This is the complete Indiana Jones timeline.

Now there are a lot of different Indy timelines floating around the net and even here on the boards, all very worthy efforts (and many helpful in me putting together this one). The one thing every other Indy timeline I came across was missing were all the great West End Games Role Playing Games Adventures. Considering how some of those tie into canonical events themselves ("The Search for Nurhachi" RPG adventure basically serves as a Prequel to Temple of Doom, or an interquel between Emperor's Tomb and ToD), I decided to begin researching and adding those in. I also wanted to add all the foreign Indy tales in (the German novels, the French comics, and the few UK only comic tales) since many ignored those tales as well.

For simplicity's sake, I didn't break up the flashbacks (like in Last Crusade's prologue), but instead include a notation in the date references to show there is a flashback (or flashforward in the case of Mystery of the Blues).

In terms of the different media forms:

The 4 Indy films are bolded and underlined.

The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones are bolded (and are now considered the canonical versions over the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles as far as this timeline goes).

The comics are italicized and in green text.

The video games are underlined and in red text, while the pen and paper RPG game adventures are in italicizes red text, and the board game is in regular red text.

The novels are italicized and in blue text.

The theme park ride/attraction is in underlined purple text.

Anything that's a foreign-only tale (the German novels, French novels and comics, or UK comics). They also feature the translated title first, and the original title second in parentheses.

In terms of whats considered canonical, this timeline is an attempt to include EVERYTHING that could be considered canonical. If you choose to ignore everything but the movies, thats cool. But if you consider everything canonical, this timeline helps organize the adventures chronologically. So basically, it allows people to pick and choose which adventures they want to include as canonical in their own personal Indy timelines. If you want to ignore certain adventures, this timeline allows that. If you want to include ALL of them, well, this allows that too. Its up to you.

And, I realize there are multiple viewpoints on when certain adventures take place (mostly concerning the original movies).

In terms of Raiders, I disagree with the generally held view that months pass over the course of the movie (particularly between the prologue scene in South America and Indy's return to the US and his teaching position at the university). Mainly this is due to the fact that Indy relates the tale of the Chachopoyan Idol to Marcus in his classroom for the first time. If months had passed, logic kind of implies Indy would've telegrammed Marcus to let him know. Days or weeks between those portions of the movie make more sense to me than months.

Also realize that some dates are assumed (if not specified in the story itself), based on several factors:

1.) Real world historical events that might be mentioned or taking place in the various stories.

2.) Certain Indy supporting characters appearing in adventures (for instance, Marion appearing in Revenge of the Ancients and the Further Adventures comic series place those soon after Raiders)

3.) And in the rare case neither of those apply, dates are arbitrarily ascribed based on the time/dates available for them to happen, etc.

So, let the timeline discussion begin!

Why did they choose to set the second movie before the events of the first movie?

Originally, the idea of Indiana Jones was to do it backwards. Last Crusade should have been first, but since Harrison Ford had noticeably aged between Temple and Crusade, they scrapped those plans.

I recall hearing that Temple of Doom is meant to be a prequel

Temple of Doom is a Prequel to Raiders. This was done mainly so they could focus on a different villain than Nazis, and also so they could show Indy as a "darker" character than in Raiders.

****ing right.

Silly question but does the colouring mean anything? I think Bold Black = tv and films , non-bold black = videogames thought I may be wrong

They do. The breakdown for what they represent is in the second post (the quoted part, where I quote myself from another site).

Ahhh, I looked at this thread a few times i missed that quote every damn time :oops: but I got some right woohooo!

I challenge you, Mole, to make a Star Wars timeline.

That'd be the longest timeline...ever (with all the expanded universe stuff like the novels and comics).

Not even I would attempt that. I know some people have...there's a website that has (apparently) the COMPLETE Star Wars saga. Its a very long timeline, suffice it to say.

There already is a star wars timeline for books with the movies inserted online so adding cartoons tv and games would be relatively simple. By that I mean more simple than you think a star wars timeline should

Actually there's already a timeline with EVERYTHING...the movies, the novels, the comics, the video games, even the Droids and Ewoks animated series.

Here it is...

Its insane, man.

No it didn't. It included them as the original movies they were. Its also why the countless novelizations of those movies aren't also each listed separately. Its a timeline, not a checklist. ;)

But what about things like the area you go from film to film in it? Clearly some point on the timeline you should have Indy been turned into lego and forced to relive his quests day after day. It seems important.

Bottom line is you suck at timelines unlike that goblin fellow, Where is he when you need him?. Sure his timelines were wrong but they showed real heart and at the end of the day isn't that what is truly important in life?
