This is the chronological timeline except that games that include spoilers for other games are placed in their chronological release. Like, for example, Resident Evil 0 contains a spoiler for Resident Evil 1, so I'm including it later, even if it takes place before 1. I'll also provide additional explanation and notes for each game below.

Resident Evil (2002 Remake):
The original Resident Evil was released in 1996. This is its remake, released in 2002. I'm including the remake because Umbrella Chronicles shows the events of the remake as canon, and overall the remake includes everything the original had and more, so , it's the most complete version anyway. By the way, both the original and the remake let you choose to play as Chris or Jill, but their stories are contradictory to each other and later games refer to both stories as canon, so the canon events of the first game are a mix between the 2 stories, even if it is impossible to replicate them in the game. I suggest playing both stories. I don't have any recommendations on which one you should play first.
Resident Evil 2 (Original) / Resident Evil 2 (Remake):
OK, here comes the tricky part, September 1998, Resident Evil 2 takes place after Resident Evil 1 (as the title says). Remember the last game had two characters with different events, this one too. But in this game there is an addition. There are two characters: Leon and Claire. At the start of the game they split up, each choosing a different path. If you choose Leon you have one path and after you finish it you can play Claire on the other path BUT if you choose Claire first you can play Claire on the first path not the second and Leon on the second. So, there are like 2 "universes", each with one character in the first path and the other in the second, the first path is usually called A and the other B, so there are 4 paths: Leon A, Claire A, Leon B and Claire B, with Claire A and Leon B being one universe and Leon A and Claire B being the other one. This is simplified in the Remake (I think I haven't played the original 2 yet) so in the remake if you play just Leon A/Claire B or Claire A/Leon B you don't miss anything, you don't need to play the other "universe" if you're only there for the plot (unless you want to 100% of the game) since I think the original had scenes that only happened in each of the "universes" but in this one there are differences between Leon and Claire and A and B, but there's nothing unique to, say, Claire A that isn't present in Claire B or Leon A (am I making it more confusing?). Both the original and the remake have an unlockable extra mode called "The Fourth Survivor" where you play as an extra character, which lasts about 10 minutes. There are more additional modes in the remake that are not canon, they are like "What If" Marvel stories that show what would happen if the stories had a slightly different turn. There is also another additional mode in both versions of the game that is unlocked after finishing "The 4th Survivor" that is an alternate version but not canon for reasons that will become clear once you play it.
Resident Evil 0: This game was released after Code Veronica and around the same time of the Remake of 1. It is a prequel of 1 but I would recommend playing after Remake since it spoils one twist of 1/Remake. It also contains a character of 2, so I included it after 2 so you can know him.
Resident Evil 3 / Resident Evil 3 (Remake):
This game actually starts before 2 and ends after 2 but I would recommend playing it after 2.
Resident Evil Gun Survivor:
First Resident Evil spin-off and first game to occur after September 1998 in 2 and 3
Resident Evil Code Veronica X:
Resident Evil Code Veronica X is an updated release of Code Veronica for the Dreamcast. The release only adds a couple of cutscenes, so, you could play the original, though, obviously unless you found a used copy, you can't buy it in 2022. This is the only "main" game that is not in Steam, sadly. Code Veronica X was available in PS2. It was re-released in PS3 and Xbox360 and the XBox360 is also available for XBOX One via backwards compatibility. It is also available for PS4 and I don't know if also for Xbox One without the backwards compatibility. There are 2 version available for PS4: The version you can buy, that is exactly the same as the PS2 version and the version in PS Plus Premium or whatever that is the PS3 version. Careful if you live in PAL regions, since the PS2 version has the typical problem of old games that run at 5/6 the speed of NTSC versions, and the PS4 version is the same as the one released in the respective territories, so if you buy the game in the UK store for example, it would be the slower version, but, thankfully, the PS3 version and PSPlus version have the american speed in all territories and you can buy the American PS2 version if you buy the game in the American ps store with another account and you can even install the game and switch to your main account so you can actually earn trophies an all of those things there. As I mentioned, I don't know how it works in Xbox consoles since I don't own one, so if anyone wants to add something you can reply this message with the explanation.
Resident Evil Gun Survivor 2: Code Veronica:
OK, so, this one is a retelling of Code Veronica but in the gameplay of Gun Survivor. It really doesn't add anything to the plot and while technically canon is as important as if it wasn't since the final twist of the game is that it was all a nightmare that Claire has at the ending of Code Veronica
Resident Evil The Darkside Chronicles:
This game follows the formula of Umbrella Chronicles even if it is a prequel. It is more like a prequel of Resident Evil 4 and sequel to Code Veronica. Even if this game and Umbrella Chronicles were released after 4 I would recommend playing them before it. This game (and Umbrella Chronicles) have the same structure: the main plot happens in the position that I have post here but the bulk of the game are flashbacks of the main character to the events of 0, 1 (Remake) and 3 in Umbrella Chronicles and 2 and Code Veronica in Darkside Chronicles. There are both chapters that retell the events of the original games and chapters that reveal totally new events between those of previous games.
Resident Evil Dead Aim:
I have not played it, so I will add information in the future.
Resident Evil The Umbrella Chronicles:
Everything that needed to be said is already covered in the Darkside Chronicles part.
Resident Evil 4:
It has an extra chapter called "Separate Ways" included in the game in all versions except the original GameCube version. The Steam version is titled "Ultimate HD Edition" even though that edition is not the most "Ultimate" as the PS4 and Xbox one versions, the VR version and the Remake coming next year are more recent. Even so, it is the most HD version since you can install mods, including the "Resident Evil 4 HD Project" which I recommend since it fixes little things like textures that were missing in the process of porting from one console to another. Seriously, it looks so much better with the mod.
Resident Evil Revelations:
Released between 5 and 6, I would recommend playing it before 5
Resident Evil 5 Gold:
The Gold release includes the main game and the DLC "Untold Stories" that in turn includes "Lost in Nightmares" and "Desperate Scape". Desperate Escape happens at the same time as the final levels, so I would play it after them. Lost in Nightmares is a strange case. It happens 2 years before the events of the main game and I would recommend playing it before but the thing is... you can't. Even if you already bought the DLC, you need to unlock it playing the main game until the part the main character has flashbacks to the events in cutscenes and then after finishing that chapter you unlock the extra episode. But I think that narratively speaking, not only playing it before wouldn't damage the plot, It actually would make more sense if the extra chapter was the prologue! But anyways...
Resident Evil Revelations 2:
Released after 6 but acting as a prequel of 6, It is not really much connected with 6 or even Revelations 1, to be honest, but still a OK game. It has 2 sets of levels: The Claire and Moira episodes and the Barry and Natalia episodes that happen 6 months later (It that supposed to be an spoiler? By the way the game presents the "6 months later" tag, it would seem so, even if is not so interesting)
Resident Evil 6:
Just play Ada story last
Resident Evil Umbrella Corps:
I can't recommend this game. It is a 3rd person shooter that takes place in the Resident Evil universe and it is multiplayer oriented, that is why its single player mode sucks. It just feels so boring. Technically is canon, but is events hasn't been referenced so far.
Resident Evil 7 Gold Edition:
It has multiple DLCs that happen before and after the game, but since it is your first time I would just play the main game and then play the DLC. By the way the "Resident Evil 7 Teaser: Beginning Hour" has an actually diferent tiny plot that happens before the main game and since it is free and short we could actually spend more time debating if it is canon that you would spend playing it so, play it before the main game. The PS VR exclusive " KITCHEN " demo has a plot that is actually happening before to the other demo, so if you have a PSVR set you can also play that one before the other demo.
Resident Evil Village:
Like 7 it has a PlayStation demo that has a tiny plot before the events of the game but this time instead of being VR exclusive it is PS5 exclusive. Shadows of Rose is set 16 years after main game

