What's your origin story that got you hooked on comics? Mine's Zagor, a long time ago and I have 0 regrets about it.

I can't be certain about the very first comic I read but, here's my "origin" story:

My dad repaired large commercial printing presses for a living and would travel to customer locations daily. A couple of his customers would occasionally give him milk crates filled with old comics which he'd bring home to me. This would have been around 1971/1972. Early memories include reading old copies of Captain Marvel and Plastic Man - this is the only surviving issue from that period:

Sadly, my mother threw all those comics away once I started buying new comics off the newsstand in 1974, when I started school. Had to make room for the new books coming in, she said. The first comic I bought off the newsstand on my own was Human Torch #1 around 1974:

From there I was heavy into DC; their 100-Page Giants and later $1.00 comics gave a lot of bang for the buck so I was hooked.

I also got into Marvel Team-Up, the Incredible Hulk, the Micronauts, and the X-Men and kept buying/reading comics until 1982, finally giving into my sisters' persistent nagging that comics were for kids and that I should stop now that I was going into high school. Admittedly, discovering girls also helped. I went cold turkey until 1985 when a school acquaintance was telling me about this great new comic he was reading: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I wasn't sold on this concept so he brought me to a comic shop nearby school and TMNT #3 was on the shelf. I bought it, followed by a second printing of #2 and a third printing of #1.

I was hooked from there. I got back into comics just in time for the black & white explosion, the surge of independent comics, and the advent of titles like Watchmen, the Dark Knight Returns, and Crisis on Infinite Earths. I fell in love with indies like Nexus, Scout, Jon Sable, Freelance, American Flagg and so many more.

I keep up on some modern stuff (like Thor), but I'm mainly into old comics these days, picking up Golden, Silver, Bronze, and Copper age issues as they present themselves. Old Dell Comics are a particular kick I'm on right now. I also enjoy picking up hardcover collection of old material, like Fantagraphics' Atlas Comics Comics Library editions, Taschen Marvel Comics Library editions, and the like. As of now, the collection has more than 34,000 comics and counting.
