Ultimate X-men #89 (Spoilers!)

So, we finally have the conclusion to the Shadow King subplot.

I'm not sure what to think. Part of me is underwhelmed since it was wrapped up in one issue. One little fight and bam? No more Shadow King? Seems kind of ridiculous, especially since it wasn't Xavier, Jean/Phoenix or even Psylocke fighting him.

However, I kind of like that it was wrapped up in one issue. It's a throwback to the Silver Age way of storytelling. Tell a complete story in one or two issues. His backstory is also neat, since it ties into Storm and Lady Deathstrike's. Also, I really liked how the Brood was utilized. Really clever way to keep them alien without actually making them extraterrestrial.

I guess with Apocalypse, Sinister, Onslaught, and Stryfe all on the horizon, Shadow King had to be pushed to the background. Which is disappointing because Shadow King could have easily carried an arc as the villain. Still, I'm beginning to wonder why Kirkman feels it's necessary to throw every X villain into the title within a short amount of time, especially when he's only utilizing some heavy hitters, like Shadow King, for a one-off.

I'd say 2.5/5. A good standalone issue, if a bit disappointing to see the end of Shadow King so quickly.

People always say that, yet most don't even know (or forget) that it was Storm who first encountered Shadow King before anyone. So having SK's first appearance here deal with Storm first is a great nod.

True. I'm fine with him being tied to Storm's backstory and all. I just find it kind of underwhelming that a mutant psychic as powerful as the Shadow King was beaten at his own game by someone who has no psychic powers whatsoever.

Well, I haven't read the issue yet, so I can't really comment on that. But hey, it's possible (in the 'general' sense).

I'll see tomorrow.

Well, you're saying "as powerful as the Shadow King" like this is the 616 universe. Unfortunately, we can't say that...

I suppose so. But, from what he was able to unleash, he still seemed pretty damn powerful.

Plus, he was basically defeated because Storm hurt his feelings.

Okay, just read this.

I can see how it could look like Shadow King was defeated because Storm hurt his feelings. But he was also hit with a very powerful controlled lightning from Storm, and I'd argue that plays into his departure.

I thought the issue was good, though. I liked it very much. Although I wish we could've seen (maybe in the future?) the others reaction to Hank's return.

Possibly. But, wasn't that just in her mind? Or did he physically manifest? Because, by the way the rest of the team was talking at the end of the issue, she basically was just in a coma for a few days.

I would say Shadow King had her in the plane. But either way, he had such a strong connection with Storm that he felt the pain from the bolt.

I don't see why people are giving his early departure so much flack. He can always be back as a greater threat.

thee great one

Master of TOG-fu.
He will be back as long as Loeb doesn't destroy this title.

Shadow King was actually very brilliant and him being in control of the Brood.

I also do like how Wolverine doesn't want anything to do with Storm, until Beast comes back. I think he only wants what he can't have.

I was disappointed there was no Apocalypse.
