Tim Story (Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer) is set to direct the big screen adaptation of DC-Vertigo's gritty comic book The Losers for Warner Bros. Jamie Vanderbilt will adapt Andy Diggle's comic, working from a first draft by Peter Berg.

Berg and Weed Road's Akiva Goldsman and Kerry Foster are producing. Also producing is Sarah Aubrey, Berg's partner at Film 44, and John Cameron, who brought the project to Film 44.

The movie will center around a small band of elite and highly trained commandos who are set up to to be killed by their own government. They set out to avenge the wrong, as well as avenge other injustices.

The Losers was published by DC Comics in the 1970s and was revised several years ago by Vertigo Comics.

Story's feature adaptation will be set in contemporary times, with the special ops team carrying out missions around the world before the members are left for dead. Flying under the radar, they return and move around the U.S.

At this pace, they're going to run out of comics to adapt. Seriously, why can't most of these properties just stay as comics? This just shows how the movie industry is running out of ideas and forced to resort to adapting comics and making remakes.

I've read the first arc though. It was good.

True but think when all good comics are gone and they do more of really great mangas

To be fair, anybody who has read the "down-to-earth" Vertigo revival knows that it was practically BEGGING to be adapted into a high-budget live-action film.

The original 70s series was basically G.I. Joe vs. Dinosaurs and Scientific Experiments Gone Haywire, which is probably better suited to the four-color treatment and one's imagination.

However, the Diggle/Jock version was a tightly-written conspiracy/revenge/mystery book featuring high-octance escape/chase sequences, mixed with a critique of the alliances between intelligence agencies, big corporations, and Third World despots. It was extremely timely, and very cinema-friendly. Think The A-Team meets Syriana.

In fact, I think i'll post my Dream Cast here, once I have a little more free time.

No, the Hulk movie is in 2008.
