Will Avengers Vs The Ultimates In 2014 Lead To The End Of The Ultimate Universe?

The rumor is that we're going to see an Avengers Vs The Ultimates series next year, the second 616/Ultimate crossover, pitting one Captain America against the other.


But the big kicker:

"And that the whole event may lead to the end of the Ultimate Universe, in print published form at least…"

I think they should stop writing Ultimate books besides USM. The others haven't been worth it for years. If they cancel USM, i'll be upset. It's the only Spider-Man book I'm reading right now.
 
I seriously doubt that they'll cancel USM.

The book is still a big seller of theirs, at least as far as I'm aware. Remember, Ultimatum was originally supposed to end the Ultimate Universe, and it pretty much did - except for Spidey, which was the only ongoing monthly until Death (the others being miniseries). As long as it's still selling at least that well, it's probably safe. Anybody have any sales figures?
 
Ehhh. I haven't followed the ultimate titles for years, and I've only heard good things about Spider-Man for a while. Maybe it's time to put this dog down
 
I wouldn't be opposed to it... I'm timeline-weary in relation to the Ultimate verse, and as said, the stories other than USM have been lackluster at best. There've been a few good ideas introduced that were then executed amateurishly and while led somewhere, it wasn't anywhere interesting.
 
Yes. Please kill it. So much of it has been so bad for so long.

I don't think they would cancel USM though. I wonder if they use the second Spider-Men to bring him into a different universe or something so they can kill off the rest of the UU.
 
Who would be terribly surprised to find out that all of this "Peter's a ghost living in Doc Ock's head living in Peter Parker's body" leads to Miles Morales taking over the 616 Spidey book, possibly with Pete in a mentorship role?
 
Just let Bendis write USM and and cancel the rest. The other characters can pop up from time to time, or maybe if they want to keep the larger universe feel, let Bendis write Ultimate Marvel Team-Up again too.

That's basically what they did with the MC2 Universe. they cancelled all titles except Spider-Girl.

As much as I like seeing a different take on the Marvel Characters the Ultimate U has become a bit... run-down. I think it's time to put it down. But I do kind of like Captain Canuck and Zombipanda ideas.

Well, the other series in MC2 were never really any good. Heck, Spider-Girl wasn't that great, it was just satisfying to see Peter & MJ married and happy and that the torch had been passed on.

As much as I like seeing a different take on the Marvel Characters the Ultimate U has become a bit... run-down. I think it's time to put it down. But I do kind of like Captain Canuck and Zombipanda ideas.

The ultimate u was conceived as a continuity-free jumping on point for a new generation of readers. It's just not that any more. It's been running for 13 years and has its own convoluted continuity. The 616 universe has changed to try and be more "up to date" and the movies have taken the place of the attraction for new fans. All that added to the fact that most of the ultimate books have been mediocre at best for 8 years or so... It's time to pull the plug.

But USM is worth keeping, because it's fresh and interesting and well written.

The strength of the UU books was not that they were continuity-free. I would even say that almost from the beginning that they were NOT continuity free, and they had a good number of continuity glitches that existed without us having even seen what they were (The Fantastic Four being mentioned in The Ultimates before they even existed is an example of this). Granted it wasn't as bad as the main MU but it was still there.

The strength of the UU books has been that they are much more character-driven and the stories have more of a modern feel than the MU books. Or at least that was the strength. They really don't have any strength any more, except for USM.

USM IS fresh and interesting, but that's because it is well-written and not because it is bogged down in continuity issues. Ultimates and Ultimate X-Men are NOT well-written. Both have had average to poor writers coming in and out, writing poor stories.

For some reason Marvel has been content to let small time and no-name writers tell profoundly mediocre stories tying in to mediocre events, and it used to be that wasn't the case. THAT'S why people generally don't care about it any more (compared to, say, when Ultimates 2 was going on). If they tightened things up and put big name writers telling good stories on it it could be what it used to be.
 
Be that as it may, a less confusing universe for new readers was the point at the beginning. It didn't last long, but that was Bill Jemas' original intention. I said they should cancel the line b/c that original purpose is defunct AND because the stories have been bad for a long time...with the exception of USM which is still good, regardless of the continuity.

Actually, the Fantastic Four were there. They were the same as their 616 counterparts (Appearing in the Ultimate Spider-Man Super Special). Marvel has always wanted the Ultimate U to be small and not have too many books. After they decided to reintroduce the FF in the Ultimate U and give them their own book. Bendis said, that it was because of the younger version of Ben punching that T-Rex (in the Ultimate U and the Zombie U crossover.) was the reason they were now younger.
