Really just an excuse to post this video:

We need to discuss this more.

And they said drugs are harmless.

The thing that makes this so much better than all of the other campy versions of Batman is all the jokes are done with such a furiously straight face that it transcends most other kinds of comedy. I've literally never seen anything like this show in that you watch it as a kid and it seems like a serious (albeit colourful) action/adventure show and then as you grow up, you discover it to be an all-out, balls-to-the-wall farce. It believes so strongly in what it's doing that it becomes cool. This is where Schumacher and (IMO) Brave and the Bold have failed.

That was great.

I really wish they had the rights to put the series on DVD. I would totally buy it.

The reasons it hasn't been released to DVD is a lot more complicated than just Fox/WB clashing about the rights. It turns out that since it's such an old show, the legal ramifications of making profits off celebrity guest stars and the royalties that they should get (but aren't legally defined anywhere) seems to be the issue at the moment.

The main draw of season sets would be the inevitable wealth of extras and commentaries. Luckily there's a lot of these already available in other formats. Everyone should check out the 1966 movie which did actually get a full-fledged DVD release and has great extras that cover the history of the show as well as the movie. There's also a DVD called Holy Batmania "a two-DVD set that included documentaries on the making of the series, as well as rare footage such as the original screen tests of the cast and Lyle Waggoner." I haven't seen this, but I definitely want to.

And also, there's Return to the Batcave: The Misadventures of Adam and Burt, which is an interesting little TV movie biopic/real-world mockumentary about the show.

Or maybe it's just more proof that KIDS ARE ****ING STUPID! ;)

Wow, the secret of the universe revealed.

I've met a lot of people my own age who still don't really get that the show was a spoof. It's weird that something like this was such a hit, when a show like Police Squad (which was far more of a blatant farce, even if it was still completely straight-faced) was cancelled after six episodes because people "didn't get the jokes".

Cesar Romero's Joker kind of reminds me of Tim Curry.

When I first saw this photo of Ledger

...to me, it looked like Cesar Romero's Joker after a year or two of heroin addiction. Which I thought was awesome.

Romero was a great Joker and had some of the best moments of the whole show (the surfing scene, for one thing). That being said, Frank Gorshin's Riddler was far and away the best villain of the whole show.

He's number 10 on James Rolfe's list of Baddest Bad Guys (keep in mind this isn't really the quintessential list of bad guys, I mean Nuclear Man from Superman IV: The Quest for Peace is on the list for crying out loud). James' comment about him is pretty funny:

I want this dog.

That's the most drastic change I've ever seen from page to live action for any comic book character. Ace the Bat-hound, you rule.
