I say this every time I start a new thread, but: I thought we already had a thread for this.

Apparently not though. Anyways, I bought the Quadrilogy for my birthday a couple weeks ago, so I have sort of a renewed interest in the subject.

Now, about the aliens themselves. I've gotten the impression that, while the aliens sort of alter the body chemistry of its host, they themselves sort of take on some characteristics of the host.... In the expanded universe, there are a variety of different castes in the alien species - dog aliens, gorilla aliens, scorpion aliens, white aliens, flying aliens, PredAliens, etc. So in like the first film, the alien bursts out of Kane's chest and eventually grows into a bipedal, humanoid.... I think that if the alien were to have, say, planted its seed inside of Jones the cat, the result would be a quadrupedal alien. I think such a thing happened to a dog in one of the movies, am I correct? So basically, the host's physiology influences that of parasite.

I own the trilogy. It was sitting side by side with the quadrilogy and they were practically the same price but I was just like, **** that. I don't want Resurrection in my collection.

I can't wait for Ridley Scott to direct the prequel.

So totally agree on all counts, but honestly, Resurrection was written by Whedon, so is it really all that surprising that it sucked.

There are rumors that Scott is looking to explore the Space Jockey species in the prequel.

Whedon hate FTW!

That would be interesting. If there was ever a place to explore the Space Jockeys, it would be in a prequel. I've always been curious to see the mythology of the franchise explored. I mean, I was greatly satisfied with the action bent to Aliens but I've wanted to see the things hinted at in the first movie explored more fully.

I'm not fan of the franchise however there I do enjoy Alien. (though the book is even better IMO) The reason is alien you don't really know what the alien is. It's stalking them. It's actually pretty cool to watch as it does do the horror well. Then Aliens the tone and everything switched. I could never get with the jump in films from horror to action.

Yeah, even though ALIENS is great, I still think ALIEN is its own film.

Bishop is an awesome character though. The knife part in ALIENS is kickass. Plus, if there was no ALIENS, we'd have never gotten to see the Queen (who I think is completely badass), and therefore never have gotten to see the iconic fight between her and Ripley. I dunno, I guess since ALIEN and ALIENS are such different movies, it's hard to compare them. I'd say they're almost equal. James Cameron knows how to make sequels.

Going by that if we never got Aliens we'd have never gotten to see the Queen and if never got the queen we wouldn't have had AVP which alot hate (i like though) :p

The Queen is so badass. I want to have her babies.

The Queen is like a pimp and the worker drones are like....well, they're like her prostitutes really.

Has anybody noticed the similarities between Aliens and T2? It seems like James Cameron put some homages to Aliens in T2.

There's a scene in Aliens where the Marines are trying to get away in the tank vehicle while the aliens are chasing them, and one of the drones sticks its paws inside the vehicle as the doors shut. Michael Biehn takes a shotgun and sticks it in the alien's mouth, and then shoots its face. In T2, when John, Sarah, and the T-800 are in the elevator of the mental hospital, the T-1000 sticks its blades inside the elevator door before it can close. As it opens the doors with the blades, the T-800 shoots it in the face with his shotgun. Watch the two scenes back-to-back and you'll realize what I'm talking about.

In Aliens, Newt says "ah-firmative." In T2, John Connor says "ah-firmative."

In T2, Sarah Connor becomes completely badass. She's a completely different character from the first movie. While Ripley was still pretty badass in the first Alien, it was the events of Alien that transformed her into the completely badass character that she is in Aliens. Aliens is really the first film in the series to show this.

There were a lot of other similarities I found while watching both movies, but I can't remember all of them right now.

I didn't know this thread existed.

I am also now watching Terminator 2. I am inside Langsta's mind.

You see the similarities between Aliens and T2 then? It's also funny that Alien and Terminator were more "horror" and their sequels were action movies.

So, fun fact.

Bill Paxton is the only actor to be killed by an Alien, a Predator, and a Terminator.

Yes. All of Bass' ramblings in the Terminator Salvation thread make sense now.

See, when someone asked me the question, my first thought was Lance. But, which Terminator movie was he in?

He was the detective in the first one. I think every police officer died.

He was in the first Terminator movie. He was a cop in the "I'll be back" massacre that got killed.

For my final in English I have to do a research paper and the topic I chose was "the psycho-sexual metaphors in Alien." But I'm having trouble developing a thesis statement. For example, I could do something like ... "The psycho-sexual metaphors in Ridley Scott's Alien helped shape the slasher genre for the ages," or something. Any ideas?

Also, regarding the prequel:

Former commercial director Carl Rinsch had originally signed on in May 2009 to direct a prequel film to Alien. Ridley Scott and Tony Scott had decided to function only as producers, with filming to begin in 2009. However, Fox was hesitant about making the film without Ridley Scott's direction. In July 2009 it was confirmed that Ridley Scott would be returning to direct the Alien prequel. In June 2010 Scott stated during a Q&A that the story will be developed and produced as two separate prequel films, and that the project was being prepped. In October 2010, it was reported the production had been put on indefinite hold. It was said Scott wanted a $250 million budget along with an R rating, but 20th Century Fox was reluctant to invest so much money in a film that is not PG-13. On November 10, 2010, a tweet by Henry South, a visual FX designer working on the Alien prequel, indicated the film had gone into production. It has been reported that Natalie Portman and Noomi Rapace are on the shortlist to star in the film, with Rapace as Scott's favorite, while the studio prefers Portman. The first of the two prequel films will be released in theaters either by the end of 2011 or in 2012.

The first drafts of the screenplays were written by newcomer screenwriter Jon Spaihts, and Damon Lindelof is rewriting at least the script of the first prequel. Ridley Scott stated that the story will take place in 2085, approximately three decades prior to the events of the first Alien film, before the birth of Ellen Ripley. The story, which originally went through several drafts, features a female lead character and will present a "technologically feasible" view on the early stages of "near faster-than light" travel. It will also focus on terraforming and Weyland Industries before its merger with the Yutani Corporation. The films will explore the nature and origin of the unknown extraterrestrial race, who only had a brief appearance in the first Alien as the derelict spaceship's pilot. Scott stated that the films would be about "gods and […] engineers of space" and hinted at the possibility that the Xenomorph Alien was designed either as a biological weapon or as a means to "clean up" planets. Scott also announced that the original Zeta II Reticuli planetary system will be part of the prequel story.

Roger Christian, art director on the first Alien, speculated that the films will be shot in 3-D, which was eventually confirmed by Ridley Scott. Since 3-D films need high lighting levels on set, the hallmark atmosphere of the Alien films with darkness and shadows will be added in post-production through grading processes, while the 3-D equipment will be based on post-Avatar technology. Production design has commenced, and Arthur Max is heading a small Pinewood Studios art department, whose task is to deconstruct the first Alien and reverse-design the prequels from the original art and visuals. The Alien itself will be reenvisioned as a progenitor of the received form of the Xenomorph, and Scott reported that he had planned to contact H. R. Giger for possible artistic collaboration.
