day. Thee Great One showed interest in a revamp of King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, and I have ideas for a hardboiled detective mystery prose serial, and some ideas which could make pretty good comics, except I think my drawing sucks and I don't have a scanner.

Anyone wanting to draw a piece?

I've got a comic piece I'd like to do, which can be told in 6 page segments, yet I'd need someone to draw it. It's soap opera-mystrey esque. Sorta Desperate-Housewives meets Lost.

I'm game, but as usual I'd need an artist. I'm really open storywise so if theres someone whos been looking to draw anything specific I could tailor a story around it.

...I do want to do a Cthulhu western. If anyone wants to draw tentacle gods ripping horses in half and fungus beings controlling Federal Marshals behind the scenes let me know.

I've been thinking about this. I was trying to think of an inventive idea for a superhero story and I came up with Post-Apocalyptic Super-Cowboys, living in a future where the only basis people have for society are old comic books and action movies. Life literally imitates art. Not too deep, but I think it would definitely be fun for a series of 6 page stories.

I can do the art myself, I'll just have to adjust my style to something more economic and appealing. I'm using Immonen as a model.

The ideas sound cool.

Anyone think it might be easier to just have it all as prose serials and shorts, with the odd piece of art, instead of having comic strips?

That can be done - gives the chance to add more story than if it were in comic strips.

Yeah, I think this might be the better alternative. Each issue of the anthology could collect a story from each contributor - around 6-8 pages, about anything, as long as it's original. You can choose for it to be a one-shot, or a chapter in an ongoing serial.

To get this off the ground, I suggest we begin posting the basic premise of each story, without revealing too much of the plot (so we can still be surprised when we read it), and start writing it.

Is a deadline of January 30th too early? We have around a month to write up a short story and send them to me, so I can attempt to put them together and upload 'em somewhere.

I'll have a 6 page preview of a comic I'm working on done by the 30th, and its more or less self contained. If you would be interested in more material, I could definetly get it to you by the "deadline".

It involves zombies and catholicism, and thats all I'll say for now.

Hmm, well maybe we could have comic strips in here as well. That's you and Moonmaster at the moment, with possible others in the future. They could go in between the prose parts, or something.

Anyway, I'm looking forward to it. :D

I think we could easily have a cover design that features a mock 30s style pulp anthology, with a sarcastically homoerotic title, like Young Men's Sensational Tales, or something. I mean, so far, we've got two proposal involving cowboys, one related to a post-apocalypse, one about knights, one involving Frankenstein... mosty the stuff traditionally associated with "boys' own" literature.

EDIT: I guess I have something like this in mind:

But also suggesting various genres of pulp literature, in the same image.

When did he mention this? I have my own germ of an idea for this, as well, but mine was intended as a joke.

I'm surpised Moony didn't repsond to this with a crude MS Paint bit-map of a scribbled penis. Unless he did, and it's already been deleted.

I was discussing it with him on MSN, because I have my own ideas for a revamp, but he probably won't be doing this. That means it's all free, if you're interested.

And I was thinking of contacting Bass to do a cover, if we ever did one.

So yeah, nothing happened.

Anyone want to try something still? I'm looking at exploitation/Grindhouse like stories... that would be fun.

I'd love to do an anthology, but I'm up to my eyeballs in comic commitments, between Janus, and the GF's idea, and my portfolio stuff, no luck for me.
