This is the timeline for the Batman movies of 1989-1997.

Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman suggests it's part of this universe. The Batmobile appears in the show, having been stolen. Since both the film series and the show ran at the same time, Batman Forever referencing Metropolis and Batman & Robin referencing Superman, it's easy to assume they're the same reality. It could indeed be a different universe, though. Earth-99 had the original Burton Batmobile yet took place in a separate universe.

The Catwoman movie suggests it's apart of this universe based on a picture of Selina Kyle from Batman Returns. The similar origin of the two versions of Catwoman also implies this.

This seems to be the same universe as Michael Keaton's Batman in The Flash, but it supposedly ignores the Schumacher films. If the film contradicts those events, I'll place Batman Forever and Batman & Robin as occurring Pre-Crisis while The Flash occurs Post-Crisis.

Timeline Reasoning
Bruce Wayne and Alfred look the same age between flashbacks in Batman & Robin and the other films. Bruce is seemingly happy, so I have placed flashbacks before the death of the Waynes, though it's not a definite placement.

Using Michael Keaton's birthday, since he's the most prominent Batman actor, as an indicator of Bruce's age, I have placed the death of Thomas and Martha Wayne when he would be 8 years old. This is an estimation. The newspaper about the Wayne's murder in Batman is dated October 19.

The wake of Thomas and Martha as shown in Batman Forever is between 1-2 weeks after their death.

Penguin was born 33 years before Batman Returns. Assuming that film is in 1992, the flashback takes place in 1959, Christmas time.

Bruce visiting the graves of his parents accompanied by Alfred is an unknown period of time after the Batman Forever flashback, but Bruce still looks quite young.

Batman has several contradictory dates, but in my opinion November 25 is the most prominent and clear date. It's placed in it's year of release.

The last scene in Batman Returns is implied to be Christmas. It's placed in it's year of release.

Batman Forever is set in October, and the dates are worked back from Halloween. It's placed in it's year of release.

Batman & Robin is set a indeterminate amount of time after Batman Forever. It's placed in it's year of release.

Batman: OnStar is sometime after Batman Forever based on the appearance of Riddler. A new version of Joker and Penguin appear. It's placed around when the commercials aired.

Catwoman is set an indeterminate amount of time after Batman Returns based on Selina Kyle being an existing Catwoman. It's placed in it's year of release.

The Earth-89 scene of Supergirl 5x09, "Crisis on Infinite Earths, Part 1" is set on 10 December 2019. Alexander Knox appears, reading a newspaper establishing that Bruce is still Batman and a version of the Joker, possibly a resurrected Jack Napier or successor, is around. This particular scene never happened as the Crisis was averted, and the universe played out identically until this scene in the new multiverse created by Oliver Queen.

The Flash appears to have Michael Keaton returning to the role of Batman after the events of the Batman Anthology. Batman Forever and Batman & Robin will be ignored, so for the time being they are placed pre-crisis. It has been reported that if he comes back, he'll wear the batsuit.

For the purpose of this timeline, if Michael Keaton signs on as Batman, I'll include that as apart of this universe regardless of whether they ignore Batman Forever and Batman & Robin unless they contradict those events beyond saving. I'll have to separate them if that happens, which means Batman and Batman Returns would be considered happening twice on two different universes, like with Superman I-II.

An example of how this would work:
Not a contradiction
  • Showing the Batmobile from the Burton films but not the Schumacher films. (Multiple Batmobiles)
  • Showing the Batsuits from the Burton films but not the Schumacher films. (Multiple Batsuits)
  • Having the Batcave look like the Burton films and not the Schumacher films. (Different parts of the cave/renovation/X-Men does it too)
  • Having Barbara Gordon instead of Barbara Williams. (Could be two different people)
  • Using a different actor to portray a character from the Schumacher films. (Unless they're dead)
  • Batman still kills. (Pushing it)
  • Batman says he works alone. (Dick became Nightwing, Barbara killed/retired/paralysed etc.)

Contradiction
  • Showing Val Kilmer or George Clooney as a separate Batman in the multiverse.
  • Having Billy Dee Williams appear with his face intact. (Already pushing it with his implied death)
  • Batman mentions never having a sidekick/partner.
Essentially, they really have to commit to separate them. If enough "iffy" stuff happens that's not a contradiction alone, that may be enough.

I'll also include any appearance by that Batman on the viewing order too.

I hope they just reference them as jokes. Something like "we don't talk about the mid-late 90s" or something referring to his odd wardrobe choices.

I'm watching '89, and a Newspaper at the start has the date November 25, then another November 14, then November 7 in that order.

Based on this, I'm going with:
November 25 is correct
November 14 is incorrect
November 6 is incorrect, but is taken as December 6 because of a short time jump since Joker unleashed his "product"

Is this fair?

Also, did some math to work out when Thomas and Martha were murdered using Michael Keaton's age, since he's the original and most prominent Batman actor, and I'm surprised how close the flashbacks are.

