Dreamcasting: The Remakes Episode III - Smokey and the Bandit!

Same rules as last time.

1) The winner of the last round becomes the moderator of the round, and thus gets to choose the property or story in question to be adapted. Winner may also declare whether this property is an animated film, or a live-action one. He must also name the core characters to be cast, which should be at least 4, but no more than 9.

2) Participants may not use actors who have played the role before in the same medium before. Voice talents may not reprise their role, nor can film/TV ones.

3) After the time period set by the moderator, the round is declared closed. People will vote via PM and send it to the moderator, who will count the votes and declare winner. Like the Ultimatization Game, you CANNOT vote for yourself. REMINDER: Moderators don't vote either.

4) The winner declared gets to choose the property in the next round.


For this round, you must cast a remake of:

Smokey and the Bandit

Please keep in mind the following : I've seen old cartoons made in to films , old tv shows made in to films so ...... I want this to be an old film Remade in to a tv series to be different and Smokey and the Bandit is a great film.


You must cast :

• 'Bandit'/Bo Darville - The smooth cocky main Character who likes to try and do the impossible.
• Carrie/'Frog' - Confident , Independent Woman and the love interest of Bandit
• Cledus Snow/'Snowman' - Bandit's funny sidekick who never goes anywhere with out his dog
• Junior Justice - The dumb son of the sheriff who was left at the alter by Frog
• Sheriff Buford T. Justice - cranky old Sheriff hell bent on bringing Bandit to justice
• Big Enos Burdette - rich greedy man who challenges Bandit to do the impossible
• Little Enos Burdette - Big Enos's own mini version of himself.

Voting starts : June 27th at Noon, Eastern US Time.

I wanted a choice no one expected to me pick , I was think of some when Doom said too and I narrowed it down to this or M.A.S.K but then someone mentioned M.A.S.K and didn't want people to think I stole the idea so I picked this one as the first 2 films are great , It's unexpected and could make a great tv show.

Dude. Awesome choice. Really. Smokey and the Bandit is the ****. The main goal of the movie was to ship cases of COORS across the country. Just ignore the fact that they're illegally transporting bottled beer across a large percentage of the United States in a time where Prohibition isn't in effect. He's shuttling COORS! Not even silver bullets! Coors! I like that.

I'll get on this shortly. Keep in mind, there's already been a remake/sequel with new actors, so don't go casting Brian Bloom.

Am I the only person who finds it ironic that an Englishman chose such a quintessentially American property to remake?

Anyway, I'm not a fan of this series at all -- in fact, I've never watched a single movie. But in the spirit of competetiveness, i'm taking part. Forgive me, if my interpretation of the characters diverges from their original versions.

Stephen Dorff as Bo 'Bandit' Darville - Granted, Dorff hasn't done much recently. In fact, he's been reduced to appearances in B-movie fare like Alone In The Dark, or supporting roles in blockbusters like World Trade Center. But then again, seven or eight years ago, who expected Kiefer Sutherland to ever be a major TV star? So I say, give the Dorff a chance. Based on his strong performances as iconoclasts and rebel types in smaller indie films like The Power of One, and John Waters' Cecil B. DeMented, I have utter confidence that he's got what it takes to put his own memorable spin on the role that made Burt Reynolds a star.

Jayma Mays as Carrie/'Frog' - Basically, anybody who i'd cast as Tulip in a Preacher adaptation seems like they could also play Frog, since they're fundamentally the same kind of character -- indepdendent-minded, fiesty Southern girls, who aren't too proud to indulge in old-fashioned ideals about running off with a modern-day cowboy. With that in mind, I cast Jayma Mays (Epic Movie), on the strength of her three guest appearances as free-spirited Texan waitress Charlie on Heroes.

Alan Tudyk as Cledus 'Snowman' Snow - With his track record on ensemble properties like Firefly and Knight's Tale, Tudyk is well-prepared to take on the role of Bandit's trusty sidekick, and handler of the scene-stealing mutt, Freddy.

Brian Cox as Sheriff Buford T. Justice - Vetran character actor Brian Cox normally plays more stern Southern antagonists -- he was the guy who played Stryker in X-Men 2 -- so he's a shoe-in for the part of the cantankerous, persistent Sheriff. His involvement with comedy troupe Broken Lizard's cult hit Super Troopers should leave no doubts about his mastery of comedic timing.

Max Casella as Junior Justice - Fresh off the newly-concluded Sopranos comes Max Casella. Junior is basically a simple-minded but imposing fellow, who can be menacing when he needs to be. And that is definitely within the range of the man who played Benny Fazio. I think Junior has the potential to be a fundamentally unsympathetic character that viewers love to root for, anyway, like Sherrif Lamb on Veronica Mars, or Wilhelmina on Ugly Betty.

John Caroll Lynch as Big Enos Burdette - Chracter actor John Carroll Lynch usually gets stuck playing unscrupulous lackeys or street-level psychos (Carnivale, Zodiac) but I have a feeling he can step up to play the Kingpin-like Big Enos.

Peter Dinklage as Little Enos Burdette - Well, beat that, folks -- I cast an actual midget for the role! Dinklage made a name for himself by doing quirky roles in smaller indie films (The Baxter, Living in Oblivion, The Station Agent), but he's got some "geek cred" for his intense performance as a troubled, horny mathematician on the short-lived alien cover-up drama, Threshold. He brings the right mix of comedy and pathos to an otherwise secondary role.

