Billy Batson and the Power of Shazam

Re: Shazam!

Agreed. If it's too goofy and won't reach the target audience, it's easy to change up to be darker, but I think it's perfect the way it is.

Well, goofy or not, it's an accurate retelling of his origin.

The problem with *most* Captain Marvel fans, they don't want serious stories. Most fans of the characters want the saccharine sweet, goofy innocence of the original Fawcett stories.

Honestly, had Winnick not screwed the pooch by immobilizing the true heir (Mary), and promoted his other Mancrush Freddie, ToS could have been a good book. I'm looking forward to Mary's role in Countdown, and maybe...just maybe a good and serious Shazam book and movie.

Re: Shazam!

Prime is the Vertigo version of Captain Marvel. But was published by Malibu Comics.

Re: Shazam!

. . .the Rock? Are you serious?

Now, don't get me wrong. I like the Rock. His acting has gotten much better then when he started (Scorpion King). But I can't see him playing Captain Marvel. At all.

My friend told me last night that The Rock was cast as Captain America. Needless to say, I was pretty bummed at this, seeing as how Cap's blond hair is pretty defining. Anyway, a quick IMDb search showed me the light. Rock's 'in talks' for Captain MARVEL for a supposed 2008 release (which we all know, won't happen).

What do I think?

Why not, I suppose? The Rock's actually quite a decent actor (anyone see 'Gridiron Gang'?) and he's the physical epitome of what Captain Marvel should be. I don't mind having young, athletic types playing Superman (in fact, I prefer it because it makes Clark Kent more plausible if his physique is just above normal), but Captain Marvel should be the epitome of a handsome, muscular, tough-guy adult, and that's essentially what the Rock is. Obviously, his ethnicity might be a bit of a problem for some fans, but I don't mind.

The other guy supposedly in the running is an unknown (well, I don't recognise him or any of the stuff on his resumé, anyway) called Brandon Molale. He looks all right and definitely more 'all-american' than The Rock, but quite frankly, I think he's a bit ugly for the part.

It's been said before. The Rock should only play Black Adam. It makes much more sense than Captain Marvel.

Whatever, I'll take your word for it. I really don't know much about the Cap, other than the basics (Little Boy + SHAZAM! = Big Red Cheese). I have no idea about Mary Marvel or Black Adam or any of those other jokers.

Let me just tell you that Black Adam is the biggest badass to ever hit the DC Universe. I would like to see him in a JLA movie as a member of the Society but that won't happen so he belongs in SHAZAM.

CBR:

According to a video interview at MTV, the fans have spoken and they'd like Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson to play Black Adam in the big screen adaptation. The actor approves of the choice.

I like this casting.

The only problem I have is that Dwayne Johnson has been attached to play so many properties (Johnny Bravo, Spy Hunter) that seem to be stuck in pre-production hell that it makes me a little bit skeptical about whether or not this is going to get made any time soon.

CBR:

According to IESB, director Peter Segal revealed that the film will actually be called "Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam."

Re: Shazam!

It is. I think it was better off as just "Shazam!".

If it was just "Legend of Shazam" Okay. But the whole Billy Baston sounds stupid. What's with Hollywood and increasingly long titles?

Director Peter Segal is quoted at Sci-Fi Wire talking about development on the big screen adaptation. "I think it'll still happen," Segal said. "Though timing is going to be a key issue now, because ... normally we'd be working on a script while we're in post-production [on 'Get Smart'], so that hopefully when we're done with post-production, we're ready to go into preproduction [on the next project]. But now we're sort of out of sync, so, unfortunately, I'll have to spend more time with my family." Hopefully joking there, Segal continued, "You don't really want to rush something like 'Shazam.' I mean, it's going to be a huge movie. I mean, huge in scope and in price. And so you want to make sure you have a solid script and really pay attention to the casting and all the preproduction that goes into that. So, you know, I think when it's right, it'll be made."

Re: Billy Batson and the Legend of Shazam

I believe this is part of this movie (though CBR says it's "Billy Batson and the Power of Shazam"):

CBR:

Looking forward to seeing John August's version of the character go toe to toe with the Rock as Black Adam? Well, forget about it, or so August said on his blog. He wrote, "By the time I got back, the project was dead. By 'dead,' I mean that it won't be happening. I don't think it's on the studio's radar at all. It may come back in another incarnation, with another writer, but I can say with considerable certainty that it won't be the version I developed." This is unusual given a fairly recent press release confirming Peter Segal would be directing August's script.
