Has Marvel given up on Animated DTVs? We haven't heard any news on Marvel's animated DTVs since the Thor animated movie came out last spring, meanwhile DC has 3 more animated DTVs in the works.

you mean the Tales of Asguard one? That was actually really good too.

But on the other hand, Marvel is pumping out live action big blockbuster movies, and has several cartoons on the air or in development, while DC has The Dark Knight Rises and Man of Steel coming out in the next two years, and a handful of animated shows. So maybe their focuses are just on different media.

I haven't seen all of them but none of the ones I have seen have impressed me much.

That goes for DC, too. New Frontier was probably the best one. I haven't seen Batman Year One.

I have loved all of DC's. They always impress me.

But didn't the Thor one come out sometime last year? I can't remember. I'd say Marvel probably makes & releases when they feel they have a good one to produce. Or something like that. Marvel, I don't think, really released/releases much animated DTVs anyways.

Most of Marvel's haven't been that great, at least the ones I've seen (Ultimate Avengers 1&2, Hulk Vs Thor/Wolverine). I never saw Invincible Iron Man, Doctor Strange, or Next Avengers. (Planet Hulk was decent and I really liked Thor: Tales of Asgard, which came out May 2011 btw).

DC's animated DTVs have been consistently better (again, the ones I've seen anyway).

I still want a serious adaptation of The Judas Contract on DTV

DC has ****ing WARNER BROS. doing their animation.

Come on.

I'm sure Marvel just finds it's not going to be profitable to try and compete with that, so they're focusing on TV and film.

I highly doubt Marvel thinks about it that way. Besides, Marvel has Disney now to DC's WB.

And Marvel is now a part of Disney.

Also, is there really much "competition" in these things? Does it really matter what the other guy does?

Exactly what I was thinking. I doubt they really compete with each other on this.

No, but I do think various media have general limits as to the size of their potential audience and barriers to entry. WB has an established track record with high quality video releases and it seems to me to generally be a boutique market, not nearly so profitable as more traditional film or TV enterprises. I have no doubt we'll see Disney synergizing their animation department with Marvel, but I'd be surprised if new attempts at DTV movies preceded attempts at traditional series animation. They have a built in audience and they have the infrastructure already in place.

Marvel seem to be focusing their efforts on film and TV, which seems sensible, given their track record.

It's not about competition so much as it is about playing to your strengths and looking at market saturation. And Marvel seems to be focusing their attentions on the bigger projects that will find a wider audience.