The series would be Executive Produced by the Coen Brothers, Joel and Ethan (Fargo, The Big Lebowski), with the brothers directing the first episodes and finales of each season, giving the series a 'must-see' feel.

Some great choices Compound the only choice I didn't like was Stephen Dorff as bandit. He doesn't have the same Burt Reynolds cockiness that made Bandit great.

But again besides that nice job. I especially like your choice of Alan Tudyk as Cledus 'Snowman' Snow.

See, I picked Dorff primarily because he's got an ability to play chracters like slacker-turned-reluctant-media-darling Cliff Spab in the mid-90s cult hit SFW, as well as the eponymous character in Cecil B. DeMented. Both those characters are people who aren't likely to change the world, or influence people outside their immediate social circle. Neverthless, they're so charismatic and convinced of their own superiority, they manage to win over the peers and supporters who really count. And that seemed to make him a good fit for the lead role.

It's still an excellent cast though. I daresay it's even better than your New Avengers one. Really hitting our stride these days aren't we?

I mixed up some of Tudyk's roles with those of Troy Garity, whom I had also been considering for the role of Snowman.

Knight's Tale was indeed the ensemble film that I had in mind, when I casted Tudyk. I'll edit my entry to acknowledge this.

I'll have you know I've been Wizard Worlding my *** off all weekend. I couldn't be bothered with some Dreamcasting.

But I'll have you know that I just finished my casting like an hour ago. I'm just doing the picture thing now (which I will more than likely abandon). I'm just typing up my reasons for casting as well....

Bandit – Nathan Fillion – Does our mancrush for Fillion here at the UC know no bound? Is there a dreamcasting round that he isn’t in? Yowzahs! Either way, after seeing a few episodes of FOX’s short-lived “Drive”, I am convinced that Fillion’s smooth southern accent and debonair badboy charm fully embodied the Bandit.

Snowman – Nicholas Brendon – The perennial sidekick, Brendon’s character would be more of an experienced protégé rather than partner-in-crime. But at the same time, he wouldn’t be no green rookie. Brendon brings the comic relief and innocent charm to counteract Fillion’s brashness.

Frog – Amy Acker – Ok…see now here’s the thing…Acker played Fillion’s romantic interest in FOX’s “Drive”. But seeing as how my other choices were Ali Later channeling her earlier southern roles like “Varsity Blues” and “American Outlaws”…and Jamie Pressley basically being herself like she is on “My Name Is Earl”…you can see why I opted for Acker. Both Later and Pressley would’ve been acceptable---but both seem to be “too beautiful” for the role. Acker plays as great eye candy and has a down-home accessible yet tough charm to her. I mean it’s basically Acker playing Fred as Frog.

Sheriff Justice – Burt Reynolds – I’m all about the homages. It worked in “Longest Yard” and it’ll work here. Just the thought of getting to see Reynolds chew his scenes up with his trademark southern charm gives me the giddys. Yeah….Fillion is totally the Reynolds of this generation. So I think it’ll be fun to see Reynolds play against his old role.

Junior Justice – Michael Muhney - I was going for intimidating mook at first. And that train of thought led me to FX’s Walter Coggins. Best known as Shane Vandrell on “The Shield”….but then I thought that there needs to be a comedic presence to go against Reynolds instead of it always being against Fillion. And then I saw Compound’s “Veronica Mars” reference---and I’m all about giving the cast of VM work. And at one point I thought about Ken Marino (VM’s Vinnie VanLowe) playing the role. But the more I thought about it---the more Compound’s Don Lamb made more sense. Normally I’m not one for stealing----but this time I had to.

Big Enos – Clancy Brown – Obviously Compound’s choice is an excellent choice. But seeing as how there’s no way that a property like “Smokey and the Bandit” could ever really be taken serious---I’m approaching my casting choices in a way that allows the cast to have fun. Every time I see Brown I see him in serious roles. Or semi-serious roles. But this accomplished actor has a comedic side that is rarely seen. And what better way to instantly show the comedic stylings of Brown other than to see him play opposite a midget? :lol:

Lil Enos – Martin Klebba – For comedic purposes only. To see him play line for line against the giant of a man, Clancy Brown would be a sight to see. Serving as Big Enos’ echo….Klebba has proven himself to have great comedic timing with past roles.




Keep in mind that the tone of the series is to be all about fun. And to capture that feel I’d throw fun-remake vet McG in the director’s chair. His flair for dramatic action angles and knack for helping choreograph entertaining car chase scenes ala FOX’s “Fastlane” makes him the perfect choice to helm this project.

But seeing as how there’s no way that a property like “Smokey and the Bandit” could ever really be taken serious---I’m approaching my casting choices in a way that allows the cast to have fun. Every time I see Brown I see him in serious roles. Or semi-serious roles. But this accomplished actor has a comedic side that is rarely seen.

I approve of this.

However I disagree about his comedic side being 'rarely seen'. Watch Spongebob Squarepants.

I can't. I'm currently into "Foster's Home For Imaginary Friends" right now and can only be enamored with one child cartoon at a time.

Plus nothing on Spongebob will ever top the "How To Blow A Bubble" skit. BRING IT AROOOOOOOOOOUUUUUUUUND TOWN! :lol:

Clancy Brown is THE reason to watch Spongebob, and NOT Tom Kenny.
