I've personally always seen them as separate universes where similar events happened. The anachronisms that arise from treating Superman Returns as a straight sequel to Superman 2 were always distracting to me (not to mention the other differences between it and the Reeves films).
Agree 100%. Earth-96 went through similar although not exact events as the Reeves films.Wow, do you all agree with me? So in Earth-96, similar events from Superman I-II played out and then he experienced similar events to Superman III-IV. The comic book tie-in supports this. I would also rather not use Crisis to explain the differences either because I don't want Superman Returns to be erased.
So we can we can just ignore Marc Guggenheim?

They are different multiverse there is no tie in superman 78 to returns

Any specific reasons why you don't think Superman Returns could fit in with the Nolan films? I consider the films made from 2005 - 2012 the Pre-DCEU and I don't see any reasons why they can't fit together. It's likely DC/WB intended their films to be connected at the time. Here's the order of the films in my timeline:
- Jonah Hex
- Batman Begins
- Superman Returns
- The Dark Knight
- Green Lantern: Extended Cut
- The Dark Knight Rises
Here are the continuity notes I have for the films:
Superman Returns:
- There is a small reference to Gotham City in a news segment reporting where Superman has been sighted: "But as this security footage from a simple deli robbery proves...there's really no feat too big or too small for the Man of Steel. Reports are flooding in from Metropolis, Houston, Gotham and as far..."
- Perry White says "Olsen! Where are the photos of that birthday-clown-massacre thing?". This is likely a reference to The Joker, who was confirmed to exist at this point in "Batman Begins". In that film, Jim Gordon tells Batman: "Now, take this guy. Armed robbery, double homicide. Got a taste for the theatrical, like you. Leaves a calling card."
- The pajamas Jason White is wearing have Aquaman on them, confirming his existence in this universe.
- The Arrowverse's Earth-96 is an earth where similar events to this film occurred, but there are differences. In one scene, Superman claims "Actually, this is the second time I've gone nuts and fought myself." which is likely a reference to "Superman III" (a different continuity from "Superman Returns"). Earth-96 seems to be an adaptation of "Kingdom Come" due to Superman taking the suit and the backstory of losing Lois Lane and also being an older Superman like Kal-L from Earth-2 in the original "Crisis On Infinite Earths" comic.
The Dark Knight:
- At the beginning of this film there is a movie poster for "Spider-Man 3". If "Spider-Man 3" exists in this universe, that means both "Spider-Man" and "Spider-Man 2" also exist. In the first "Spider-Man" movie, Aunt May tells Peter Parker he isn't Superman. With this line, it can be concluded that Superman exists in this universe, otherwise the audience wouldn't understand the reference.
- GTV (Galaxy TV) is part of The Metropolis news corporation named Galaxy Communications. It's CEO is Morgan Edge who resides in the city of Metropolis.
Green Lantern: Extended Cut
- In the DC crossover event "Crisis On Infinite Earths" footage was used from this film to confirm it takes place on the post-Crisis Earth-12 in the DC live action multiverse. It can be assumed all of the live action films on this timeline also take place on Earth-12 by extension.
- Abin Sur is the first alien to be discovered by humans according to Amanda Waller. "An alien life form, doctor. The first that mankind has ever encountered, despite what the conspiracy theorists would have you believe." This line shows that Amanda Waller doesn't believe Superman is an alien from the planet Krypton, despite The Daily Planet's newspaper articles that featured interviews with Superman himself claiming to be an alien in "Superman Returns". In that film, Superman and Lois Lane have the following conversation: "Let's start with the big question. Where'd you go? To Krypton. But you told me it was destroyed. Ages ago. It was. But when astronomers thought they found it. I had to see for myself." Lex Luthor knows that Superman is an alien by the following dialogue: "You see, unlike our clunky earthbound forms of construction, the technology on Krypton, Superman's home world, was based on manipulating the growth of crystals." Later, Lex Luthor tells Lois Lane: "I'll have advanced alien technology thousands of years beyond what anyone could throw at me." Richard White also seems to believe Superman is an alien by the following exchange he has with Lois Lane. "Kryptonite? Radioactive pieces of his home world." Hal Jordan later states "A few days ago, we thought we were the only ones in the universe." This line reveals that the general public likely doesn't believe that Superman is an alien from a distant planet. Since Kryptonians are nearly physically identical to humans, it would make sense that there would be plenty of skeptics regarding Superman's origins. This dialogue also confirms that there haven't been any large scale alien invasions on Earth-12 prior to this film's events, which is keeping with the mostly grounded tone established in the films prior to this one.
