That was great.
I really wish they had the rights to put the series on DVD. I would totally buy it.
The reasons it hasn't been released to DVD is a lot more complicated than just Fox/WB clashing about the rights. It turns out that since it's such an old show, the legal ramifications of making profits off celebrity guest stars and the royalties that they should get (but aren't legally defined anywhere) seems to be the issue at the moment.
The main draw of season sets would be the inevitable wealth of extras and commentaries. Luckily there's a lot of these already available in other formats. Everyone should check out the 1966 movie which did actually get a full-fledged DVD release and has great extras that cover the history of the show as well as the movie. There's also a DVD called
Holy Batmania "a two-DVD set that included documentaries on the making of the series, as well as rare footage such as the original screen tests of the cast and Lyle Waggoner." I haven't seen this, but I definitely want to.
And also, there's
Return to the Batcave: The Misadventures of Adam and Burt, which is an interesting little TV movie biopic/real-world mockumentary about the show.
