I just read issue 6 and was geeked to see John Paul Leon's art. And I loved the Red Thunder story.

But I have no idea what it was about.

It was a movie that Cliff was watching...but who is Red Thunder? Is it a movie that Buddy Baker was in? Am I forgetting something that was mentioned in the first 5 issues?

I haven't read issue 6 yet, but there was mention in the first issue (that interview that opened the series) where they talked about Buddy having starred in a low budget indie film. That's probably it.

Ok thanks. I need to give this another read-through.

Yes, the first pages of issue 1 mention that Buddy essentially starred in the superhero equivalent of THE WRESTLER.

I finally read all opening six issues and this is wonderful stuff. The art is really, really horrifically gruesome which terrifically expresses the real horror of the storyline. It's very well done.

I mean, it's without a doubt the best DC book out there, right? Nothing in the 52 comes even close.

The only thing I can think of is whichever Batman title has the Court of Owls. While I find the story to be rather bland and uncompelling, the Court of Owls is an absolutely beautifully designed new Batman villain. While I don't care for the story, I think the concept is great. But that's it. 52 titles and only one, ANIMAL MAN, is really any good where I don't have any caveats in complimenting it.

It's up there. But also Wonder Woman and Deadman.

Swamp Thing and Demon Knights also.

Swamp Thing is good. I could not get into Demon Knights. I tried because of Ystina but I guess I was hoping for it to build more off of Seven Soldiers.

After reading #11, this is a top 5 book for me now. Time to update my list.

Buddy' body had been taken over by the rot, so the totems give him a new, stronger body with new abilities. He can now transform into animals.

I liked Grant Morrison's Animal Man run but I always though he looked kind of stupid as a person flying or running like a cheetah or whatever. This is a little more cliche but it looks "right". I like the little things like stomping the old Buddy's head with an elephant foot, or flying and actually looking like a human/bird hybrid.

I kind of wish I hadn't seen spoilers about Cliff dying before I read it. Still, pretty powerful stuff.

But I liked this book a whole lot more before the huge war with the Red and the Green and the Rot and all of the crossing over over the last few issues.

Is #18 Jeff Lemire's last issue?

So, Rotworld pretty much sucked, but the quality of this title sprang right back to life with the last issue.

Socks as Maxine's grief counselor is the most adorable thing ever.

And no, E. Lemire's still on the title for the foreseeable future. He wrote this week's issue, and he's solicited at least through June.

Yeah, I'll stick with this as long as he's on it.

I was honestly worried about this series with the huge dip in quality of Rotworld, but the new ish was strong, and Swamp Thing seems better with the new writer than it was with Snyder.
