Ripping DVDs

Does anyone actively rip DVDs? I've been experimenting with it and think I've found some good settings to use but had a few questions.

I'm decrypting DVDs using both DVD Decrypter (PC) and Mac the Ripper (Mac), then running the results through Handbrake. My main concerns are compatibility with iPhone/iPod, and Popcorn Hour.

The presets on the Mac version of Handbrake are different from PC. The preset I use on the Mac is called "Ipod Hi-res" and all I do is bump up the resolution to full resolution, and use 2-pass encoding. Makes for a decent sized file and good quality (I think it works out to 1500 kbps but my understanding is that the 2-pass encoding means it's better than actual 1500).

Here's an issue I'm having - when ripping DVDs of TV shows I turn on deinterlace, but on some shows the interlacing is still very noticable. Is there a way to fix this?

I haven't done it in a while but I used to use DVD Shrink, I think it was called. It did everything I needed to but now that I've got a Media Player, I'm thinking of getting one of those other programs that can convert a DVD into a .avi file.

My only problem with AVIs is that they aren't playable on the iPod. Which is too bad, because when you download movies most ofthem are in AVI format.

Have you tried some of those programs that can convert AVIs into iPod format files? I used one and it was pretty quick.

Actually I believe Quicktime can do it (or maybe it's that I have a Quicktime plugin that can do it). But I'd rather not have to convert an already converted file and have to lose quality. I'd rather do it "right" in the first place.

I figured it out. I had to turn on detelecine in Handbrake. The only DVD I've had to do that for is the Pearl Jam Unplugged DVD that came with the Ten reissue.

I came across another new problem - dummy VOBs. They put in these fake VOBs on the DVDs that video DVD players ignore but cause havok with ripping. Because, ya know - we wouldn't want people to be able to rip DVDs they paid for.

Mac the Ripper and DVD Decrypter couldn't handle discs with dummy VOBs but it looks like a program called RipIt4Me handles it - it works in conjunction with DVD Decrypter. What a pain. I haven't even tried re-encoding the rip yet, so who knows if this will even work.

I am the DVD ripping king.

400+ and going strong.

very nice! i still prefer mine in disk form but a sizable collection is still a sizable collection

I know what you mean. That's how I feel about music - I prefer a CD over a download, even though I never listen to the actual CDs.

Just like with an MP3 player, it's much more convenient to have hundreds of movies on a device that is smaller than a stack of DVDs than the DVDs themselves.

i have 2 600 disk towers that dont take up too much space, hipce i believe

how much space does 400 movies take up, at decent quality, 600 gb?

Geez, I don't think there's even 400 movies I would want to see, let alone take the time to rip copies of them

when i used red box (free movie every monday with a code) i would rent movie and rip as i cooked dinner. i would return it the next day and watch it at my convenience

A majority of them are kids movies. I have a 6 year old and a 3 year old.

I rip to 1800kbps in M4V format - a little higher quality than average but they look really good. Most movies come in around 1.2GB. It's hard to say how much space they all take up - I have them all on a 1TB drive with some AVIs I've downloaded (lower quality) and some hi-def MKVs. I have TV show rips on a separate drive. So, basically they are spread out between 2 1 TB drives with room to spare.

I do that all the time!
