The cover of Mad World Gary Jules did for this is absolutely brilliant.

Having recently re-evaluated, this is one of my Top-3 films of all time.

If finding the right pre-existing song to use for a movie scene is an art form, and it is, no movie I've seen has ever done it better than this(the director's cut). I refuse to listen to "Never Tear Us Apart", "Head Over Heels", "Notorious", etc on their own outside the context of this film again so they're still special and jarring every time I watch it.

The story has a life of its own.

I haven't watched this movie in a while; I have the Director's Cut and I really enjoyed it (interestingly, Kevin Smith, who saw the movie, originally wanted to be in it, later did the commentary for the movie with Director Richard Kelly, and eventually made an appearance in Kelly's second film, Southland Tales, recently directed Zack and Miri Make a Porno with Seth Rogen, who played a high school bully in Donnie Darko ....). The characters and plot really appealed to me .... Looking back on this movie, I think I can probably relate to the main character a lot more now: I'm an outsider, and somewhat in a state of existential despair. Patrick Swayze (sp?) was awesome in this from what I can remember ("I think you're the ****ing Antichrist!"), and .... Frank the Bunny!

For some reason I've heard a lot of discussion about this movie lately, even in the classroom, when I'm not even involved in the conversation, so I'm probably going to re-watch this thing sometime soon. A 2009 sequel is being made by a different director :x .... S. Darko takes place in the summer of 1995, seven years after the original film. It follows Donnie Darko's younger sister, Samantha (Daveigh Chase, who is reprising her role from the previous film), who, in the wake of his death, has found herself at age 17 with a broken family, mired in feelings of insignificance. She and her best friend Corey set off on a road trip to Hollywood when they are plagued by bizarre visions.

The director says he is "a great admirer of Richard Kelly's film and hope to create a similar world of blurred fantasy and reality." According to the sales company, Donnie will not be coming back, but there will be "meteorites and rabbits." Frank the Bunny is being played by a different actor, Justin Chatwin (the guy who plays Goku in the Dragonball Z movie). But he and Samantha Darko are apparently the only two returning characters .... Yeah, so that movie will suck.
