Empowered is a comic that came out this week (or the week before) from Dark Horse Comics. It's written and pencilled by Adam Warren (he did Dirty Pair, Livewires, Iron Man: Hypervelocity, and Gen13). It's not inked or coloured, but that doesn't matter. It's not a collection of comics in trade, it's a small manga-sized comic of over 200 pages and it has lots of incidental episodes of the main character, Empowered, and her supporting cast.

Empowered is a superheroine with a skintight costume that makes her superstrong, bullet-proof, and able to shoot energy blasts... if it's in one piece. If it tears slightly, she loses all her powers. And y'know - rose bushes tear her costume. As a result, she ends up getting bound and gagged whilst half-naked - a lot. This gives her self-esteem issues since she's regarded as the lamest superhero ever.

It is hysterically funny. It's sweet and endearing, and a complete joy to read. The chapter breaks (of which there are many) usually involve Empowered talking directly to us, including explaining how Adam Warren came up with her. It's one of my most favourite comics ever. I will not be surprised if this turns out to be the best comic I read this year.

I will point out though, it has a parental advisory. Not because of swearing (there's lots, but it's always blacked out), and not because of violence (there's lots, but it's rather cartoony and tame) - but because of consensual sex (the horror! People! Physically displaying! Love! That's not suitable for children! Murder, yes! But love!?!?) - the consensual sex acts in the comic are as graphic as the swearing or the violence (i.e. not at ALL) - but it is risque. I say this because some of our younger members may have parents who would not appreciate them buying this comic. If you do have parents like that, buy Empowered, and when they say, "Ooo! What's all this sex?!" show them the Punisher comics you buy and point out all the incredibly graphic swearing and violence it has, and point out the hypocracy as you are banned from your local comic shop forever. To sum up - there is sex in this comic, but this comic has all its swear words blacked out, so there's no graphic depictions of it. It isn't hentai.

It is however, a fantastic comedy and I can't recommend it enough. It also seems there will be at least one other volume.

Also, the characters in the comic are amazing. My favourite is Demonwulf. A slayer of worlds, an apocalyptic demon from Hell who is trapped in a belt and sits on Empowered's coffee table watching dvds and yelling at his human hosts, whilst dispensing advice as only a hell demon with a revulsion for humans can.

So yes, Empowered. I adore this comic. I hope someone else has given it a try. It's damn funny. :D

Any one else think it's funny that uk america ect.. are the countries with nudity and sex every where you look yet the middle east where the women don't even show an arm is the place with a population of 100 billion kids?

Edit : also you buy porn and get weird looks but you buy a rap cd about killing your family and lover and people think your normal?

off topic yes but still it's messed up

Yeah, but those kids are generally born in wedlock to adults. As opposed to all the wonderful teen pregancies we get over here.

Also, yes, SSJMole - murder and violence can be graphic, that's cool. Spider-Man can watch his girlfriend's neck get broken by a criminally insane murderer - but he can't have sex with her. How twisted is that?

Hey if there is one thing the bible taught us it's this : sometimes the unwanted babies of teenage mothers can turn out alright!

Yeah, that's so stupid. Damn conservatives and their irrational hatred for necrophelia!

EEEE!!! I Love Empowered, I love Adam Warren and wanna have his babies. He's got all these great ideas, but the Big Two won't give him the green light. I'd sell my soul for the Dirty Pair/Superman book he wanted to do.

That would so kick ***.

But I'm so glad someone else loves this little comic. Adam Warren's so funny. It's crazy the 'big two' don't let him go to town when you look at the pap they produce on a weekly basis. :noway:

He's definately my second-favourite comic guy. EEE! :D

Did you not want to hug Empowered when she's all purry, wrapped in a blanket of Thug Guy's compliments!

Er... that's a bit girly. Um... Listen up, witless jackanapes! The world-raper, Demonwolf and his exquistely delivered soliloquies are where it is "at" dawg!

Adam Warren on Empowered volume 3 said:
Not that vol. 3 has actually been approved yet; only strong sales (and, most importantly, reorders) on the first two volumes of EMPOWERED will guarantee that that vol. 3 will ever see print. So, feel free to sing out / tell your friends/ tell the world about EMPOWERED, if you wanna see more of it...

Vol 2 is out in September. Guys, honestly, everyone I know who's read this comic has enjoyed the hell out of it.

It is one of my very favourite comics. Please go out and get a copy. I really want a 3rd volume. :D

Okay Bass, you going to make me do it. Though it looks stupid to my untrained and quite frankly, horrible eye sight, I'm going to buy Empowered Volume 1.

With my birthday money

You *****

Don't do it, you'll only increase his power tenfold.

I read it

....

Now Bass and others will not like me as much

First off, the big con I found while reading it. I read it, and immediately thought to myself, 'This seems to be similar to Sorethumbs webcomic except with Superheroes instead of video game store owners'. I found this to be accurate. It did ring out, at the beginning I might add, to be alot like Sorethumbs. Let's draw the main character in little clothing, let's put her in embarassing situations, lather, rinse and repeat.

At least it didn't repeat. It started to evolve the character at this point. She gains a personality, more than the naive bimbo at least, gains a boyfriend, which leads itself to some funny moments involving their clashing jobs, and a friend or two. Her world starts to expand, and slowly evolves, while keeping try to it's comedy. This though, gets boring real quick. Then, it goes against it's comedy roots to throw ina subplot out of left field, which you don't expect. This curveball however seems extremely out of place, it just ended up glaring at me.

The art was pretty, though that is to be expected when the guy is drawing what he is good at. I would love to see an Empowered drawn by skotti.

The story was good though, considering the material that is within it. I read it in two hours, so it's not that deep or thought provoking. I guess with all the hype Bass gave it, I expected more, and when it didn't deliver, it kinda fell flat with me. Thanks for ruining it Bass.

I loved it. You are insane. I thought it was hysterical. The Cosmic Pimp, the 'secret identity', the "Choose your own path to disaster", and of course, Demonwolf.

I can't believe you didn't love it. :(

I found it comparable to a good webcomic, that's all.

I'm sorry I didn't fall in love it, I promise to at least check out volume two if that makes you feel better
