Posters that sum up an actor's career

Brilliant because it's true.

Will Smith is Typical Black Cop

See....here's the thing with Will Smith---he's not the typical black cop.

His roles ae just him. For example---"I, Robot". It's not Will Smith as Detective Johhny Law. It's "if Will Smith was in the future and he didn't trust robots and had to investigate the murder of a robot creator...this is how he'd be."

In the case of "Independence Day" it's "if Will Smith was a Marine fighter pilot and Earth was invaded by aliens....this is how Will Smith would be".

MIB? "If Will Smith was recruited by a secret govt agency to police and monitor aliens on Earth....this is how Will Smith would be."

So really...its "Coming this summer......Will Smith stars in his biggest role yet. It's Will Smith as.......Will Smith!"

***For the record, I like Will Smith. I think he's grown more as an actor within the past 5 years. His role as Ali was beautiful. And his role in "Pursuit of Happiness" is so great that it's garnered him an Oscar nomination for Best Actor.

This is exactly how I feel about Harrison Ford.

Except Will Smith actually has more charisma than Ford, shamed as I am to admit that.

Yep. It's a shame. But it's the truth. There aren't vary many actors that can make you look past the famous name/celebrity and make you actually think they are who they're playing.

The last person I can think of who makes me forget it's actually him is Paul Giamatti.

For me the actor who makes me look past the name and think of him as the character not the actor in every film he's in is my favourite actor of all time

Leonardo DiCaprio

(and no I'm not gay just honest)

Personally, if I was a child star from a franchise like Harry Potter, I'd save all the money I was making from acting, and then when the series was done, I'd never even try to act again.
Yep but if something happened and you lost that fortune your out of luck, and after so many years out of the game and being the typical type cast

Are you kidding? He might be a pretty good actor....but no matter what he's in all I see is Leo.

With the exception of a few lines around the eyes....he looks the same as he did damn near 10 years ago.

I think he might have that disease Webster and Gary Coleman have.

He may look the same BUT I talking acting wise he makes me see him only as character. I see him as leo in interviews but in films I just see character. Might not be the same for you but that's how it is for me

There was a time when I felt pretty much the same as you about Leo, but over the last few years, he's done some really impressive work that has changed my mind. Catch Me if you Can, The Aviator, Gangs of New York, and especially The Departed and Blood Diamond are the main examples. In his roles in each of those films, he was solid and made the characters work.

Especially The Departed. That movie was 100% solid as a rock from start to finish. I think it's a crime that Nicholson didn't get his Oscar nod, but then again, the Oscars are usually a pile of crap.

In no way do I hate Leo. I'm actually a fan. All the films you've listed above are great films and he did a fantastic job in them (especially Catch Me If You Can, The Departed and Blood Diamond).

But regardless of how much I buy into the character---it's still Leo up there.

This is exactly how I feel about Harrison Ford.

Except Han Solo and Indiana Jones. They both were bigger than Harrison Ford. Everything else, though, is definitely "What if Harrison Ford were this?"

I think part of that has to do with the excess of celebrity coverage in our modern times.

To me, whoever the actor is and what his behavior is off-screen is irrelevant to the role on screen. As such, it helps that I don't actually have a working cable set right now.

I'm not saying that to sound self superior or anything like that, just that lacking any real mainstream media consumption except the daily newspaper and the big screen theaters kind of immunizes me from that effect without me even trying to "resist" it.

A conversation I had with compound over YM somewhat communicates my views on this:

Paolo Cruz (5/21/2008 7:37:20 AM): Seeing MEW in this clip exponentially increased her appeal, in my eyes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TnHmNlxF51g

Matthew Arcilla (5/21/2008 7:37:39 AM): Who is mew?

Paolo Cruz (5/21/2008 7:37:51 AM): Mary Elizabeth Winstead

Matthew Arcilla (5/21/2008 7:38:44 AM): What made you dislike her so much at first?

Paolo Cruz (5/21/2008 7:39:12 AM): How FHM/Maxim friendly her celeb persona is, basically, in a way that, say, Jena Malone, or Ellen Page, or Zooey Deschanel aren't, despite being conventionally attractive.

Matthew Arcilla (5/21/2008 7:40:50 AM): Stop reading up on them. I think people should really stop reading such magazines at this point, as they are gradually becoming an annoying influence in discussing actors. I mean its not like Maxim/FHM friendliness (which i too find annoying) is actually RELEVANT to how they do their jobs.

Paolo Cruz (5/21/2008 7:42:15 AM): Fair enough.

Matthew Arcilla (5/21/2008 7:42:26 AM): I think it's similar to how people's private lives have nothing to do with their public 'responsibilities' (see also children's entertainer Pee Wee Herman, who masturbates in theaters and Joseph Estrada, womanizing inebriate actor turned President)

Paolo Cruz (5/21/2008 7:42:38 AM):I just don't like the idea of a person appealing to that mindset, and it gets offputting.

Matthew Arcilla (5/21/2008 7:43:06 AM): Explain to me then how Kristen Bell manages to 'transcend' her willingness to cocktease in such feature articles. Like, I'm hot and will show myself in a bikini and make cutely comical yet sexy faces as i play wif my dog, hold a lollipop, press my boobies together with an orange bow...but wow im like not a slut! Take that Lindsay!

Paolo Cruz (5/21/2008 7:43:43 AM): Interesting point.
