Well, I was just looking at IGN's essential reading list, because I am selling comics this week (the Ultimate comics... sorry folks) and I would like to pick up a couple trades. My results were these, organized by imprints:

Vertigo:

The Losers (want to read)
WE3 (want to read)
Y: The Last Man (want to read)
Animal Man (want to read)
The Invisibles (want to read)
Bite Club (want to read)
Transmetropolitan (want to read)
Fables (want to read, have volume 1)
Sandman (want to read)
V for Vendetta (want to read)

Dark Horse:

300 (want to read)

Marvel:

Earth X (want to read)
Ultimates (have)
Ultimate Spidey (have full run, am selling)
Ultimate X-Men (have full run, am selling)
Marvels (have)
Ultimate Fantastic Four (have full run, am selling)
The Avengers: Under Siege (have, would like to sell)

DC:

The Golden Age (want to read)
Kingdom Come (have, love, am keeping)
JLA Tower of Babel (have, would like to sell)
Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (have)
Batman: Legacy (have, would like to sell)
Batman: Knightfall, Knightquest, Knightsend (have in issues; some of my first comics; will not sell)
Batman: The Long Halloween (have)
Batman: Dark Victory (have)

Wildstorm:

Planetary (have volume 1, want to read remainder)
Ex Machina (want to read)
Stormwatch (want to read)

Eclipse:

Miracleman (cough Bass cough) (WANT TO READ)

Image:

Walking Dead (Have volume 1, want to read remainder)

I thought it telling of the company's state and ability to retain a maturing reader's interest that there were no Marvel titles on my list.

Today I picked up the first volumes of Walking Dead and Fables. I loved them both.

Marvel, mine will not be made yours any longer. This is not by any sin of your own, but by deed of the other publishers.

Why the hell isn't the Ultimates on that list?

Hell, why isn't PREACHER OR WATCHMAN on that list?!

Dumb list.

These are things I do not yet have.

I have the first volume of planetary, ALL of the Ultimates (which I love), as well as Watchmen, which is my favorite along with the Ultimates.

I shall re edit it to fit in the stuff I have.

This list seems to be baised some.

Baised doesn't even seem to cover it, really. I'll assume IGN gets payoffs from whoever is willing to pay them, so I don't really take anything they write seriously.

And I'm not sure how this is biased, aside from its a person's opinion.... I never pledged to give each company equal due... these are just the things I have not read yet that I still want to read... keep in mind, I have read most of what marvel has to offer, so that has a bit to do with it... but as far as new material goes, marvel, i think, is lacking a bit.

Oh okay, I think we misunderstood this list, that's all.

In that case, it looks like your looking for more mature reading, in which case Fables is a good choice, as is Planetary.

Vertigo:

The Losers (want to read)

I'm also interested in this.

WE3 (want to read)

I loved it and need to buy it.

Y: The Last Man (want to read)

I have it downloaded but havn't got around to reading it.

Animal Man (want to read)

Depends how old it is. I'll probaly download and peak.

The Invisibles (want to read)

I really want to get this. It's high on the list.

Bite Club (want to read)

Never heard of this.

Transmetropolitan (want to read)

It sounded decent. I might.

Fables (want to read, have volume 1)

I tried a issue and couldn't get into. I'll probaly download a package and try again.

Sandman (want to read)

I loved the Death miniseries so I have to check this out.

V for Vendetta (want to read)

I don't even have to say. It's on order.

Dark Horse:

300 (want to read)

Maybe. I havn't heard to much about it.

Marvel:

Earth X (want to read)

This was amazing. I pick a good time to read now they are rerelasing the trades.

Ultimates (have)

Hell yeah.

Ultimate Spidey (have full run, am selling)

This is a lighthearted book I enjoy.

Ultimate X-Men (have full run, am selling)

The comic that brought me in.

Marvels (have)

I've peaked but never read.

Ultimate Fantastic Four (have full run, am selling)

This is another fun one.

The Avengers: Under Siege (have, would like to sell)

meh.

DC:

The Golden Age (want to read)

Not sure what that is...

Kingdom Come (have, love, am keeping)

Good man.

JLA Tower of Babel (have, would like to sell)

It wasn't as great as I thought but it was good. Batman's a prick.

Batman: The Dark Knight Returns (have)

The art turns me off

Batman: Legacy (have, would like to sell)

Never read.

Batman: Knightfall, Knightquest, Knightsend (have in issues; some of my first comics; will not sell)

I heard Knightfall was the only good part.

Batman: The Long Halloween (have)

I need to read this still.

Batman: Dark Victory (have)

I made the mistake of reading this first. It was good.

Wildstorm:

Planetary (have volume 1, want to read remainder)

Downloaded.

Ex Machina (want to read)

Downloaded.

Stormwatch (want to read)

Not sure what it is.

Eclipse:

Miracleman (cough Bass cough) (WANT TO READ)

I do too. I am really interested in this.

No interest at all.

Fables was interesting in the same vein as Batman: Dark Victory insofar as that they both concern murder mysterys and trying to put pieces together. (well, fables v.1)

300 is about 300 Spartan soldiers who stood up against thousands upon thousands of i think persian forces in a great battle. art by frank miller though.

Golden Age is the golden age superheroes of DC vs. Hitler (more or less from what I've heard)

Legacy is the sequel to contagion

The Knights-whatever hold sentimental value.

Stormwatch is what spawned Authority. Most, if not all of the Authority members came from stormwatch

and i had no interest in walking dead either, but my shop owner recommended it. at 10 bucks for the first trade, i said, why not. I was VERY pleasantly surprised; in fact, i was absorbed and enthralled, and I plan to pick up the next couple of volumes. The story focuses more on the human interactions and character development in this world gone to hell, and the sparse but appreciated zombie action is fun, funny, and intense.

Give it a try, everyone.

Because, you know, me harping on it for the last year has been useless. I think I've gotten 3 converts.

Sorry dude. I was in a superhero-y phase that I just now have gotten sick of.

But thanks for boosting it all these years, it really is a great read.

Tell me, what else would you (or have you been) reccommend(ing)??

I liked this as a first arc for Fables because it was an unforced way to introduce us to the main characters.
