So, as many of you may already know, the Writers Guild of America is on strike as of midnight last night. In a nutshell the union is at odds with the producers of television and Hollywood over a cut of the money being made off of dvd sales and internet downloading of content. As an actor in all three acting unions, i certainly understand the need to stand up for what you feel is right, as well as to have protection from being exploited. I applaud the WGA for not accepting being undervalued. That being said, I am, like most of you, an avid consumer of their entertainment and will miss it greatly. The last writer's strike was, I believe, in 1988, and lasted approximately 5 months. Good thing i just joined netflix.

Anway, we already know some of the repercussions of the strike. Heroes:Origins has been scrapped, and an alternate ending to the Dec 3 episode of the regular show will be shot wrapping all the plotlines up and putting an end to season 3 altogether (which was going to sort of happen anyway, just not as final.)

The most immediate effect will be the nightly programs such as The Daily Show and Late Night going immediately into reruns for the time being, slowly thereafter being followed in about a month by soap operas, and then pretty much all non-reality television. Hollywood has been stockpiling movie scripts for months now in anticipation, so 2008 will probably see a glut of really mediocre stuff, obviously aside from everything that's already been shot.

So, I guess we can gripe and discuss here, and post any strike-related stuff. There's speculation that the strike will cause many of the newer tv shows like Chuck, Bionic Woman, etc to just fold outright when their batch of new episodes run out, but there hasn't been much word yet about any of that.

Have at it.

Re: The strike is on

****ing studios not giving them updated rights, ****ing around with the industry, they might as well give in we all know they will.

Re: The strike is on

If you don't like you're job, you don't strike! You just go in there and do a really half-assed job! That's the American way!

I love Homer.

As about this - I'm ambivalent. On the one hand, HEROES wrapping up means more story in the remaining episodes and thus more goodness. On the other hand, they may rush it and kill a lot of the drama, or worse, get cancelled. Hurm.

Well, it's only the Dec 3 episode that's changing at all, so we'll probably have the regular pace until the last 10 minutes of that show, where they'll introduce the newest hero, Deus Ex Machina.

Re: The strike is on

I wish I could strike.

The last time I went on strike I spent 2 weeks in brig. I sat in a room all by myself and memorized half a deck of Trivial Pursuit cards.

I applaud the writers for standing up for their rights and not taking this abuse lying down. But as a consumer----I'm pissed. As usual they'll come to a compromise.

SNL had a really funny skit about this on Saturday. It summed up why they're striking pretty accrately. I'd search for it....but YouTube is blocked at work.

Stupid sexy firewall.

BKV talks extensively about the strike, his place in it, and the implications for the comics world:

I think they should do a reality tv show with writers on strike and see how it's going for them.

Waste not, want not.

And by that I mean, if you use waste for programming, I won't want it.

Re: The strike is on

I hate strikes, at least here they are an excuse to take some days off, hang out with friends and make parties. So pretty much I'm just pissed with this thing.

Re: The strike is on

I really only watch Heroes right now, and since they basically wrapping up Volume 2 anyway, it doesn't effect me all that much. In the spring, I watch Battlestar and was considering catching up on LOST, but I don't know how the strike is going to affect those two shows.

TV is, luckily, the least important medium of entertainment for me. Movies, Games (Both Video and Pen and Paper), Comics and Novels are all ahead on my give-a-****-o-meter, so yeah.

It'll suck to see Heroes end so early, and it'll suck if it effects Battlestar and LOST, but I'm not too worried about.

As for next years movies. . .the only ones I really cared to see anyway were Indiana Jones, Batman, Iron Man, Prince Caspian and Bond 22, which all, except possibly the later, are already in-production or post-production anyway.

I agree.

But I hope HIMYM doesn't get shafted.
