Good lord, how could anyone stop watching right after that episode?! "Numbers" is probably the second-biggest turning point in the series(opening the hatch is of course #1)!

The numbers bit was coincidental. I don't think it was any kind of turning point... It was just another way of introducing Hurley into a more important role... Even though, since they have admitted they have no solution for the numbers bit, they are pretty much writing that to hell. For nothing.
