So, as many of you may already know, the Writers Guild of America is on strike as of midnight last night. In a nutshell the union is at odds with the producers of television and Hollywood over a cut of the money being made off of dvd sales and internet downloading of content. As an actor in all three acting unions, i certainly understand the need to stand up for what you feel is right, as well as to have protection from being exploited. I applaud the WGA for not accepting being undervalued. That being said, I am, like most of you, an avid consumer of their entertainment and will miss it greatly. The last writer's strike was, I believe, in 1988, and lasted approximately 5 months. Good thing i just joined netflix.
Anway, we already know some of the repercussions of the strike. Heroes:Origins has been scrapped, and an alternate ending to the Dec 3 episode of the regular show will be shot wrapping all the plotlines up and putting an end to season 3 altogether (which was going to sort of happen anyway, just not as final.)
The most immediate effect will be the nightly programs such as The Daily Show and Late Night going immediately into reruns for the time being, slowly thereafter being followed in about a month by soap operas, and then pretty much all non-reality television. Hollywood has been stockpiling movie scripts for months now in anticipation, so 2008 will probably see a glut of really mediocre stuff, obviously aside from everything that's already been shot.
So, I guess we can gripe and discuss here, and post any strike-related stuff. There's speculation that the strike will cause many of the newer tv shows like Chuck, Bionic Woman, etc to just fold outright when their batch of new episodes run out, but there hasn't been much word yet about any of that.
Have at it.
