I'm really surprised that given the interest in 28 Weeks Later, none of us who live outside of the United States has brought up Sunshine.

I am a big fan of the idea of mixing science fiction with suspense/horror, so I had been really looking forward to it when I saw it on opening night. Anyone who has liked Event Horizon would probably like it.

Interestingly, there're elements about the first 3/4 of the movie that made me think, "This is how Fantastic Four should be done". Or at least the creepily tense Grant Morrison incarnation of the Four in FF: 1234.

They make a big deal about how the human condition fundamentally changes in outer space, and I thought that was an apt way of looking at the post-human condition of the Fantastic Four.

Moreso if you think about the fact that the film hints towards a reverse-Nietzschean idea. Where instead of "gazing into the abyss makes the abyss gaze into you", we get "stare too long into the sun and the sun stares back, burning into your humanity."

I know Bass has been particularly attentive about Sunshine, otherwise he wouldn't have made fun of the line, "If the sun dies, we all die." business. Anyway, this showed in the Philippines (and the UK) last month and I was wondering if anyone else has seen out and what their thoughts are.

Yeah i caught it, ill give u a very basic review though. I enjoyed it. I really dig space movies and i always find astronauts really funny moving dead slow through space and panicking makes me laugh  ??. there was just one thing in this movie that ruined it for me but otherwise it was pretty enjoyable and chris evans was the ****ing man!

Where we're going, we won't need eyes!

God did I love Even Horizon. I even plan to name my second son Benjamin to keep the movies continuity alive. *

Do we have word on the US release of Sunshine? I've been hearing bits and pieces about it for a while and I'm deffinatly intrigued.

*The initial navigator of the Event Horizon was Ben Pfender. I am a Pfender.

Out September in the United Provinces of Yanqui.

I cannot fathom why they are releasing it so late there.

Supposedly it was bumped off March/April because of Oscar season, but that's ridiculous.

Oh well I live in the Philippines, thankfully, where we get British films on British release dates, American blockbusters two days ahead and all the Asian films months before the rest of the Anglophonic world.

And the only price is crushing poverty and female prime ministers.

The Host never did open near me...

I have just watched this movie.

I actually feel the need to resurrect this thread to decry how absolutely godawful this movie was. My God, that was two hours of my life that I am never going to get back.

I thought it was directed beautifully, and was nicely atmospheric, but nothing made any sense! The entire plot is a plot hole in itself, the cast is 'stereotypical sci-fi cast v.2', and the mad murderer thrown in at the end was a huge WTF? moment in the worst possible way.

Also, did anyone notice how they killed off every ethnic minority or asian character, with the only 3 white characters surviving longest?

Fluff, disguised as a highbrow thriller. Mostly nonsense.

I agree. It was an exercise in direction, cinematography and even writing that came together to make nothing. It was like the individual people responsible for this film did their best work, but they teamed up to form nonsense.

Also, I've always liked any piece of pop culture that tackles the idea that exploration or discovery fundamentally alters the psychology of the person encountering these new experiences, even if it was pretty damn vaguely handled in this film.

I wouldn't call the cast 'stereotypical sci-fi v.2' though, but I wouldn't call them terribly inventive either. The problem was that the writing team was zigging and zagging about with what they wanted to do with these characters.

I could probably talk about this film for paragraphs on end, but that's because I find that any film that is flawed in any noteworthy fashion is fundamentally more remarkable than a blandly excellent one.
