Does this make sense to anyone else? - 'Highlander Effect'

Two omnibuses (omnibi?) are coming out July 1, both of which I am tremendously interested in - Immortal Iron Fist and Ultimates. Brubaker/Fraction/Aja on IIF and Millar/Hitch on Ultimates represent not only two of my favourite modern runs on comics, but two of my favourite all time (and I've been collecting off and on for 30+ years).

About a year ago, if you'd asked me to choose, no question - Ultimates (I can only afford one). But now? No question - Iron Fist.

Why? The direction IIF has taken after this omnibus is consistent and entertaining. Its not quite up to the same standard, but extremely close. In fact, IIF under the new team is my favourite current Marvel book.

Ultimates have gone so far down the toilet, they're probably coming up a toilet in China.

Is it crazy to let what has come after taint what has come before? I call this the 'Highlander' effect. Highlander II was SO BAD it actually managed to wreck the awesomeness of Highlander for me.

Does anyone else experience the 'Highlander Effect'? (In comics, TV, movies, novels, or otherwise?)

• Superman + Superman II = great. III,IV and returns suck. I still like I+II the same
  
• Star wars : Episodes IV and V were great but VI was bad and I was horrid but I love star wars
  
• The mask I loved , Son of mask = ****. Mask still good
  
• Turtles III didn't make me hate I and II

It's like the people *****ing and moaning about movie Deadpool, guess what, it doesn't effect or even touch the comic book version.

I loved Ultimates 1, Ultimates 2 was good (even tho, Millar reused his New World Order story from Authority), and much as Mad's art is fun to look at, Ultimates 3 and Ultimatum are made of suck and lose.

Hell, a great example, Ultimate X-Men didn't make me love 616 X-Men any less.



Oh and... Iron Fist is made of sex and awesome.

Those are good examples, because I feel exactly the same way about Superman and Star Wars... I guess the 'Highlander' effect isn't universal

Iron Fist is waaaaaaay better than The Ultimates.

I'm not excited for Ultimate Avengers either, but it's got nothing to do with Loeb. The premise just doesn't appeal to me, and honestly, I'm not a huge Millar fan.

As far as the question posed by Fenway, I think the entire Ultimate Universe has been Highlander Effected for me. I used to read every series and mini from the UU. Now I've dropped it all and I never touch those old issues that I loved so well. But I think that has as much to do with my tastes evolving as it does with the bad taste the UU left me with when I quit.

I would take The Ultimates over Iron Fist just because it's a bit more consistent and it got me into comics. Both are fantastic series though and some of the best stuff Marvel has ever put out.