Theres a newspaper reporting on the event dated what looks like October 19th. Since it happened at night, I'd assume it would have been released the following day, pacing in on October 18th.

Chapter 6: November 25
Chapter 20: November 14
Chapter 24: November 7

I haven't seen that one.

I have noticed how much the film wants to be 1947, however.

This film is all kinds of contradictory. It does seem to be mostly consistently set in November, at least.

Edit:
Chapter 11: Batman foils Robbery

No close up on the newspaper, so I think that one can be discarded.

Chapter 14: WFTGG

This one is more clear, but it's just not as concrete as the other more clear dates.

So:
Chapter 6: November 25
Chapter 11: October 18
Chapter 14: November 11
Chapter 20: November 14
Chapter 24: November 7

Definitely November.

Timeline updated. Once I do the Chapters for Catwoman, that's it for 2 years, assuming Michael Keaton returns to the role as planned.

So it will basically be like superman returns where superman 3 and 4 were not mentioned.
Possibly. For the purpose of this timeline, I'm gonna include it all until that is fully 100% clear and The Flash is incompatible with those films.

It's confirmed the Schumacher films are in Earth-89, per Crisis aftermath and a review about Catwoman on the official DC YouTube channel, and it's confirmed they're disregarding them according to TheWrap. I'm assuming that The Flash will have Keaton come from Earth-89.

I can think of a couple explanations.
1. Batman Forever and Batman & Robin are retroactively a different Earth, say Earth-95, where Batman and Batman Returns happened but The Flash didn't.

2. Batman Forever and Batman & Robin still happened but are ignored for the sake of them being unpopular. (My hope)

3. Keaton comes from a different universe (imagine Earth-96, would be awesome) where the Schumacher films didn't happen.

4. In the new multiverse after Crisis, Earth-89 diverged after 1992 into the reality that is shown in The Flash, even though they hinted that the universes are restored to their original history (I assume Oliver felt sorry for Clark in Earth-96).

I'm holding out till 2022. It's a long time, anything could happen. I've seen possibly completely false reports that it's just a cameo, and if that's the case, it's basically the same Batman. If he has a substantial role, it depends. I guess the only thing that could really separate them is if he says that Two-Face is still around dispite his death in Batman Forever, though I suppose if Joker is alive anyone could be.

On a smaller note, if Superman Returns didn't contradict Superman III, I'd include them as the same continuity, especially because of the Superman III reference in Crisis, but they can't be because Martha Kent died in Superman III.

The second story is clearly the Burtonverse. Catwoman wears the same suit. The wiki seems to agree, too.

However, Penguin appears on a computer screen alive. Should it be assumed the story is somehow during Batman Returns, dispite the fact that Penguin looks majorly different to Danny Devito, or that Penguin was resurrected/had a successor, like Joker? I'm more leaning to the successor idea. Seems more likely. I mean... just look at him.

Hell, maybe this is canon now, haha.
I always thought of it more as a Birds of Prey prequel, the actor and suit matching that continuity, but let's take a look at it with the new information.

Pros
Batsuit
Batmobile
'89 theme
Alfred Pennyworth

Cons
Joker (retroactively alive/replaced)
Penguin (retroactively alive/replaced)
Riddler without brain injury

The only error that now exists is Riddler, but I suppose he could have recovered eventually. He gave me very Jim Carrey vibes in that scene.

Vicki Vale and James Gordon also appear. Recast aren't a problem and we only heard James Gordon's voice. I guess Bruce and Vicki got back together.

Birds of Prey resembles the Burtonverse, but more or less the same way Titans looks like the DCEU - but they're not connected.

Side note: but Lois & Clark (the 90s TV series) did have the Burtonverse Batmobile in one episode. If anything, Birds of Prey and Lois & Clark are their own little shared universe. Probably not, but the Burtonverse still doesn't fit with those two shows. :p

I was suggesting that OnStar could be in the Burtonverse now that we know canonically a new version of Penguin exists, but I used to pretend that it was in the Birds of Prey continuity, since the actor and suit match.

Essentially, I always took OnStar as a silly non-canon advertisement, but seeing how both Joker and penguin exist (see above image) after their deaths, and the various connections to the Burtonverse, I guess OnStar is canon now.

How does Lois & Clark contradict the Burtonverse? I'm pretty sure the only thing we know about that version of Batman is that he had the same Batmobile from the first two Batman films, and it was stolen.

I suppose you could argue that the original Burtonverse Batmobile was destroyed, though if you take OnStar as canon, which seems to be supported by Catwoman 80th Anniversary, "Now You See Me", which features the Michelle Pfeiffer Catwoman and a tv screen with not Danny DeVito's Penguin, then Batman recreated that version of the Batmobile. Pahaps he got sick of the disco ball and felt he needed a retro touch.
