I guess you could say Jaws is canon to Piranha 3D but not the other way around (though with that logic you could say the Slasherverse is canon to Sharknado but not the other way around, and then you could go all out with any reference, so I don't like this logic much)

I'd say unless something's parody to the point where it overrides the consistency of the movie/show itself, you shouldn't disregard it

I think Piranha 3D is more of a tonal shift than an outright parody. I don't think he was playing a parody of his character when he outright said they're the same person.

I mean, references place the original two Piranha films in the same universe as Gremlins/The Howling/Explorers, so I don't know. I think Piranha 3D works fine with Jaws.
