how about because I've tried twice to get through Watchmen and couldn't do it either time...

jan120594 morning glories #19 (mr) $2.99 - If nothing is resolved or explained I'm done.
mar120502 secret #2 $3.50 - First issue was OK. I'll try two.

And I'm not getting before watchmen because I have no desire to read it. I have no doubt it'll be extremely well done. I just don't enjoy Watchmen that much.

you didn't do it.

wow, I thought I was the only one... I just couldn't get through it. It was too dark and twisted.

That's exactly why I like it - not so much that it is dark and twisted or the dark and twisted parts, but it helped comics get away from the bubble-gum happy, exclamation-points-after-every-sentence stuff of the 60s, 70s, & 80s. I have a really hard time reading those of comics.

I get that - although I like the silver age stuff more than I like a lot of the 90s comics. I guess I just have a low tolerance for dark themes in my comics/movies/books/etc. I struggled to like Grant Morrison's New X-Men, his run on Batman & Robin, etc. I'm also not a big fan of Frank Miller's Batman. It took me a while to warm up to The Dark Knight (the movie) because of how dark it was. Not that it wasn't gripping and exciting, I just didn't really enjoy it the first time I saw it. I came away from it feeling really down.

On the other hand, I loved Wolfman & Perez's run on New Teen Titans in the 80s, and that series definitely pushed the envelope to some dark places in the early 80s with stories like The Judas Contract and The Terror of Trigon I also like Miller's Daredevil stories from the early 80s.

I guess I feel like eventually the envelope got pushed further than it needed to be pushed - Watchmen, and Most of Miller's later stuff goes too dark for me to really enjoy. I want to have fun reading comics, and I don't have fun reading stuff that's overly dark (obviously that's an arbitrary standard, but I'm talking about my opinion).

I don't even think Watchmen is that dark.

Yeah, if you read comics and use them as a sort of escapism and want everything to be happy or whatever, then I can see that. I like realism myself, and I like to feel the sense of incredulous-ness that a superhero story instills when the characters and events are in a world and dealing with events that I can relate to or are close to things I've experienced. It's more fun even though it's not a happy fun.

And some of your examples are surprising...I didn't find Grant Morrison's New X-Men or Batman & Robin to be dark at all.

I don't even think Watchmen is that dark.

Parts of it are, but overall I don't think it is either. But for the time it came out, compared to the pap that was being sold at the time, it is pretty dark.

I definitely read comics as a sort of escapism. But I don't need everything to be happy, and I also don't think realism = dark. I just don't enjoy reading or watching things that are depressing, overly heavy, or twisted.

And some of your examples are surprising...I didn't find Grant Morrison's New X-Men or Batman & Robin to be dark at all.
Professor Pyg got hopped up on drugs, kidnapped little girls and bonded creepy doll's face masks onto their heads. New X-Men...maybe dark isn't the right word. Bizzare probably captures it better. Grant Morrison's stuff just always creeps me out...

The Comedian is a rapist, Rorschach sees dogs with their head split open, etc in the ink blot tests he takes. The whole count down to the end of the world. I don't know; I just didn't like it.

I'm ok with dark and twisted. I'm not OK with reading something I don't enjoy. I started Watchmen because I was excited about it. I finished it because I felt I had to. I recognize the quality in it, how it revolutionized American comics.

I just don't like it.

I think you can apply that line of thinking to ANY book. Look at Doctor Octopus in Amazing Spider-Man right now, or the now-infamous sex scene with Chameleon a couple years ago. That's pretty dark too...but I wouldn't call ASM a dark book at all.

Granted Watchmen is definitely darker than that, of course.

I wouldn't really call those aspects dark, mostly because of how they've been handled. That sketchy chameleon maybe sex, maybe not scene could have turned into a dark story if they had explored it. If Michelle had found out that chameleon had taken advantage of her and they had addressed it, that would have been a dark story. As it was, it was a side issue, almost a joke (not that it's funny, but i don't think Fred Van Lente really thought about what he was doing in that scene and then Marvel had to backtrack and say, "no no it wasn't as bad as it looked!"). Doc Ock is a darker character than he once was, and trying to destroy the earth (if that's his motivation) is a dark motivation, but he's not being handled in a dark way.

Some recent-ish Spider-Man stories that have seemed dark to me are some of Joe Kelly's stuff (his Rhino story, American Son) and that recent vulture story where he was recruiting emo runaway kids for his vulture gang and then turning off their flying power and letting them fall to their deaths if they tried to get out. The whole tone of those stories were darker.
