Fan Films and Amature film making

I don't understand why guys like that spend their time on fan films. They should make something they own and can distribute, instead of giving free advertising work for huge companies.
Because they can.

No, really.

Because they choose not to, and because they do it for the love of it.

And that's their prerogative.

I really have a lot more to say about this --- like how amateur media making is a form of cognitive surplus being realized (see Clay Shirky) or how non-profit derivative works contributes to the vitality of culture (see Lawrence Lessig) --- but there are more ways to lack at culture than in terms of ownership/property and profit/control.

It amazes me that a few guys and a limited budget can make something like that, and the higher budgeted Mortal Kombat Rebirth, while the big film companies spin their wheels and churn out "safe" movies that generally bomb.
