So my fiance and I were chatting last night, and she said something to me...."I want to understand all the Marvel movies..., and what order should I watch them?"

So it's up to me to guide her, as she remembers watching the first Iron Man, but is really hazy on the rest of the movies. She has picked them up here and there.

I'm putting together and list and would like any insight you might suggest before we start down the path of 22 movies. I have a few different plans, let me know what you think.

Plan A
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Iron Man
  • The Incredible Hulk
  • Iron Man 2
  • Thor
  • The Avengers
  • Iron Man 3
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Ant-Man
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Black Panther
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • Doctor Strange
  • Ant-Man and The Wasp
  • Captain Marvel
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame

Plan B
  • Captain America: The First Avenger
  • Captain Marvel
  • Iron Man
  • Iron Man 2
  • The Incredible Hulk
  • Thor
  • The Avengers
  • Iron Man 3
  • Thor: The Dark World
  • Captain America: The Winter Soldier
  • Guardians of the Galaxy
  • Guardians of the Galaxy 2
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron
  • Ant-Man
  • Captain America: Civil War
  • Spider-Man: Homecoming
  • Doctor Strange
  • Black Panther
  • Thor: Ragnarok
  • Ant-Man and The Wasp
  • Avengers: Infinity War
  • Avengers: Endgame

I'm leaning towards Plan B more and more due to actual time lines. I know I'd have to skip the ending of Ant-Man and The Wasp credits in either case.

Plan B with optional material.

Title is a little misleading. It's Marvel Cinematic Universe because it mainly involves movies and shows ;).

I've updated the title. It should be noted I never intended to watch the TV shows...so much content.

Here's the Russos' chronological viewing order, if it helps:

I honestly think the best way to watch them for the first time is in release order. The post-credits scenes for Captain Marvel and Ant-Man and the Wasp spoil Infinity War, and the post-credit scene of The First Avenger is a great lead in right to The Avengers. There's a little wiggle room between Civil War and Infinity War, since most of those movies can pretty much be watched in any order without affecting the other movies. I put together a little graphic not long ago that gives a few options. Watch them in order from top to bottom, and the ones within the same horizontal box can be watched in any order.

I agree, to be honest. This is the closest I'd go to release order:
Iron Man
Leads into Iron Man 2

Iron Man 2
Leads into Thor

Thor
Leads into The Avengers

The Incredible Hulk
Tony is a consultant after Iron Man 2

Captain America: The First Avenger
Leads into The Avengers

The Avengers
Leads into Iron Man 3, Thor: The Dark World and Captain America: The Winter Soldier

Iron Man 3
Leads into Avengers: Age of Ultron

Thor: The Dark World
Leads into Guardians of the Galaxy

Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Leads into Avengers: Age of Ultron

Guardians of the Galaxy
Leads into Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2
2 months after Guardians of the Galaxy

Avengers: Age of Ultron
Aftermath of Capitain America: The Winter Soldier. Leads into Captain America: Civil War

Ant-Man
Aftermath of Avengers: Age of Ultron. Leads into Captain America: Civil War

Captain America: Civil War
Leads into Spider-Man Homecoming and Black Panther

Black Panther
Week after Captain America: Civil War

Spider-Man: Homecoming
A couple months after Captain America: Civil War

Doctor Strange
Leads into Thor: Ragnarok

Thor: Ragnarok
Leads into Avengers: Infinity War

Avengers: Infinity War
Leads into Avengers: Endgame

Ant-Man and the Wasp
Leads into Avengers: Endgame

Captain Marvel
Leads into Avengers: Endgame

Avengers: Endgame
Leads into Spider-Man: Far From Home

Spider-Man: Far From Home

So, without the complicated text:
Iron Man
Iron Man 2

Thor
The Incredible Hulk
Captain America: The First Avenger
The Avengers
Iron Man 3
Thor: The Dark World
Captain America: The Winter Soldier
Guardians of the Galaxy
Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

Avengers: Age of Ultron
Ant-Man
Captain America: Civil War
Black Panther
Spider-Man: Homecoming
Doctor Strange
Thor: Ragnarok
Avengers: Infinity War
Ant-Man and the Wasp
Captain Marvel
Avengers: Endgame
Spider-Man: Far From Home

This way, it's chronological but without spoilery credit scenes.