Story Chronology Simplified Playing/Viewing/Reading Order
Since you already played 1 so you know the spoiler at the end, and you finished the other games, so you can play the Resident Evil 5 extra plots at their chronological placement.

Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City

Note 1
: Both Resident Evil Gaiden and Resident Evil Operation Raccoon City follow the main plot until their plots diverge, so I have included in Italics the games that should occur in their timelines if we suppose that they are exactly like the main timeline until the point of divergence but were released later. Also the game Umbrella Chronicles features characters remembering things that happened earlier, so, I have included the flashbacks but not the main game, even if the events when the characters remember them would not happen here. Also I included some Outbreak chapters because since the characters are in diferentes parts of the city, even if the point of divergence has happened earlier, it would not be unreasonable to assume that they happened like in the main timeline.

Timeline 4 (Earth-30847 of the Marvel Multiverse)
The Punisher
 X-Men: Children of the Atom
 X-Men: Mutant Apocalypse
 Marvel Super Heroes
Marvel Super Heroes: War of the Gems
 X-Men vs. Street Fighter
Marvel Super Heroes vs. Street Fighter

Marvel vs. Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes
Marvel vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds / Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Spider-Verse #2
Marvel vs. Capcom: Infinite

Note 2:
This Earth is weird. The various games can't decide if the Marvel and Capcom worlds are the same or two paralel worlds that merge temporarily. Aditionaly, like the Street Fighter games, the Arcade modes have one ending for every character, with the heroes winning the tournament or whatever and the villains usually take over the world in their endings, so obviously there are contradicting endings. Also some version of the Capcom represented games happens in the universe, but the timeline is a mess. Also Spider-Man of this world was killed by Morlun in Spider-Verse but he got better by the events of MvC 4

There is lots of info added in the last 2 months (should I post a reply every time I made a significant change to the timeline? Or is it annoying to see the same person replying to themselves in the "latest post" section everyday?)

I know it is my timeline but the "latest post" is in the bottom of the site in every page, that what I was talking about
Yeah ik. I meant if you wanna keep updating and letting people know you made changes you can or don’t up to you

Someone knows why when I add a link to the Steam page of the game, the colour of the font changes to blue (blue with underline, you know, like links usually are shown) and if I try to correct the colour sometimes it changes to the correct one and sometimes not?

Edit: I discovered how to fix it

First I put the timeline of the wiki page, and now I am in the process of playing the games. I have already finished 1 Remake, 2 Remake, 3 Remake, 5, 7 (Plus DLCs), Village, Revelations and Revelations 2. I have already bought but haven't finished yet Code Veronica X, 4, Umbrella Corps, the DLC for Village that was released yesterday and the Degeneration movie. I plan of buying the original 2 and 3, Darkside Chronicles and the other 2 animated movies and play Umbrella Chronicles and original 1 in PSplus

I played both, but like I said in the first message of the thread, if you only play Leon A+Claire B or Claire A+Leon B you don't miss anything.
But I think in the original they were more differences between the 2.

Mr Jocaza hi again, I can help you with a lot of the missing dates, I found out an extreme detailed RE timeline (for now it misses RE8) but I think it will be a HUGE help, I will link it to you, good luck.

To be honest I am not going to use it because I wanted to do the timeline myself, like, I knew about that timeline existence before I started to do the thread but, I just want to check it myself. I have use the timeline in Resident Evil Wiki as a placeholder, but, I am personally playing all the games to "confirm" their placement in the timeline.
